This may be a dumb question, but can I get the DDP for my son and me if I have an AP and he has a regular MYW ticket? Or do we both have the same kind of ticket? I read something somewhere that made it sound like we have to both have MYW tickets to get the DDP. :confused3

No.
Not only does each person on your reservation have to have the same MYW pass reserved, it has to be purchased in conjunction with a room reservation thereby making your reservation a package. The DDP is available only as part of a Disney package.

exception: Guests staying at DVC properties using DVC points can purchase the Dining Plan without any ticket requirement.

You'll want to do what I am doing. My DD and I are going and I have an annual pass. I got the package with 1 day tickets. I will be upgrading her ticket after we arrive to an AP because we are going again next spring - but you can just add additional days. I am saving my 1 day ticket to be applied to the cost of my AP renewal. As long as you don't use the ticket it does not expire.

I remember reading reports from guests indicating that they weren't allowed to upgrade any of the tickets on the package, unless they upgraded them all, until after the end of the reservation (something about if the passes are removed from the package, which would be necessary to make one a different duration than the rest, it would "break" the Dining Plan credits :confused3).

Does this mean that those who exchange into a DVC property through Interval International are not eligible? :confused3

II folks pay a special fee to obtain access to Member Service. With that access they can arrange for purchase of the Dining Plan.

I recall reading where guests on a package had to go to a ticket window, vs. a resort, and have the tickets taken off their room key in order to do things like upgrade to an AP, and this preserved the dining plan portion of the package. Can anyone else confirm this?

We will have different ticket needs in Dec. and the CM I spoke with (who seemed pretty knowledgable) said we just all needed to start with a one day base ticket for the DDP and we could upgrade as we needed when we arrive. I upgraded tix to different days at the resort on a trip in Nov, but we weren't on the DDP that trip.

Would love to hear from someone who has upgraded their 1 day tickets as that is what the CM reservationist told us to do since we have some with old tickets to be used up and one with an AP. We booked everyone with 1 day tickets and even when I made some changes to the reservation the new CMs said the same thing - just upgrade the ones you need to and save the others to apply towards AP renewal etc. They did not specify where or how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.
