Debit card "holds" at check-in?

I checked into AKL on the 25th. There was no hold put on my account whatsoever. I know this because they charged my account, at check-in, for the full stay - and I only had enough in this account to cover lodging (and this is the same card I am having the hotel link my room key to).

I was very surprised that I was charged the full amount at check-in. I had been expecting to be charged like evey other hotel, at check-out.
