Dear Mr. Obama...

Well that was one soldier, I hate when they are called troops, it is his opinion that the war was not a mistake, many disagree. I don't think we are in Iraq to protect our freedom, Iraq was not threating our freedom.

I am sure the military will vote in higher percentages for McCain, he was in the military and that is enough reason for some. I believe the military has a different mindset than civilians, it's not better or worse, just different. There's the right way, the wrong way, and the military way. JMHO

DO NOT put words into the mouths of all the troops.

I'm a troop - at least a retired one, and I've been to Iraq. I think that Iraq was a big mistake, and I support McCain.

Does that mean anything? :confused3

Personally, I think if Obama wins in November it will be because of the economy not the war.

I never said his opinion didn't mean anything, just that it was his opinion and not everyone agrees with it.

Everyone's opinion matters, in the end we all vote based on our opinions.

Please say you are kidding….

You came to that conclusion from this?

The report tracked donations of $200 or more. It found that 859 members of the military donated a total of $335,536 to Obama. McCain received $280,513 from 558 military donors.

WOW! :confused3
.

That is stretching it to say the least.
All the Military persons I know are voting McCain, including some Military democrats.

As opposed to one person's opinion on youtube? :rotfl:

And yet I know quite a few service men and women - active and former, that are voting for Obama. Guess there was a distribution problem with the memo.

Huh. Not the same way for me at all.

My gut feeling is that more military will be voting for the democratic candidate than they have in the past. Not knowing anything about the military (I'm admitting this, so please no flames) - I'd guess that career military probably vote majority Republican, but the National Guard probably splits its votes with the Democrats edging out. Again - this is a guess. I could be wrong!

A lot of the troops in Iraq now are from the National Guard, and probably in their wildest dreams never thought they'd be seeing combat when the signed up. Isn't this one of the first times we've seen National Guard troops in a major war?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_National_Guard

In 2005, National Guard members and reservists were said to comprise a larger percentage of frontline fighting forces than in any war in U.S. history (about 43 percent in Iraq and 55 percent in Afghanistan).[16] There were then 183,366 National Guard members and reservists on active duty nationwide who leave behind about 300,000 dependents, according to U.S. Defense Department statistics.

I think it also depends what part of the country they are from. Those troops from Blue states probably vote more democratic than republican - and the reverse is probably true as well.

What happens to them in this war probably affects it also. We had a distant cousin and a town resident killed in this war. Those families affected are against the war and actively voting and campaigning for Barack Obama.

Unless you count WWI, WWII, Korea, and VN - yes it is. Oh yeah, some were activated for Desert Storm too.

This is the first time major units have been activated since WWII though.

Thanks for the correction.

But the quote I read -

In 2005, National Guard members and reservists were said to comprise a larger percentage of frontline fighting forces than in any war in U.S. history (about 43 percent in Iraq and 55 percent in Afghanistan).[16]

Would that be accurate? And if so, does it lead to the conclusion that those who volunteered in the National Guard never thought they'd be sent overseas to fight a war?

Or was it a very heavy probability that they knew about?
