DDP and HDDR or Luau???

Here's the story...2 couples going in Oct. One couple is paying for the DxDDP for both couples...that's how they chose to pay us back for use of DVC points for their stay. Okay...no problem. They haven't paid for it, and will probably do it by the end of summer. So, the DxDDP won't actually be on our reservations until then.
But, I'm thinking about doing either the Luaa or HDDR with them....they've never done either. I realize that it has to be paid for when you book it. But what happens when the DxDDP is added at a later date?? Of course, I can't book the day I want since the booking dates stop the day before our arrival...even though I have all my other ADRs made. Go figure.
But since I've never had to pay in advance for something and then be using the DDP, I have no idea how it works. I want to be able to give the right info to the other couple so they know what they are dealing with.

If you have DDP or DxDP booked at the time you make the ADR, they just take a credit card hold/guarantee, and charge you the credits when you actually get the tickets (I got my HDDR tickets at my resort shortly after check-in). Note that this option apparently doesn't work (at least not reliably) through the website.

If you don't have a plan booked, they charge you in advance, but will then refund the charges back to your card if you use credits to "pay" at the time you get the tickets. In theory, you could call and try to get this done in advance if you add DDP or DxDP at a later date, but it typically requires dropping the ADR and re-adding it, which brings certain risks into play.
