DDP with an Under 3 yr old

I completely understand your stress! I've been there twice. I just had to put it in my head that I may have to buy him a meal if he wanted. I tried to alot of pre-planning, like others' said, bringing applesauce or grapes saved from an earlier CS meal or bought as a snack. The uncrustables are great to throw in the backpack for the kids. At Le Cellier, we ordered him a cheese flatbread and of course he only ate one piece of it (dad had a great snack later)! We also had our older son, so the wait staff was awesome about bringing an extra cup of ice cream or whatever dessert older brother was getting. I sometimes got charged and sometimes didn't. Same with beverages. If I just wanted water, I'd get milk as my drink and put it in his sippy, if I wanted soda, I'd pay (sometimes) for him a child's drink. Like others' said, just don't expect it free, but if it happens, that's just more Disney magic!!

Side note: The last trip I tried the double cheeseburger, buy an extra bun trick...they'd raised the price to like $2. For a little more, I could've gotten a whole kids meal! I was so confused, I just said ok to the $2 bun! That's what I get for not paying attn at the register.

We're getting ready for our 2nd trip with our nearly 3 YO (DOB 8/25), he's a big kid who enjoys eating, easily pass for a 4 YO - we have paid for him to be on the DDP last year & this year. Even at 1 (nearly 2) he took full advantage of being on the DDP and having his "own" and not havign to share is much easier on the tantrum/meltdowns. We were able to do this because w/ DVC your DP isn't thru Magic Your Way/Free Dining. If we weren't able to do DP with him I would look for as many buffet's as possible so he could get what he wanted, and so could we.... AND I'd be prepared to purchase some meals just for him.

I have three different TS's that I see being like this during our week, and I'm a bit frustrated by it.
I just need to figure out how to get milk into him, and not really pay for it.

If it's just 3 TS why not just order the kids meal and just not worry about it anymore. We ordered a few kids meals OOP last year for an adult aged kid and it was like $8 total including the drink. So $24 and you don't have to stress about it. For milk we usually buy a big jug at the resort gift shop (it's not that pricey) and the kids would have a cup in the am and pm so drinking soda, juice, or water during the day didn't bother me as much. Some places won't charge you for his drink anyway at least at TS.

Thanks for posting this OP! I have the same thoughts, next month we'll be there with our 16 mo DD. I know in terms of quantity, I'll be able to feed her enough from my plate, but the food choices, well...I'm going to have to deal with it meal by meal. I have already been preparing my DH that ONE of us (as in not always ME) will have to consider what we order each meal if DD will eat from ours. Buffet meals will be the best for this situation I think and we have 3 ADRs for those, we'll just need to worry about the rest. In addition, I am planning on packing things I know she will eat to fill in the gaps (nutritionally, and quantity).

Your concerns are well justified - my concern is more that my son is a picky eater right now and it's hard to find something on the adult menu to share that he will like...you have a few options.

-Upgrade to Delxue plan. You will have to pay the difference between DDP & DXDP on free dinning, but you do get so much more that you're sure to have plenty for your son. It inlcudes 3 meals CS or TS - your choice. The meals inlcude dessert & appetizer which is great because depending upon the restaurant the appetizer is like an extra meal and some appetizers are great for a kids meal.
Plus you get 2 snacks per adult a day - plenty for drinks, ice cream, yogurt, fruit, etc. for you and your son. (we're on DXDP)

-Choose mostly family style or buffet meals. I know it may be hard because you have another family to consider, but at buffets and family style restaurants your little one can share as much as they want off your plate. It's the most economical way to have a meal for your child w/o having to put them on the plan.

-Choose CS meals carefully. Some CS meals are basic burgers & fries, but others are unbelievable meals. Cosmic Rays in MK has an area with chicken and ribs - you can get BBQ Chicken, Ribs, potatoes a veggie, drink and dessert as a CS - plenty for you to share.

-Pay OP for your son. The kids meals are very reasonable and if you pay OP for your son when needed it will cost much less then having to buy him a ticket so he can get the free DDP.

-Bring food & snacks for your son. We ordered some stuff from Garden Grocer last year (DS was almost 2 when we went). We had indiividual apple sauces - great complimets to any meal. And the Gerber Graduate Raviolis are great. They come in easy to carry small tubs and are fine heated or not. Again a great supplement for DS meals. We also had some of his favorite snacks with us - goldfish, etc. Again, we also did this because DS can be picky and I wanted make sure he had food he would eat. Plus sometimes a child can't wait for their food in a restaurant and having somethinf for him to eat (applesauce) while waiting was helpful.

-Check allearsnet.com for menus of all the restaurants. It will help you choose places that have foods you can share with your son.

Depending upon your family and how you like your meals & such paying OP will probably be the most economical. I believe the difference between the DDP and DXDP is about $32 per person per day. If you think between extra food for you and DH (breakfast or whatever) and you son the cost will be over $60 per day then go with the DXDP. Remember, with DXDP every meal can be table service if you want. The value for us is we all like breakfast on vacation. Plus it's my son's favorite meal. With DXDP we can go to a character breakfast every morning - DS eats well, iit's a fun way to start the day and we're all fueld up for an active morning in the parks. Lunch is usually CS and then dinner TS. Also with DXDP you don't mind using 2 table credits for special meals - this year we're going to Mickey's Backyard BBQ whihc is 2 credits pre person. Plus you get refillable resort mugs which are good for mornig coffee or a cool drink at the end of the day. You do have way too many snack credits - but at the end of the tri[ we use left over snack credits to buy lillipops or certain individual Disney candies and such to take home. Some are good snacks for the plane - others are nice little gifts for kids and such.

We're going during free dining as well, but we're staying at DVC so cannot get the free dining - so we're paying the full price for DXDP and it's well worth it. Last your our OP would have been like $400 more if we didn't have DXDP (we were 3 adults and 1 child under 3).

If you want a meal plan that you don't have to lay out 1 cent more ofr food while at Disney then go DXDP. If the DDP is more than enough for your and DH, the OP costs for your son will be very reasonable.

If it were me (and it will be come September) I would purchase a CS meal and bag it and take it into the restaurant. Explain to the CM that you bought a CS meal for DS who has no interest in the food you will be ordering. I can;t imagine it being a problem.

By taking a CS meal in for him, you're looking at $5 instead of the TS $7 and you can still get him mac and cheese or chicken and fries, etc. that he likes.

You said you are looking at three TS meals where this may be an issue, so look to spend an extra $15 for him for those meals. You would probably spend that just buying the snacks to take along. And for what it's worth... we have wasted alot of money on snacks that the kids didn't eat/want. Just plan on buying the $5 meal, and if at that time, he;s not hungry or he just wants a few bites of yours, don't buy it and you'll have wasted nothing.

Good luck... enjoy your trip! :goodvibes
