Death at OKW

As others have stated having high blood pressure, being pregnant, heart conditions, young children, taking certain medications can be very dangerous when combined with a long stay in a hot tub. The warnings are there for a reason.

It is always amazing to me the number of parents who allow small children in them unsupervised. Even to the point of diving under the water in them. A small child could very quickly pass out and drown.

This is a very sad situation, but one according to friends that work at Disney happens very often as to someone dying while there.

How long Is it safe to sit on the edge and dangle your feet in the hot tub? I find this soothing to the feet after a long day of walking.

I also posted this on another thread, I apologize if you've already seen it.

It's not only the temperature that can kill.

WARNING: This story is quite graphic and can be upsetting to some - please use caution and discretion when reading this page.

This warning was issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on August 9, 1982.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today issued an alert to warn consumers of the risk of disembowelment to children associated with broken grates or missing drain grates on in-ground wading pools.

The Commission is aware of at least five tragic incidents involving children who sat on drain holes and were trapped. The children's intestines were then sucked from their bodies.

A 4-year old Pennsylvania boy suffered permanent injury when he lost 75-80% of his small intestine and his appendix while sitting on a drain hole at a private community wading pool. The grate (cover) to the drain hole had been broken and removed from the pool the day before the accident. In a similar incident in Birmingham, Alabama a 4-year old girl was trapped over a drain hole, and was released from the drain suction only after the wading pool's pump was turned off. Examination revealed that the child's intestines had been sucked from her body.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating these and similar incidents and will take such actions as are needed to prevent further injuries. The Commission is also alerting state and local governments regarding this hazard. The Commission has discussed the potential hazard with the National Spa and Pool Institute (NSPI) and that organization supports CPSC's efforts to alert the public.

Each of the wading pools involved in accidents investigated has a pump that draws the water from the base of the wading pool through the drain hole to the filtering system and then returns the water to the pool. Children are attracted to the hole itself and the sucking action of the drain. The Commission urges parents to closely supervise children using wading pools and not allow them to play with drain holes or covers.

Keep the DK's out of the hot tub... please.

I have seen articles about that - it's very scary. I do wish people would keep their kids out of the hot tubs though not only for the safety reasons as stated on the signage but also because people go in there to relax. One time we were sitting in the hot tub and some little kids were in there jumping around and playing like they were in a bathtub - one kid even spit a mouthful of water into my face! I wish their parents would think about other people that are trying to use the facilities - we all don't think your kids are "adorable".

That's what I meant when I said we all don't think they are "adorable" - the parents just thought it was cute! They were actually in the pool most of the time and the 2 boys were unsupervised in the hot tub - I'm the type that would say something to them myself but I didn't want to spoil their "magic" (it was spoiling mine though now that I think of it). I really think we should complain to CM's when things happen so that it can get straightened out for everyone.

While I agree that hot tubs must be used with care, let's not be too quick to blame the victim in this case. It's possible the man's heart was about to go no matter what, and the tub might have nothing to do with it. Since we don't really know the circumstances, the person or the medical history, it's not really fair to assume that the man who passed away did something wrong or that this was at some level his fault.

I was kind of wondering this too. How old was the guy? And did you know that there's a gene that determines if a person is susceptible to an early heart attack? My FIL did of heart attack at 51 yo, so DH is (not so slightly) concerned-he's 53. His attitude is, "if that's what's going to happen to me, there are far worse places! At least he probably[hopefully] was happy"

my sympathies for the family.

this can happen - I really though at the DVC resort the temperature for the outside hot tubs can be 120 degrees - I though that was on the sign??? - so the 104 degrees it seems reasonable.

the warnings are there for a reason.

however rocketriter you are right too - it may be completely unrelated to his being in the hot tub...

I haven't seem this at a DVC resort - but the Marriott these people meet getting in the tub - you know the thing that is only to set for 15 minutes - while we were swimming they got out twice and reset it....some people don't understand that rules are for their benefit as much as the resorts.

15 minutes is the limit - although I can't even stay that long....especially in the hot summer.....

My golly - this and other posts have now warned me of the health hazards of the sauna's! Gonna try and keep my kids out of them!

Regardless, during my last trip I went in to the Spa at BCV and (though I was not drunk) misstepped and tumbled in. THis one 2 year old was in the tub and I was a bit concerned cause me and my kids were the only one in the thing with him.

I just could not believe that a parent would allow a 2 year old to hang out in a tub like that unsupervised - so - me and my kids kind of watched after him till mom came and got him 10 minutes later.

Oh well.

Very sorry to hear about this tragedy, but, as one poster pointed out --- if I gotta go --- this was not a bad place to have it happen.
