Well, not everyone values longevity in a relationship as much as middle America does. His life, his business, though I would skip the getting married part if I were him.
I think marriage is a crock, myself. Someone will surely come here to tell me how sad that is, but I know tons of "still married" people in their 50's living boring, gray lives (or fooling around on the side, or living as roommates--separate trips, separate friends) because they think the financial security and relationship longevity are worth staying together past the point where it's all merely habit. Not that there aren't tons of loving married couples as well. I just think they'd be that way without the piece of paper, and the ones who have just "stuck it out" would maybe not feel the pressure to stay together when they probably shouldn't.
