Phil had a stroke while off loading and is in the hospital. :sad1:

Go to the DC site to see more info..

Oh no. I hope he'll be okay. :guilty:

They would be about halfway through oppelio (sp?) season, right?

"Capt. Phil is in the hospital, medivacked from St. Paul

Captain Phil Harris suffered a stroke yesterday at St. Paul Island in Alaska. He was medivacked to Anchorage and is currently at a hospital receiving treatment.

I didn’t say anything earlier, so family can learn from us instead of through the internet. I know anybody who is reading this also cares about Phil, so we thought you should know as well.

Phil is at a good hospital and receiving the best care possible. My mother, Cornelia Marie Devlin and Jake Harris are with him at the hospital. Josh is staying on the boat to help the new relief skipper who is flying out there today. The boat is in the harbor now, but needs to be able to leave in case the ice shifts and moves in.

Our engineer Steve found Capt. Phil on the floor of his stateroom Friday. He was immediately taken to the clinic in St. Paul – the same place he was treated when he had a blood clot two years ago.

As soon as we receive more information about Phil, we will pass it on to you."

Also, deckhand Jake Anderson's (Northwestern) father has been missing:

Featured News Report from Anacortesnow.com
JANUARY 23, 2010
The truck owned by 62-year old retired high school counselor Keith Anderson, who has missing since January 6, was discovered overnight in a remote area of Skagit County, according to a statement Saturday morning by Anacortes Police Chief Bonnie Bowers.

Oh my gosh, that's horrible. Poor Jake...wasn't it his sister that died last year? :guilty:

Posted on January 31, 2010 - from the Cornelia Maria website:

"Capt. Phil recovering from surgery

Last night Capt. Phil underwent surgery. Both of his sons, Josh and Jake were at his side. Josh flew in from St. Paul to join his brother. It may be some time before we know anything substantial about Phil’s condition.

Thank you to everyone who has sent good wishes and prayers for Phil, his family and the Cornelia Marie crew.

An old family friend of the F/V Cornelia Marie, Derek Ray flew to St. Paul to take on the role of relief skipper for the rest of the Opilio season."

What kind of surgery can they do for a stroke? I'm afraid to google. My dad died of a massive stroke and I'm afraid of finding out too much info.

As a nurse this doesn't sound good. There are several types of strokes, some caused by clots (which he has had in the past, but in his lungs), some caused by bleeding (if he was still on the blood thinner, Coumadin or Warfarin, he could have had bleeding in the brain). If it was a clot, they could have tried to go in to remove it, if it was bleeding (which would be worse) they could have gone in to try to remove the bleeding to relieve pressure in the brain.

As soon as I knew he had a clot, I would think the Drs would not want him back on a ship for these exact reasons.

I hoep all goes well for him.

And so sad for Jake...that poor boy....wasn't he realted to someone on his ship? Someone was his uncle?

Jakes sister died last year while they were out at sea.. :( Doesn't sound good for the dad.. his truck was found but he wasn't.. :sad1:

wow.. I think its time to Phil to take it easy.

I hope Phil is okay, but he really needs to stop smoking at this point. The last time he was in the hospital, he was standing outside in a hospital gown puffing away. I've watch Deadiest Catch for years now and it seems like the majority of those guys have cigarettes in their mouths constantly.

I hope Phil recovers. I thought he was not to go back on the boat after the clot last time. I guess it is hard to stay home.

Found this update on TMZ today:

"Phil Harris -- the captain of the F/V Cornelia Marie on "Deadliest Catch" -- underwent a 12-hour emergency surgery last night ... and was put in a medically induced coma.

Harris suffered a stroke on Friday and was rushed to the hospital. According to a source close to the family, doctors put Harris in a coma to reduce brain swelling after the surgery.

We're told his sons Jake and Josh -- who are both deckhands on the F/V Cornelia Marie -- plan to speak with doctors today. The F/V Cornelia Marie is currently back out at sea -- minus Harris and his two sons.

Harris was off-loading his boat when the stroke hit and he was immediately airlifted to an Anchorage hospital -- where a Discovery rep says Harris "is resting comfortably and is in the care of excellent doctors and nurses."

If there is anything lucky about this I would think it's that he was off-loading at the time and not out in the middle of the ocean.

And so sad for Jake...that poor boy....wasn't he realted to someone on his ship? Someone was his uncle?

Jake is related (not sure how) to Nick Mavar Jr., of the Northwestern. At one time, Nick also had a brother on one of the other crab boats.

From TMZ:

"Captain Phil Harris from "Deadliest Catch" woke up from a medically induced coma Tuesday, according to his sons -- and immediately started barking commands from his Anchorage hospital bed.

Jake and Josh Harris tell TMZ their dad "showed some good signs of improvement" today, including squeezing their hands.

Harris' sons -- who both work with him aboard the F/V Cornelia Marie -- say they are "encouraged but still very cautious" as Captain Phil recovers from the stroke he suffered on Friday."

Glad to hear. He is going to need to change his lifestyle. Now only if they could find Jakes dad.
