I know it's a long shot, but has anyone heard of any deals on the iPads? I'd like to get one for my husband for his birthday - but am struggling to justify the $500+ cost.

Thanks!

While there has been speculation that the price will fall, so far Apple seems to be selling all they can manufacture at the current price. They have pushed back the release of iPads to countires other than US to May 10 due to exceeding sales forecasts/supply problems. The yet to be released 3G version won't ship until May 7 if not already ordered. My local Apple store has no iPads in stock.

As a result, I would not expect a drop in prices for several months or more.

No deals yet. Apple is known for dropping the price on their products 3-6 months out.....and then the new one will come out next year and you'll see a bunch of the first generation iPads pop up on Ebay.

DH and both got one. I got the base $499 model and just added the case (which is a must I think).....DH upgraded his to the 64 GB version.

I have to tell you, it is a very cool little device.

To the PP- did you get a screen protector as well? i just ordered one and was thinking i needed a screen protector to reduce some of the glare.

to the op-i don't think there are going to be any deals until the next version comes out (like with most of the apple products). but i think you can get a little something if you go through Upromise or something similar.

No, we didn't get the screen protector. I haven't had any problem with glare...but also don't anticipate using it outdoors. I'm finding that its fine for me by adjusting the screen brightness all the way down for reading books in bed.....and up for movie/video viewing and surfing

My DH had to go to CA for the week on business. And so he loaded up his iPad with movies, games, software development books for work in PDF format, a few regular books, some video....and he called me to tell me how amazing he thinks the iPad is.

If you can wait for the 3G ones to come out you might see some used WiFi ones on Ebay. Just a thought.

Do you think the base model will have enough to hold games, music, etc? I'm so glad it's getting such good reviews -- that's probably why my husband wants one!

Also, do the apps that work on the iPod touch work on the iPad? We have a few games we'd like to use on the iPad as well...

Thanks!

A 2 hour movie takes up about 1.5-2.0 GB. I'm not sure about games, I'd have to ask my husband. For me, 16 GB is fine. I don't travel at all for business and only take really long plane trips if we're going to Europe. So, for those trips I wanted enough room for about 4 movies plus my books, podcasts and a couple of games. So for me, the 16 GB is more than enough.

My husband tends to load up his iPhone with much more stuff....apps, games and all of that, and so we figured it was best for him to get the 64 GB.

Neither of us were interested in the 3G version. For one thing, in a pinch, if we need to know something and want to look it up on the internet, we have our phones. If we want to get on-line with the iPad, most hotels have WiFi, and if they don't you can usually find a hotspot near by. Plus, the 3G network coverage is spotty at best. In my area (NJ), I never have my phone in the 3G mode, but keep it in the slower Edge mode.....otherwise I drop calls. And so for us, it wasn't worth the extra $$

I will say though that the iPad is very fast on our WiFi network....things load immediately. The screen resolution is awesome. I actually never thought I'd watch movies on it, but when I saw a few trailers on it....it was great. And I prefer reading books on the iPad to my kindle (which I sold on Ebay)....with the screen brightness all the way down, it doesn't bother my eyes at all. With the kindle, I didn't like that I needed a book light to read in the dark, that really created a glare on that screen that was bothersome to my eyes. And the page turning feature on both iBooks and the kindle app are very cool.

Like I said, it's a cool little device...at home, I'm finding that I use it as my e-reader and for surfing and light e-mail. The keyboard is easier to use than I thought it would be.

DH and I have iphones so we didn't think the 3g version was necessary. Plus the extra cost for the device itself ($120) and the $14 or $30 per month charge for the data was too much for me to justify right now.

Thanks for all the info! I ordered ours over the weekend and now i wait until it arrives! I will prob get some sort of screen protector as i hate finger prints on the glass screen. whenever i walk into the apple store i spend too much time wiping the prints off. I do the same thing with my iphone. the protector will make it a little better.
