Any idea how long before a death certificate is issued?

TIA.

My husband's grandmother passed away the 2nd week of January and we just received the death certificate this past Saturday.

I got my grandmothers DC before she was buried. My mom's was 3 days after she died and then my dad's was about 2 wks.. Living in a small town has its perks sometimes.

Ask the funeral home. They are the ones who send over the paperwork & file it with the county (or whichever agency.)

I got copies of my Mom's a week after her death and it was from the funeral home. they had asked us how many copies we wanted.

Yes our funeral home did this too. It was more like letters to send out to places to say there was a death of this person.

Thank you everyone. I was at the funeral home with my sister-in-law and they did ask her how many.

I am trying to reach out to my sil for any help I can give her/ride to SS Office, etc. I did not want to mention the DC too fast. I know she will need it for SS, bank, Life Insurance.

Thank you again.

Depends on what the autopsy showed, if they did one. Often they have to wait for lab and tissue results to come back which can sometimes take up to 2 months.

Not knowing who the person was or if their were any prevailing medical issues or if age was an issue. So, it could be a few days to a couple of months and then some.

No autopsy here. My bil (my husband's brother), 47, passed away from stage 4 melanoma last week.

So sorry. Melanoma is a NASTY cancer with a poor cure rate (once it is stage 3 or 4). As an oncology nurse I have seen it far too many times.

She's going to need it asap, so, just like I had to do with my MIL, someone's going to need to mention it.

We used a mausoleum, and they did order them for us, but in retrospect I wish that we had just gone to the registrar's office. I just like doing these things in a hands-on way.

I think we ordered 3 (AARP said something like 9 or more is what you needed!)...one or two had to be sent out then they were sent back, and we used the other for the places that accepted it being faxed to them.

I had everything so in hand, and the certificate was back so fast, that MIL didn't miss a single pension or SS payment, and all the accounts that needed to be closed, or have cards reissued in her name (Chevron, I think, was OK with just switching the name from his to hers), were done inside the month as well.

Thank you. We knew it was coming......... but you still can't believe it when it finally happens. It's just so hard to deal with and we are all numb right now. A very, very sad situation.

On top of that, my mom is having treatments for breast cancer and my very dear friend/next door neighbor, just finished treatment for colon cancer a few months ago and now it's in the liver. :(

My sil asked for 6. I have never dealt with this (funeral, cemetery, etc.). I was not sure if she would just get them in the mail or will the funeral home call her when they have them... My husband was left with his parents who are up there in age and my fil is very frail so I accompanied her to make arrangements (more for support).

I will bring it up in a day or two with my sil.

The funeral home received my late DH's death certificate within a few days..

Of course there could always be a delay if the cause of death was unknown - or suspicious..

I'm sorry for the loss..

I will say make sure it is NOT a photo copy for Social Security. Please bring a certified orginal into a field office where they can certify it, make a certfied copy for the Soc. Sec. records and all that.

I would call to make an appointment with the local field office or call the 1-800 number to make an appointment.

Not sure everything your SIL will be applying for, but have her make sure she has other paperwork in order, like their marriage certificate, her birth certificate and those of any children they had.

I'm sorry for your loss. Cancer sucks. :grouphug:

I got my mom's within a week from the funeral home. There was no autopsy, her doctor signed it.

I don't think you can legally photocopy it. Social Security was informed by the funeral home, I didn't need to do anything. She died on Friday, I called them on Tuesday and they already had it in their records.
