DEBATE:What makes the CB great OR what does it lack?

I've found the CB interesting because it covers such a broad spectrum of interests - there's something for everyone - and of course everyone's common bond of Disney. It's a place where we can come and fume, ask questions about something we know nothing about, get opinions and support if needed. It covers a broad spectrum of interests outside of Disney.
What I don't like, from a newbie's perspective, it can be difficult sometimes to get comfortable in a thread and not feel like you're 'butting in' to a conversation sometimes. All in all, I enjoy the DIS, and the comraderie of fellow Disney fans!

I really don't mind the cliques on the boards. What I mind is the hijacking of innocent threads by the same people just posting to hijack and not contributing to the thread topic. Heck, Beauty and I used to drink peach tea on here together and post up a storm late at night. (.
I love peach tea LOL..Should that be my official Dis drink?

What I don't like: The "in crowd" and especially double standards related to them. The threads that degenerate into gibberish. Political/Religious/Parenting debates with no possible positive outcome.
I think, for the most part I always learn somethng new on the religious/politcal debates...That's what I lke about them.Occasionally they get ugly but generally, I've learned a lot

Only if you want to be up all night posting a lot of silliness! :rotfl: All that caffeine kept me awake for hours and hours! Now I only drink flavored water after noon!

Yes it was, wasn't it?

I'm not saying it's all bad now, heck this is THE best Disney information board around. But when those colorful characters left, they seemed to have taken a large chuck of the "community" with them.

Hey, alot of us remaining are still pretty colorful.... :wave2:

I think the CB is what it is. I feel oneness with a bunch of WDW fanatics, even if we disagree about everything else! ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo pluto:

I'm already awake for half the night anyway

I've never had peach tea :guilty:

I like the serious discussions. I like the characters. I like how I can come here thinking how mentally unsound my family is (and in-laws are) and someone will always post something to make me go "phew they're not so bad after all".

I don't like how some people have taken over the board and hijack threads with their inside jokes and clogging the board with their private messages. It's exclusionary and alienates people. There's always some group doing it and the group always changes. I don't like how this really isn't a community anymore - it's like a city with little neighborhoods in it.
I miss the debate board :( that was an actual community. You could want to throttle someone that is on the other end of the political spectrum, but yet know that person would also be cool to sit back and pop open a beer with and chat about things you actually have in common

I ended up on the DIS because of a link on another disney discussion board to the food porn thread. I watched to all the pictures on that thread, and I found out there were many great threads and boards on the DIS.

I started posting on the DLP one, started reading on the restaurants board, started reading trip reports, and when Mel Happyhaunt got chased away from there, I ended up taking a look on the CB. At first, everything went too fast, it was one big clutter. Then I discovered the DIScreet mode, it made it all way more readable (although you can't jump to the last read post) and since i used to be bored at work, I read a lot here, and contributed. In the beginning, it was fun, but now... Now I realise that
1. I get ignored
2. People don't understand me, because I choose the wrong words, because English isn't my language
3. I will never get the links to some other sites, needed to understand some fun threads

Right now, I'm less bored at work, way more work, less time to DIS, and I think I will just stick to the DLP-forum, there they understand that I sometimes choose the wrong words, adn they give me the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I will read a little bit on trip reports or restaurant reviews.

It's great many people form little communities in the big community. Too bad that you don't really "get a chance" if you don't belong to such a group of people.
Oh well, it's maybe time for a real life now for me :)

Yes, I've noticed a difference in the threads. The more philosophical type have been replaced by more and more "community" threads and political threads. I don't think they need to go anywhere, but I do wish some of the old type would come back, and that you could post them without someone jumping all over the wording of the post and folks would respond to the actual subject matter.

The problems, I think, are a little too much of people using any excuse to jump all over others.......................sometimes just over word choice, grammar, or even to attack the fact that the subject was brought up. Conversely, we seem to have an ownership problem too, wherein some thread posters don't want to hear any dissenting opinions and shut down the thread or attack those who dare to challenge what they've said. I'm not speaking of the "clique" threads.........just general threads.

I do like that there are so many people here from everywhere.............I've learned more about the world and people in it since coming here. I also love that people will give advice if asked and usually very nicely. I can ask what some might consider a stupid question, and get it answered thoroughly, usually with different points of view.

I've noticed you..I always notice people with foreign tags because I'm really glad we have the diversity here..I'm still a relative newbe(18 months) andd I feel that I fit in just fine..There are certain groups that I don't mesh with and that's OK..I still built a place hear
And I think you're English is excellent

I agree. You always knew where people stood on a subject. I might not agree but it was usually informative and very entertaining. Unfortunately, moderating that board was not a job for the faint hearted. Pixie Dust and {{HUGS}} were replaced with Pixie Poop and a swift kick in the pants.

Sandra,
I've noticed your posts and have enjoyed many of them. I like reading your posts about your experiences living in Europe especially. and you're English is excellent (a lot better than a lot of native speakers actually).

I've been here on the DIS awhile but it took me a couple of years to discover and start reading and posting on the CB.

It certainly has change, and IMHO not for the better. I prefer seeing actual posts with questions, polls, news stories, debating topics, informative threads, venting, or sharing something that happened to someone as a warning etc... rather then all the game, clique, exchange threads that dominate the first page.

Just like when the prayers/pixie dust over powered the first page they made a sticky for it which was a great improvement.

Just like when they moved the War/Katrina threads that overpowered the first page to their own sub-folders, it was a great improvement.

Would LOVE a sub-board for the game, clique, exchange threads that dominate the first page and are thousands of pages long; it would be a great improvement! :thumbsup2

First off - Marcie, good to see you! :) Thanks for starting this thread - it's a great idea.

I've been around since 1998. The good thing about the CB is the ability to strike up a conversation with people from all over, at any given time. That is, if you think about it, just too cool for words. :thumbsup2

The not-so-good - and this is just me talking - the holier-than-thou attitudes of some posters. But in a mixed community, you're gonna get that. I just don't have alot of patience for perfect people. ;)

Plus side - lots of posters.
Plus side - a diverse user base.

Down side - moderation can be heavy handed.
Down side - I'm on it :rolleyes1

Many of them had no choice in the matter.
They had no choice if they got banned. They might be back again and we just don't know it. Did all of them get banned or just a small number and then their friends left in protest? If so, then they were to much into their small group and not the entire DIS, thus not a real community.
