I've heard this forever - where did it come from - anyone know? I know its usually true....

just curious

I wondered too how this "rule of 3" came about. I'm gonna look on Snopes and see if they have any kind of origin.

Ahh - thanks - I forgot to check out snopes.

And no - today's death would be the start of a new week, thus #1....

It's not just deaths but trouble that is said to come in threes. I have often heard the phrase "the third child of trouble".

Before we heard MJ died, we were just talking about who the 3rd would be... we speculated Patrick Swayze :(

sooo sad, all of it

If the rules of three are true where does Bea Arhur and Natasha Richardson come in,

So many people die everyday. I think it's so easy to turn a sequence of deaths into your "3". I find the whole thing silly, it's just an old superstition that people can't seem to let go of.

I think if you expect there to be 2 more deaths this week then if someone you know (or know of) does die then that will jump out as number 2 or 3. It never occured to me to count deaths in my life, but I am pretty sure they never came in 3's. It was an individual each time, didn't feel the need to wait around anticipating that third death.

For some reason when I first read your post I read OJ Simpson instead of Patrick Swayze.
