DD's former boyfriend had a gun when he sought her out!

LisaSt...you are assuming he acquired his gun legally. Not likely. I don't know where the OP lives but in Jersey..it's not "easy" to get a weapon. You can't even buy a BB gun here!

Kimba

Sorry.. I know this is a little off topic but I think the gun laws we have are enough.

Try getting one in Canada you have to go for testing first to even get a gun liscence both physical and mental testing to be sure you are capable of owning one. You then have to take testing both written(classroom) and practical(shooting) and if you do not pass you do not get one no liscence no gun. Those are stringent laws and with the number of gun shops and so on in the US I would like to see them implement something like that before ownership is granted. I was at a gun show in the US and talked to a vendor if I could supply him with a valid US address he didn't care where it was or where I was from he would sell me a colt 1911A1 .45 cal semi auto handgun. Now how good are the gun laws if your shops are willing to do this. In Canada every weapon a shop has is registered even after the purchase the shop has to keep record of the person who purchased it. As the purchaser you must register your weapon and there is a fee to register it also you can only get handgun permits if you pass more testing and to go out with the weapon you must go to the police and give them a detailed account of the times you will be out from the time you leave your house with it to the time you return home and the route you will be travelling. If you are pulled over and youare not on the specified rout you get arrested if I remember correctly. Now those are gun laws. Sorry not trying to hijack the thread it just seems way to easy to get a gun in the US legal or not and if this kid bought one why did he get it and how did he get it legal or otherwise. Also canada has over 7 million registered guns and owners many owners have more than 1 gun but as it was put in MM's movie bowling for colimbine our death rate via guns is miniscule to the US to me that shows a problem with gun controll. We are also required to have our weapon locked in a gun locker and the ammo locked in a different area not stored together.

Lisa,
I can assure you that ALL gun shops/dealers are required by law to perform a background check on anyone who wishes to purchase a firearm.

DH just bought a shotgun in West Virginia over the weekend and had to file out a detailed form and then wait for clearance before he could buy the gun.

I'm not going to post all the details on a public internet board but believe me when I say that all is being done that can be done by Law Enforcement (very appropriate response!), the school (great response also!) and our personal methods to keep her safe.

I expect an escalation on his part when the we finish with this "phase" but we will be prepared.

I appreciate all of your positive and supportive commments! Giving her (or any teen) a gun in these cases can only bring diasater. LE spends hours, days, weeks, months, and even years in preparing their skills to defend us. I will trust them to do what they have pledged to do and leave it to them. We will also follow their directions in preventing situations that are dangerous.

Even if it was not a real gun, he exhitibed real intimidation. (good point, though!) Yes, that is enough to move some mountains. This was the first time that he figuratively stepped over the legal line and we are running with it at warp-speed.

Our biggest fear right now is that this will turn into road rage of his planning. Even if I'm the one driving with her and the other children ......in my van with On-Star, a cell phone, and I'm able to keep my wits about me.......we are still at risk.

I guess that the silver lining in all of this is that DD is getting stronger as she grows up and it rejecting him for his bad behaviors, does not want to get sucked into it all again, and that is why he is being so aggressive. It is a control issue and she is learning how to fight back appropriately.

I'll post updates as they are appropriate. It really helps to enter into these discussions in a public forum because it makes us think of things in a different way or view it thru a different lens. It has helped us to make an appropriate response and not a vigilante response. While some posts have taken a tangent, that is OK, too. Things have been said that have brought about a good discussion and brought issues to light.

Still, giving our DD a gun is not gonna happen!!!!!!!

(Love the camera idea, though!)

Glad to hear that Claudia I hope they get this menace off the streets before he really does hurt somone. Pam I am glad to hear that but apparently some shops are not doing this as was evident by the shop trying to sell me the Colt. Mind you this was in Michigan and the shop was from Chicago not sure how much difference that maes but it is still not a safe practice.
