We just got back last night from an 8 night stay using the dining plan. It worked really well! We bought breakfast every day (usually quick service - just oatmeal and biscuits most mornings), then had a nice snack (Dole Whip, a pastry, or something similar), lunch, and dinner for "free."
The only downfall is every cast member at the restaurants encourages you to have dessert with every meal! Ye gods, we must have gained 10 pounds during the trip, even with all the walking.
We had wonderful dinners at California Grill, Artist Point, Concourse Steakhouse, and many other places and didn't have to worry about the cost of what we ordered. That was fantastic. And popping into any quick service location wherever we were that day and not having to think about it was nice as well. We definitely got more than our money's worth out of the plan every day.
Whether we would have been better off getting a discount on the room and eating more economically, I'm not sure. But since this was our first time at WDW, the dining plan was a good choice because it gave us the freedom to experiment and enjoy without guilt or worry.
