Okay.....I haven't used my debit card in a while, used it once at a drive thru and we know the person working the register...etc so I am pretty sure it wasn't them. We also used it for an oil change....again, we go there all the time and know the gentleman that changes our oil. I couldn't figure out what/where/who had hacked it.....then it just dawned on me. I had to call in to Disney and use it over the phone to pay off one of our packages because it wouldn't pull up online. With all the recent talk of the resort CM that was reported for stealing card numbers...etc, it just makes me :confused3 wonder if it was indeed that use that got me.

I'm so thankful that I caught it early....and our bank was very easy to work with, but still....think I'll be using a lot of cash this year at Disney due to the stories of people getting their numbers stolen.....sad really.

Just kind of wanted to post to see if anyone else had anything strange happen with their cards lately after paying Disney?

I remember a couple years ago when we were standing in line for the special character signings with a Disney Visa, you had to show your Visa card to get into the signing. There was a CM walking up and down the line telling everyone to put away their card until they were up in the front of the line because they caught some people watching the line and stealing the numbers off of people's cards.

cards have chips in them, someone could scan them without you ever taking it out of your pocket.

No all cards have chips and most stores don't have the chip reader. I think it is important that you keep in mind that when this happen most likely is someone that stole the cc from the company directly doesn't mean it was an employee it could be someone hack into their system. I know that we have gotten several letters from companies letting us know that our cc numbers were compromised. Once we even got one from the bank and when I call they explain that it wasn't their fault but they had detected this problem in many accounts and the only thing in common with all the accounts were target. Sure enough when I call them they said something happen in their system. And by the way people that hack sell the info online.

I also had a bunch of fraudulent activity on my bank card right after paying off our Disney trip around March. I had paid off the balance and by the next night, I had received a call from the bank's security office letting me know of the problem. There were odd charges like 2 sets of $500 charges at Payless. My bank was great at straightening everything out and told me to let them know when I would be at WDW so they could keep an eye on my card/account although I only used cash while on vacation.

Mine were even stranger than that....charges from fake internet sites and all for small amounts. I'm talking 9.98, 12.00....etc. Really strange...and the websites were not even real, well except one had a fake front and it was selling IPods for 9.98....LMBO.

why I never use my debit card to pay for things online or over the phone. And I also watch my CC as each item gets charged so I know what is going on right away and can call to report it.

Same here. :)

I had this happen this week with my Mastercard. :headache:

You know what is funny...I think this is the first time I've used my debit card to pay for my Disney trip since maybe 2003 or so LOL when we didn't have credit cards. Even then I think we just mailed checks in LOL I always use Paypal to shop online, or use my credit cards and I watch them....not as closely as I watch my debit card though. I really hadn't used my debit card at all for the past month except at the fast food place and for that oil change....then I went to the bank and got cashiers checks to pay off our Disney balances (2 rooms). When I got home I just hated the thought of mailing the payments....so I took them back to the bank and deposited them and just made the payment online, that one wouldn't pull up so I had to call.

Oh well, strange really.....but we definitely will be using more cash and/or credit cards at Disney this year.....I'm not pulling out my debit card especially since many of the restaurants take it away from the table to charge you...just not going to put myself in this position again if I don't have to.

I had my credit card numbers stolen and used to buy Legos this month. The only place I used the card was making my reservation at Disney and ordering flowers. Chase caught the charges but said they tried to charge three orders for Legos. I was not happy but what can you do? At least they caught it right away

It's entirely possible in the OP's case that the fast food company's or the oil change company's records were hacked, and that using her debit card to pay anything Disney had nothing to do with anything.

The fact that several other people in this thread (or on this forum) also had problems with someone making phony charges to their credit or debit cards after the posters having used the card to pay Disney for something? Stop and think - what do we all have in common? Walt Disney World.

Not every person on the DIS has problems with credit/debit card hacking, but everyone on this board who does has [likely and] coincidentally used the card to pay for something related to Disney. Ditto for the Disney Visa card holders who have problems - they all have the same card, so it looks like they're targetted or it's some 'inside job', but really it's just coincidence, a common denominator.

NOT minimizing the problem AT ALL, but please don't be blaming Disney or its employees SIMPLY because we all have that factor in common.

McGruff the Crime Dog tells how identity thieves get your card number using their cell phone cameras. It's a snap!

When you use a CC (credit card) instead of your debit card, you don't have to be vigilant every day to report the bogus transaction within three days but rather when the bill arrives you can go through all the transactions and report the bogus ones then. (Most credit cards let you phone in to find out the transactions too.)

Strange...have you used it recently for paypal? This is the only thing I used my MC for lately and I get hacked around the same time. Even the fraud specialist mentioned this to me. :confused3

That's why I will never use a debit card and love my credit card. Also, when ever I have my credit card out, I always make sure my fingers are over part of the numbers, front and back.

Whoever had your card number was testing it to see if it was still active. They try to slip through a couple small charges, then if those go through they hit it with bigger charges. The websites they used were probably selected because they do not require a match on the billing address, and/or the "verification number" from the back of the card.

These days you can't really determine where someone got your number - it could be that they collected it 6 months or a year ago, and they've been sitting on it until now.

I always just put that "call to activate" sticker over my numbers when I've activated the card. The numbers are covered, all except the last 4 because those are asked for at Lowes...etc. No stores need the numbers, unless it's an older store that uses the imprint method...and in those situations it's easy to peel the sticker off and then put it back on. When using it anywhere, the sticker doesn't keep you from sliding it, doesn't keep an employee from sliding it...etc but it does cover those numbers.

Hi, I just wanted to pop in and let you know that whomever got your card number could have gotten it many months ago and sold it to someone who is just now using it.

I work for a financial institution, and we see this every once in a while. Once, about two years ago, the tellers had to call nearly every customer and let them know that we had to cancel their debit card and reorder new ones because their information had been compromised because a *giant* corporation's system had been hacked. We found out about the hacking several months after it initially happened, because the thieves waited to use the information. It is believed that they gathered the information and sold it to another individual/group.

In cases like this, you really don't know who could have taken the information. The most important part is to cancel the card and get a new one immediately.

You don't have to report debit card transactions within 3 days either. You have 33 days from the date of your statement, just like credit cards. According to Reg E, debit cards have the same protection as credit cards in this situation.

That being said, the sooner you catch it, the better particularly when using your debit card.

The imprint method is actually illegal. It's a federal law. The only exception is NY cab drivers. Interesting, but true. Also, it's illegal for more than the last 5 digits to print on a receipt.
