It looks like my DD 9 has Grave's Disease. Her pediatrician has made her an appt. to see a pediatric endocrinologist on Thurs. at Childrens Hosp. in Pittsburgh.

Pediatrician said she will more than likely need surgery. :scared:

 Prayers lifted up....

The body attacks its own thyroid, throwing everything out of whack.

Best wishes, Trish, she will certainly be in my prayers. Please let us know how all goes ahead.

I had this when I was in my early 20's. I have no idea what the protocol for a child is, but make sure you ask about radioactive iodine as a treatment. I had one dose of this with some reaction and symptoms similar to chemo, but didn't last as long. It took about 6 months for the full effect to occur but it completely cured me without surgery or effect on my endochrin/reproductive system. Because your DD is so young, it may not be an option, but it never hurts to ask.

Hugs to you and DD feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Children's is one of the best hospitals in the world. You're in good hands. Best wishes. :goodvibes

Trish,
I am praying for your DD and you. I agree, Children's in one of the best hospitals in the U.S.! :)

Off subject: have you ever been to the Jimmy Stewart Museum? We hope to get my Boy Scout son down there this year to earn his Jimmy Stewart Good Citizenship award.

I'm hoping for the best for her.

  and prayers to your dd.

I too had Graves disease, but like the other poster, mine was treated with radioactive iodine. My endocronologist told me that surgery to treat Graves was almost a thing of the past. Perhaps her pediatrician isn't fully aware of the treatment options now. I had absolutely no side affects from doing the radioactive iodine, but they have to make an educated guess as to how much you need, and most people end up taking synthroid to control their thyroid for the rest of their life. I hate the name "Graves Disease"-it sounds so scary, but is very easily treatable. Good luck and try not to worry.

Adding my prayers, and a generous sprinkling of PD.
