Debt Dumpers - 2013

Have you looked at what it would cost to cancel the contract? Sometimes even when there is a fee to cancel the contract, if you look at what you would be saving with another company it comes out that you would still be saving money in the long run.

We've been comparison shopping satellite and cable for when our contract is up in October. They ALL have great rates for the first 12 months, then almost double for the second 12 months. And all of them have about the same programming for the same price in our area. It's a conspiracy I tell you! Lol.

I have to look into it. I want to say it's between $150-$250 if we cancel. Or we can try threatening to cancel and see if they lower our rate.

I think I need to change my cable provider every year! Seems like the only way around it...til you run out of cable providers. :)

Our cable promo just ended so I downgraded the tv portion of the bundle down two steps just to keep paying what we have been paying. We will actually be saving $7/month. The internet has to stay the same because I use it for work. We will be losing a lot of channels, but some of them, like ABC Family (I watch Switched at Birth), we can watch online for free the next day, and others like OWN, MTV, VH1 etc are not big losses to us. We also have Hulu+ and Netflix streaming so I hope the fact that we'll no longer have On Demand is not a big deal to my 12 year old. But I just couldn't justify keeping the package the same when he has an ipod touch and many different ways to watch shows.

I have Verizion Fios and love it! We did the promo with the 1 year contract and after that we just go on a month to month basis, so were not locked into anything.

Isn't Dish network a part of Verizon?

The old company we had if the wind blew the internet/cable would go out. The internet would go out for days and they wouldn't prorate or nothing!

I received my tax refund today so I was able to pay off 2 credit cards and half of my third. My new goal is to work a ton of OT and get the last cc paid off and start paying down the medical debt.

I'm considering lowering my 401k by 1% but I'm not sure it will help at all. I've survived a 10% pay cut living on my own as a single parent I'm sure I can survive this!!! It just feels like getting out of all this debt will take forever. I love this thread because its so motivating!!!

I paid off DD's tuition for the year! I emailed the principal in Dec because I thought we were getting close to being paid off since DD ended up dropping some classes after an illness and hospitalization caused her to miss quite a bit of school early in the year. They finally got back to me on Wednesday and said I only owed $105 for the remainder of the year, so I took in a check on Friday! We had been paying $230/month, so that is a huge relief!

I'm still on track right now paying $200/payday to the Sam's Club card. I'm hoping to pay it off by March 1.

Just found out last week that DD13 is going to disney for orchestra in Nov. I can go as a chaperone for half price if I can get my manager to approve the time off. It's over Thanksgiving, so I don't know if she'll approve it. If she doesn't, I'll have to decide if it's worth it to fly down for just a couple days. I'd hate to miss her performance, but it's only about 6 weeks before our cruise, so I may need to wait a couple months and see how our debt reduction is coming along before I make a decision.

Paid off CC #1! I also keep calling the hospital that we are on a payment plan with. At tax time last year, I was able to pay in full with and thy gave a 35% discount. They said they are hoping to be able to do that again this year too. I've used the amount we are getting back in taxes to write a good snowball/ debt payment on budget. By the end of August, we should be free of the CC and medical bills. Hopefully it works like I have it on paper! Great job everyone!

Way to go everyone!!! Congrats to everyone on reducing this debt!! I still have to sit down today to readjust my budget, but it looks like I will have everything paid off by March 31st instead of May31st :thumbsup2

I cannot wait!!!! Thanks to the OP for starting this thread! I think seeing what everyone else is doing, even if it's paying an extra $5 towards a bill helps everyone else stay on track!

Agreed gracie1 ! I love coming on here and seeing how everyone is doing and sharing my small successes at paying down a big bill or a paying off a very small debt! Plus this is truly keeping me accountable and on track! I posted on here that I need to pay $931 a month for the next 24 months to be completely debt free, except the mortgage, and that is exactly what i plan to do and post every little milestone along the way! Thanks everyone and great job so far!::yes::

I received my tax refund this morning and put some in my emergency fund, which is now up to $535, and applied $500+ to my credit card. Still a ways to go but it's a big help!

I just paid off a small medical bill of DS's, $68, but felt great to cross it off the list. Next up, my dentist bill that the insurance denied.

It does feel good just to get a bill paid off, regardless of how little the amount!!

Tax refund came in this morning...so we paid off the business loan ($1400!), another credit card ($1100!), put some in savings & planning on paying down another credit card! WOOHOO! :woohoo: Feels great to be marking off these debts!!!

So I had my taxes done and we should be getting $6200 back :thumbsup2 as I said before this is all going to our new roof so none to debt and a little in the emergency fund! Unfortunately I found out that ours can't be submitted until late February/ early March because we have energy star windows that were bought last year and for that particular credit they are not excepting returns yet!

That is crazy not to accept refunds for the window credit! Yay on getting back $6200!!! It really kind of is going towards your debt, because if you didn't have this refund you would still have to pay for the roof! It is just keeping you from going further in debt :thumbsup2
