I write checks to pay my bills, but I am starting to notice places like the electric company cashes the check without recording the check #.

When I balanced my check book I wonderedr why a check # is not there. They debited your account not using your check #.

It took me a while to see these amounts in the debit card postings and realizing it was actual checks I wrote.

I don't want to switch to automatic payment for the electrical company, cause mine flutuates each month, but I wish they would let you pay over the phone and use your debit card then.

I haven't tried this myself but I believe that online bill paying through your bank, CC company, etc. can be done on a monthly basis so you can specify the amount each time rather than have a set amount transferred each month.

does your electric company have a budget plan? they review your account/usage for the past year and then come up with a monthly charge... then make any adjustments at the end of the year, results in either a credit or an slightly higher bill.

i.e. I pay $77 a month for a year, then for the last bill, they review my usage and let me know if I need to pay an additional amount (usually a few dollars---not a ton difference).

This way, I don't have to worry about a $200 bill when the A/C is going during the summer
