As the OP, you can probably figure out that I am one of those who would like to be able to avoid the debate threads all together, instead of wasting my effort (and getting frustrated in meantime) weeding through the threads, by-passing posters starting and/or fanning the flames.
I wasn't aware there was a DB at one time, so I can't comment on how well it worked as far as keeping those threads seperate from the rest. I do believe, however, that with adequate monitoring and locking (if need be), most threads could be kept in check.
For posters who routinely turn threads into wars, I feel they should be more respectful of the readers who do not wish to participate in any way with such debates. I highly doubt the poster(s) they are aiming to bash, nor the readers of the threads, find enjoyment out of name-calling or bashing of others ideas/opinions.
There is a difference between a debate and just being plain rude. The point of a debate is to validate and strengthen YOUR opinion on a given matter, all the while keeping in the mind that everyone else is entitled to validate and strengthen THEIR opinion, as well. When debates turn ugly, nothing is accomplished...except maybe that people's feelings get hurt. And I personally don't enjoy getting my feelings hurt, or seeing other people's feelings hurt.
Whether or not a Debate Forum would work (or why is hasn't worked in the past) boils down to one issue...RESPECT. Unfortunately there are far too many people in this world that display little or no concern for others.
