Okay for those of you who have completed the 1/2 marathon I have 2 ?'s

I currently can jog/run approx 3.5 miles in 1hour without being winded or feeling like I am going to die - How fast on average do you need to be to NOT be swept?

And

I do most(99%) of my running on my treadmill and I have not timed my real world(outside) run/jog yet - So the ? is for those of you who have trained on a treadmill and outside - which do you find harder?

Thanks in advance :teeth:

You need to do 16 minute miles to avaiod being swept. You should train to be a little faster than that to account for crowds and such. Sounds like you're close! (I think you should! ;) )

I use both a treadmill and outdoors. I think the treadmill is easier for me overall -- less impact, easier to keep a steady pace etc. BUT, I go faster outside. On the TM, it takes maybe 14 - 15 min. to go a mile and that's on the flattest setting. Outside, I can do 12 min. miles, hills included. I'm not sure why this is (other than the TM may be wayyy off) but DH thinks it's to do with shortening my stride on the TM. Whatever, I just make the mental adjustment that my indooor times aren't right and plan my training around my outdoor times (and I try to spend more time outside, only using the TM for cruddy weather emergencies).

Train for 4mph which is 15 minute miles...if you are 3.5 now--you have PLENTY of time to get that extra half mile per hour if not more :) You can do it!!

Thanks for all the info and encouragement - I am going to sign up and train hard and do this. Right now I am using Hal Higdons training for the 5K - its 8weeks and then I plan to do a couple of them this spring - Then it will be on to the 10K training - which is also a 8wk training and I figure mid summer I will run one of these. Then onto the 1/2 marathon training which is 12weeks for novice so I should begin that on or around the begining of Sept. just incase I need to repeat a certain week to master it.

Well I'll be visiting the training thread alot - see you all over there!
