After dinner in Italy, I noticed on our itemized tab that the tip was not included in the total cost of the meal. Does the establishment add the tip later. This question is specific to the DDP. By the way, Italy was our worst meal of the week.

Yes, with the DDP the tip is supposed to be included, however, we always leave a smaller than usual tip.....that's just us, and our way of thanking the server!
Are tax and tips included? The price of the plan includes tax and all expected gratuities for the included items. Extras and add-ons are charged-for separately, and tax and gratuities are automatically added to those charges. The automatic gratuity is even added to separate checks for meals for non-Dining Plan guests dining with Dining Plan patrons (in most cases).
How much does the server get in terms of gratuities? The servers receive an 18% tip. For Disney-owned restaurants, their tip is computed based on what you actually order. Some non-Disney-owned restaurants base the tip on how much they get reimbursed from Disney.
I've also noticed alot of comments here that if you have a bar tab, or order anything else in addition to your DDP meal, the 18% is automatically added as well. Which leaves me in an a perdicament of deciding if the server really *deserves* anything extra, in additon to what they already get. I hate it when tips are added automatically. I usually leave a little more than 18 %, but would feel strange leaving $2-$3 on the table.
"Most" of the time, any additional charges (even whole meals ordered by friends dining with you, but not on the Dining Plan, so therefore paying for their meals in cash) have the 18% automatic gratuity included. There have been a few cases reported where that wasn't the case, so always check to be sure.
don't be. My ex whop served at disney loved that. 2 or 3 of those extra couple dollars would buy her a bigger or so after work at apple bees/fridays with friends.
The plan includes tips. However, you can leave more if you feel as if you had really good service, or just typically leave more than what the plan includes for the server.
OK thanks for the response, it's just in the UK servers get paid more than the US and so we are not 'expected' to tip although we usually do - however we would not tip 20% of the bill - usually between the equivalent of $2 - $6 depending on service - I just wanted to make sure I was following what was expected in the US.
