Its still a rumor but its suppose to start the first of the year from what they are saying.. Yes I agree with the water, unless they were so swamped they forgot the water. I am not condoning that, I think he had every right not to tip on the second part. Would I, I probably would not because I am a server and I tend to always give them the benefit of the doubt even though I probably should not have. 45 minutes after taking my card, I probably would of been hunting them down after 15 minutes I am very impatient..

If you're fond of diner-style food, WH is in a league of its own. Zero nutritional value, "colorful" patrons, and the best hash browns in the universe ... scattered, smothered, and covered! With that open kitchen, there's always a show going on.

Eh, I think the thread is turing way more fun... we goto waffle house most every sunday for breakfast, it is close, it is fast, and I have just enough time to be pissed at something I am reading in the paper before my bacon shows up.

To one of the other comments that I "must be a joy to wait on"... I tend to be a lot of fun, I like service that has spark and energy. A vast majority of the time I don't ask for much other then extra butter for my waffle, and if something is wrong I have them change it when they bring the bill... IE I get my hash browns scattered covered smother chunked and diced (if you need translation on this check the waffle house web site). This past sunday my hash browns were just scattered and covered. And I know the server put in the order correctly, as I listen as they shout it out... she got it right, the cook got it wrong, not her fault, her tip not affected and I had her change it on the bill. Oh well, no harm no foul.

Everyone wants to make it out like I am seeking bad service, or out to get the wait staff, I am not. Like I said before, it just chapped me in the wrong place that for such horrible service (and please let's not have another round of people stating that I am blowing waiting for a water out of proportion, as that was the least of it, the waiting for water was the begining of poor service) I was stuck with her getting 18%. I have vented about it, a lot... I know how to handle it this sept. I know more about how the system works, union contract, Earth's rotational vector, and the height of CMs that play Mickey Mouse) If and it is a big IF I get poor service... I'll take the time and get a manager... I'll explain the situation, but guess what, they will still get the 18% (union rules), they won't comp the meal during free DDP and I'll be right back on here shouting I told ya so.

We were on our way home from Hilton Head. We were starving and decided to finally stop at one of the numerous Waffle Houses we had seen on the way down. The restaurant was huge, but had very few tables. We sat ourselves as the sign at the door said (and to the dismay of another large family that claimed that had been standing 20 minutes waiting to be seated )

Anyway, we all ordered scrambled eggs and hashbrowns. I had never eaten so much grease in my life. It was like they beat the eggs and added a little grease for good measure. Cooked the eggs, then covered them in grease before bringing the plates. It was probably the worse meal I ever had. It was also hilarious, because we just couldn't imagine how they managed to make the food so oily, the potatoes, and the toast included.

On our way to Daytona one year, we stopped at a waffle house in Georgia. We stepped in waited a few minutes while the patrons stared at us. The place was nasty nasty gross and dirty. We turned around and walked out and that is the only experience I have had at waffle house. We don't have waffle house's in my city only IHOP and Denny's...

After reading (I think!) every post in this thread, I wanted to know when is the contract up that states that the tip is included? When will/could the gratuity be removed from the DDP? Or did I read wrong that this is a possibility and the thread is about asking the managers to remove it individually after bad service???

I'm wondering if I have to budget for tips for our trip this fall (we planned on tipping over the 18% for great service anyhoo, but I need to know if we are going to be needing to pay the whole tip to be ready with cash!)

p.s. this might be another "dumbo" question *lol* but did the OP tell the server that he needed to take medication with the water? I can't imagine a server who knew that the water was needed for that purpose to be slow in bringing it: whether she was ticked her ordered alcohol or not. Maybe some feel that disclosure shouldn't have been necessary and I guess that's true, but as someone who has juggled many med times in the past, I know that you have to do what you have to do to be sure you take em on time even if it means carrying a bottle of water with you!

Contract is up at the end of the year, so if you are going this year, no biggie, tip is included in DDP, New DDP (for next year, starting Jan 1st, 08) will get announced sometime in June.

Yes I told her I needed to take a pill, yeah, I could have gotten up, walked to the lobby and drank from the drinking fountain. Yeah I could have carried a water bottle, It is not exactly life threatening medication... And again, the fact that getting the water took so long was the starting point of not getting service, not the only point of not getting service.

My partner, sitting upright but slumped, was dead asleep and snoring ... I was very tired and checking my watch often. The benifit of the doubt went out the window at 20min of waiting... if I had not been so tired from running around AK for 12 hours (evening EMH) I would have tracked her down.

Waffle House, I beleive, is the state flower in Georiga. You are lucky to drive more then two blocks before ya hit the next waffle house in Atlanta.

The ones that tend to be dirty are the franchisees... the corporate ones tend to be clean

I have to laugh at the thought of them asleep snoring, I can imagine myself after running around the theme park for the day..

I disagree with the fact that the gratuity should be taken off of the DDP. It is just psychological, but it feels like you are getting more for your money when the tip is included. I do not think that 38.99 would be worth it if I had to carry around cash for the tip. The only thing I would consider bad service would be a very rude server.

This may offend some, but I have never received service at Disney that would warrant a CM not receiving a tip or having their tip cut. Their job is to provide respectful service to the best of their ability. They are not to be anyone's slave and should not be looked down upon by patrons who feel their job choice makes them in any way inferior. Look at the job market today, most people do what is barely needed to receive their paycheck, (how many of you are on this chat page when your at work).

I'm disabled, so I'm not chatting at work. You shouldn't be on internet messageboards at work, that's a no-brainer.

It's apples and oranges though. Service industry means service. Tips should be earned based on service given.

I love nothing more than to tip big. I was never a server but I have friends who are and a sibling who was for awhile and I know how they get stiffed. I couldn't enjoy a meal if I didn't tip appropriately.

Course, I tip everybody well. My mousekeepers would attest LOL

Laren, I understand that there is a difference between the type of work when I made my point. After reading it I do not think I made myself clear, I was trying to point out that in many situations the tip is apart of the servers salary. When I was young, I worked as a server at a couple of different establishments from Pizza Hut to a Country Club and in all of these occassions my salary was only about 2.50. Everything else came from tips. There are still many people out there who work hard for the paychecks they receive. (I hope I do ) However, poor work ethic seems to be everywhere; why should we choose to punish those that can be seen while those who work out of sight keep getting a paycheck?

Oh I get ya! People would always, in an ideal world be rewarded based on their performance when it comes to salary. But unfortunately that doesn't happen. A lot of people make way too much money in my opinion for what they do or how they perform (just my opinion, but I"m thinking of sports stars in particular here) when people like EMTs and Flight Nurses make far less and save lives every day. But that's another topic entirely if I get started I won't stop *LOL*

I worked in service industries when I was healthy enough to work. None of my jobs were tip based but one was involved commission (and if you think anyone ever got rich from selling children's shoes at commission. . . *LOL*)

You are right, servers are more visible. But I don't think removing a tip for bad service is unusual punishment. It would have to be really bad for me to actually do it, but I wouldn't feel obligated to tip over the 18% disney gives if the service were just okay or below par.

I don't know if I'm making sense! I don't do that often I hope this is one of the times I pull it off

I am terrible about carrying money around I always tip on the bill so the DDP paying my meal and having to deal with how to pay the tip would be to much work for my lazy behind LOL!

I guess I just felt a little empathy for the servers at Disney. I have had indifferent servers, but never bad servers, but then again I have not ever not tipped a server anywhere. Even bad(rude) servers get a couple bucks!!!

LOL I've never not tipped either, to tell ya the truth no matter how awful the server, they've gotten a couple of bucks from me too lol and worse I have paid for, among other things, a 'haircut' that lasted 90 seconds with a shaver (it was not the cut I asked for) and left me looking like GI Jane!

I still can't believe I paid for that ! LOL

But on the flip side. . .my good hairdressers love me and are always happy cause they know how I tip! LOL

Boma, for us, is pretty much a guarantee of poor service. We ate there for the first time right after it opened, and also nearly passed out waiting for beverages on a hot day after the parks. The tip reflected my level of thirst.
We waited several years before returning last year to Boma. The service wasn't a great deal better, but it was better. We were on the DP, so I really just chalked it up to the server having her head up her ****, because the tables will be filled and most people are too afraid of looking cheap to not tip.
We are going back this year, unless the Yak & Yeti opens by September (please open, please open). If I'm in an adventurous mood, maybe I'll ask the manager to remove the tip. DH loves the food, but I know darned well I'm going to be thirsty...

Couldn't let this one go unanswered. I love grits, especially cheese grits. But this is one of those food items that not EVERYONE can prepare properly. The Cracker Barrel does a good job.

My daddy, God rest his soul, ate grits just about every morning of his life, and wouldn't touch hash browns. "We grew up hard," he'd say, "but we were never so bad off that I had to eat an Irish potato for breakfast."

Sorry again. Back to tipping and the lack thereof. I've never NOT left a tip (double negative there), but on a couple of occasions, I just left a penny. And those were isolated cases ... once at a Denny's, and once at Outback. In the Outback incident, I left a little note, because it was obvious our server was flirting with a table full of cute girls (which I understand), but not to the utter neglect of other patrons.

The topic of gratuity (tipping) runs though a great many threads and I see a trend. Many folks feel a sense of moral obligation to tip servers, housekeepers, the mailman, the gas station clerk, etc. If you have so much money you feel a need to give it away, would not he public be better served if you gave to the United Way, or the SPCA?

There is a protocol for tipping servers when you get good service, we have established when you get bad service, the tip should reflect it was bad service, though there is disagreement to what extent. But if we all want to get along, and make the world a better place (many people do, I have meet some of them) a gift to have your pet spayed or neutered might go further to making the world better instead of giving your mousekeeper $5 for doing a job that the industry has already set a value and provides said value as a wage?

For instance Deb's site, allearsnet.com, a site that no doubt everyone who frequents the boards probably has noticed, gives a chunk of her proceeds to fund Breast Cancer research for a cure. We make regular donations to Ohio Basset Rescue; we rescued both our dogs and could not have found any better. The hound we rescued from an abusive situation has come a long way and is now really, really happy everyday.

Leaving a tip for a server is one thing; the system is set up that way... but tipping housekeeping? Take those monies and use it to help those that actually cannot help themselves. I came home to my partner crying last night, and the first thing I ask when this happens is, "were you reading the OBR rescue and adoption pages again?" What people do to animals, pets even, just makes no sense to me...

If I have to tip the guy who carries my bag literally 2 feet from the curb after the taxi guy pulls it out of the trunk (and I tip HIM too for pulling it out of the trunk) and then pushes it on a nice wheely cart, I sure as heck am going to tip the hard working people who clean the toilet in my room.

That's a whole other topic. . .and I believe in giving to charity too, and I do, believe me. I am a pet lover as well.

I agree! I know it's their job to clean my room, but I still appreciate the fact that the bed is always made nicely, the bathroom is always clean, and we always have fresh towels. Plus we'll usually get something extra like a towel animal, or they'll fold a shirt that was left on the bed. I don't have lots of money, so it only ends up being a couple of dollars a day, but I still want them to feel appreciated.

As for the guy carrying my bag.. they get a tip if I asked them to do it... if someone takes it upon themselves to move my bag for me when I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself (it's on wheels after all), then I don't feel obligated to tip. I don't think I should be bullied into doing it... just my opinion...
