DEBATE:What makes the CB great OR what does it lack?

that's it! she had that fat cat with a funky collar. he was cool. :thumbsup2

Oh yes, Simba I do remember, that was many years ago, wasn't it? I wonder how ol' Simba is these days.

Lanshark, so as to not hijack this thread, I think what helps make up a great community board is the feeling of being at home, where you can spill your guts or give a hug to someone in need. A good moderating team also helps make a great community board.

When it's lacking is when veiled personal attacks are allowed to remain, code names or code words used to belittle a person (aka inside jokes) and so on. That's when a community begins to fall apart. People feel alienated, hurt, rejected, etc. Just my opinion ofcourse.

I love that I can always find a reason to smile when I visit here (even if I also find a reason to shake my head too).

Also that if I express my love for a extra large Mouse, i will not be made fun of ;)

At first I thought you posted Bong!

That would certainly change the dynamic of the CB, now wouldn't it? :rotfl:

Let's have a civil debate about what makes the CB great or about what it lacks.

IMO, several years ago the CB had some colorful characters and there were usually several thought provoking threads. It was interesting.

What do you think? I'd love to hear from everyone but would especially love the opinion of those who have been around awhile.

That's what I miss. I used to love to read the threads and posts of some of the DISers who aren't on here anymore. They always had something thoughtful and interesting to say. Not to mention, they seemed like really nice people.

I especially miss snoopy's posts. She was always so nice and seemed like an incredibly intelligent woman. Oh and I miss septbride2002(Amanda) and EsmeraldaX even thought I never spoke with them, I liked reading what they had to say. :) There are so many other posters who added so much to this board that I miss.

Exactly! :thumbsup2

On my other forum that I frequent, I really can't express my love of Disney much. For some reason, people seem to think that Trance and the Mouse don't fit. :confused3
I seem to do it just fine. :confused3

The CB is nothing like it used to be, but I don't think it lacks characters.

It would but then I'd be forced to start chanting JUST SAY NO.

Of course with some threads...I may just have to do that anyway with or without the...um....bong.

I enjoy threads with some substance. That doesn't necessarily mean debates. I'm not a great debater, but I like to discuss subjects. I admit that I don't normally play the game threads or join the chat threads. The few times I tried, I felt invisible. It was sort of like going to a party where everyone but you knows everyone. Not a good feeling.

I will say that I think the folks on the CB are very nice. I'm sure we all have our moments, but people's intentions are good. If we could all just remember when we post to treat each other the way we would if we were speaking face to face, things would go much smoother.

I think the best thing about the DIS boards is that you can find all kinds of Disney stuff here. Answers to questions, to trivia, to photos of Disney and all that. Everyone seems to have that love for Disney going on (except PapaDuece). So, even if we have nothing else in common, we all love the World!

I really don't mind the cliques on the boards. What I mind is the hijacking of innocent threads by the same people just posting to hijack and not contributing to the thread topic. Heck, Beauty and I used to drink peach tea on here together and post up a storm late at night. (we were REALLY drinking peach tea--no cyber drinks LOL) Inside jokes are fun and harmless as long as they aren't making fun of other posters. I try to keep this board separate from my other board. Bringing too much from there here just seems rude.

Yeah, I still miss the ol' days (from way back as far as 6yrs ago). I know some posters gave mods a rough time but looking at those today, I think we'd be shocked at how innocent they all were. The DIS was a lot smaller back then and it was easier to get to know posters. The DIS is so big nowthat it seems harder to get to know people in the same way we used to know them. I guess that is part of progress.

where you can spill your guts

You can still do that - you just have to make up a fake name ;)

I don't think there's a solution, honestly. All the old-timers will always miss the way things used to be and the other old-timer posters (I saw M.Hopkins on here today and got so excited!) and all the new people don't see anything wrong with how it is. Eventually most of the old-timers will leave and in a year or two, all the newcomers will suddenly be faced with a change in the tone, and then they won't be happy and will complain about the way things used to be. I think that's why there's so many off-shoots of the DIS - people got tired of the CB dynamic changes and took their group somewhere else. (I can count at least ten DIS off-shoots off the top of my head.)

What I like: Interesting discussions. Fun avatars, tag, & signatures. A pleasant way to pass the time while I'm waiting for work to come in during the day.

What I don't like: The "in crowd" and especially double standards related to them. The threads that degenerate into gibberish. Political/Religious/Parenting debates with no possible positive outcome.

There's at least 10 more I'd like to see happen. :teeth:

me too. Monty the dog was just precious.

I left the DIS CB for 8 months after some outrageous things. It really is a shadow of what is used to be. IMHO of course.

Sorry I couldn't get back on until this morning... :badpc:

Thanks so much for all of your thoughts.

Blondie kind of hit the nail on the head for me.

In the past, you could browse the CB once every couple of days or once a week and find interesting topics as well as current events. I found out about 9/11 when I browsed the CB that morning.

Now it seems as if there is so much drama, innuendo and references to past events, posters or other boards that I have no idea what's going on.

You :stir: Marcie. LOL :duck: No, not really. Good question. I agree with many here. I think I will leave my own answer out though. ;)

Good to see you. Hey, we need another Atlanta meet. :cool1:

Hey Dan!

I am really not trying to stir the pot. The feeling of the CB has changed. I'm not saying it's any better or worse than it was 6 years ago but it is definitely different. I'd love to hear your thoughts on why. You've been around here longer than I.

No, no, Marcie, I fully agree. I was j/k. :teeth: It is a great question, it is so very apparent to many. And again, as for my thoughts on the subject, best left quiet. :ssst:

Yes it was, wasn't it?

I'm not saying it's all bad now, heck this is THE best Disney information board around. But when those colorful characters left, they seemed to have taken a large chuck of the "community" with them.
So why did the colorful charactes leave?

IMO it just got too populated. People who used to post on other parts if the site are all now crowded in one place, and based on your point of view, it IS or is NOT working.

I like it because no matter what time I visit it there is always someone there. It has changed alot since I joined the Dis but then life is forever evolving. I post on the threads that take my interest and try and not allow the nastier points to bother me. In that way, it's very much like life.
