Debbies Watermelon Trip Report Prelude
The Who: Debbie (me), 21, full time college student, part time nanny/child care giver. 13th trip to WDW, 8th solo.
The When: March 9-16, 2002
The Where: The Walt Disney World Dolphin.
The How: Spirit Airlines, 7AM flight to MCO arriving 9:15AM. From there, to be picked up by TTC and headed safely to the Dolphin. Spirit Airlines on the return, flight leaving at 10:15AM on March 16.
The Why: To get away from real life. Why else?
With graduation looming and the fear of the real world growing strong, this trip will serve as a stress reliever above all else. In addition, this was a postponed trip from early October. I was scheduled to be in WDW during the first weekend of October last year to celebrate my 21st birthday, but after the attacks in September, my family didnt feel comfortable with me going, so I rescheduled. Airfare and hotel transferred over without a problem, so I was all set!
The What: As mentioned above, this trip is acting as a stress reliever more than anything else, so I plan on traveling and having a good time. I have traveled solo to WDW many times previously, so I have found a lot of things that I like to do solo. I plan on concentrating on those things and let WDW work its magic. Having a good time is my top priority.
At this point, I should explain my title. During my last trip to WDW, I discovered the group Off Kilter. For those of you that arent familiar with them, they are a Celtic rock band that performs in Epcots Canadian pavilion. They employ regular rock instruments (guitars, drums, keyboards), and combine it with bagpipes. Sound out of the ordinary? Add to the mix the fact that they all wear black shirts, blue and red kilts, white socks and Doc Martins, and they truly are Off Kilter. They are an incredible band, and if you have the chance to see them, please do! Anyhow, when I first encountered them, I was walking from the International Gateway to Future World, and walked past while they were playing. They were playing a song called Mary Mac, and they were trying to get the audience to sing along. However, the song is sung so fast that its hard to understand, so the lead guitar player/vocalist came up with a rendition that the audience could sing. It goes: Watermelon, watermelon, watermelon It became an ongoing joke during the rest of my trip, and I videotaped them performing that song later in the trip. I showed it to my family, and now anything funny or unusual happens, we shout Watermelon! So, this trip has become the Watermelon trip, and I will most likely be using that phrase throughout my trip report.
What do I have planned for this trip? A lot of time in Epcot! As mentioned before, I plan on spending time viewing my favorites in WDW. Since Epcot s my favorite park, I plan on spending a lot time there. I am a huge fan of Off Kilter (as mentioned earlier), so I will be viewing a lot of their shows. Likewise, I am a huge fan of ToN/ToD, so I will be viewing that nightly. If anyone is reading this and will be in WDW this week, youll find me on the benches in front of the German pavilion each night! I missed Splash Mountain during my last trip as it was closed for rehab, so I definitely plan on being there. Thats about it!
This will be my first trip with a laptop, so I will be posting trip reports daily from the Dolphin.
Okay, enough rambling, let the trip begin!
