Last night around 10pm the phone rings and it's DD15 calling from camp to say the her glasses fell off when they were out canoeing and she, of course, couldn't get them. She was a very sad camper because her vision, especially at night, would be very poor without corrective lenses. She was trying to be a good samaritan because someone in her canoe had dropped a paddle and she went in for it and although she had a strap on the glasses, it floated up and over her head. Then she took off her PFD to try to dive for them. That was the part that scared me to death because they were on the lake at dusk and she would have gone under and...

As far as the glasses go, we luckily have a wonderful optomitrist and they looked up her last frame and picked out something similar and wrote out the prescription and all we had to do was make the final frame choice and take them to the place that grinds the lenses. They were done in just a couple of hours.

We've been checking sporting goods stores but no one has anything to offer in a goggle that would fit over the prescription glasses so that when she goes to camp again in two weeks, we hopfully do not have to repeat this!!::yes::

Sorry to hear about the glasses. I'm so afraid my DD7 is going to lose her glasses. She's not completely dependent on them and she takes them off a lot.

If you have a west marine or similar boating store near you, check out their selection; they have some straps that fasten on very tightly to the glasses, and will keep them floating. Also, they haev something that clips onto a hat, then your shirt to keep your hat attched if the wind blows it off, that may help keep the glasses around longer.

My stepdad lost his glasses in the lake when he fell out of a sailboat (don't ask how he did it; no one but him knows....). I think he now has some sort of floatie thing for his glasses, kind of like the water wings that little kids wear to go swimming.

Thanks so much for the name, gallaj0. Looked them up on the internet and there isn't any located nearby. Gave the closest one a call anyway. He provided me with the name Croakies which will allow glasses to float. Can't order through them, but hopefully will find them somewhere, now that I have a name to go with!

Have a great day all!

DS just got eyeglasses this week for the first time. The optometrist and place where I bought the glasses both strongly suggested goggles for sports as the glasses these days don't seem to hold up too well. Prescription goggles? I wasn't under the impression they went over the glasses. I was under the impression they are instead of.

just go to their website... looks like you can order online.... www.croakies.com

I was going to suggest contact lenses, but this is much simpler!
