Debate Forum?

After reading the boards for several years now, I have found that there are quite a few topics that are grounds for debate. Many people feel very strongly about their point of view, and often times innocent threads turn into battle grounds, with people flaming one another for their opinions.

My suggestion is that a Debates forum be created, where everything from "too old for a stroller?" to "does she/he really need that wheelchair?" to "parenting methods" and everything in between can be discussed, and kept segregated from the other forums.

I am only speaking for myself when I say that I am just a wee bit tired of having to read response after response of posters argueing back and fourth with one another. I am not saying you shouldn't voice your opinion...by all means do.

I just feel it should have a seperate area so those of us who enjoy reading/participating in such debates can do so, and those of us who do not enjoy such threads can avoid them.


Any opinions? I respect everyone's point of view, and would like to hear how others feel about this issue.

Not a bad idea at all, but I think it's the nature of some people to attack, and others to defend, and although there may be a forum where this is allowed, even encouraged, it probably wouldn't stop those with the tendency to do it wherever they post.

There used to be a debate forum on this board. I think it was closed about a year ago (at least).

I really wish there were a debate forum. It seems that lately almost everytime I open a thread that is merely meant to voice a personal issue or maybe ask other parents questions there seems to be this one person who wants to start a debate almost every time. I've seen this person do the same on other's threads and end up in debates and it sometimes gets out of hand. However, if there were a specific debate forum and you new you were posting a thread you would be open, willing and ready for it.

I agree. The forums have pretty much become watered down debate boards. Even if there was a debate board there would still be people having those very strong "opinions" on these threads too. So, it might deter some of the hostile threads, but not many.

I have noticed that there are a few people ( that stand out to me anyhow and I am sure with others) who live off of arguing and stirring the pot so to speak, I think a debate forum would make these people worse than they are. They would feed the trolls so to speak

As far as the debating on regular forums, I have just learned to relize that some people dont have a life and have nothing better to do than terrorize people so I try to stear clear of those threads after it starts.

The mods would always move "debatable" threads from the community and other boards and into the debate board. I never got too involved over there but it was some good reading.

I remember when the Debate Board was closed we were assured that the "debates" would not flow over onto the other boards as they would be strictly monitored and the moderators jobs would be easier..

Now - approximately a year or so later - you find thread after thread that turns into a major debate - with insults and sarcasm being hurled back and forth for pages and pages and pages before it's finally closed.. Even the most innocent of questions has been turned into free for alls.. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that many people who were regulars for a number of years either post very rarely now or not at all.. Some have chosen only to "read" and others have just left the site entirely..

Although the return of the Debate Board might be seen as a good thing by some, it's highly unlikely it will ever come back, so you'll just have to weed through the threads until you find the ones that have a very low likelihood of turning into a debate..

As someone who used to post on the Debate Board I can tell you that while things did get heated over there, the community board was hardly a refuge from threads turning nasty.
Reinstating the debate board wouldn't exactly quelch the nasty posts over here.

Believe me this was no Utopia even when there was a debate board.

Most of the threads that get heated here would have never been started on the debate board. Also, many of the folks fanning the flames never posted on the old debate board.

The only thing that "helped" was CB threads that got heated got moved to the DB rather than locked. That always bothered me, one reason I wasn't sad to see the DB board go.

There is a Debate Board on another site that I visit. It's not as busy/fast moving as the DIS Debate board was but it's pretty decent. You don't see personal attacks there like there were on the Debate Board here.

I loved and miss the debate board. Yes, there were personal attacks and flaming, but there were also lots of really interesting, well thought out and articulate discussions on a variety of issues. I found it very intellectually stimulating to participate there. I do wish they would bring it back.

I agree.. It was very intellectually stimulating and I sometimes even found myself changing my views on certain issues when more information was provided in the form of links to back up statements..
