When I booked, I told them I would have the DDE card, but had not obtained it yet, and gave my credit card for the "hold".
When I read stuff about paying in advanced, I called and asked about it.
What they did in my case was they put me down as a "
DDP" guest - at least they entered it in the same was as a DDP guest. Basically, I still owe the full amount, payable at the time of the ADR. My credit card is only if I'm a no-show. So when I get there, I can explain that I have DDE and its not pre-paid, and it will be settled there. Dining currently shows me with a balance due, and my credit card has not been charged at all.
If I did have DDP, they'd cancel the bill with the DDP credits.
But from what I understand, in most cases you must pay in advance. If you present your DDE card at your meal, they will make up the difference with a gift card for 20% of the meal-only cost, as a sort of "refund". Of course, since its a disney gift card, you have to spend it with them anyways...
