DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.

I’m as high up as I want to go. lol. Our proprietor said I would be a good candidate for the TA program. (Temporary assignment, they move you into a management position for six months, at the end of six months they either make you a manager or send you back). I thanked her and I really appreciate but, I’m not a spring chicken anymore, I had a wonderful 40 year career in the hvac, plumbing and electrical field. I really enjoy living my dream working here and love coming work every day, let’s not spoil it. lol. There are a boat load of “kids” trying to make something for themselves, let them have a chance, it’s their turn.
Disney is an excellent company to work for, despite what you read in some places. It’s like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it. Everyone starts at the bottom but, you work hard, show up for work on time, put yourself forward, get noticed and you will have the opportunity to move up. Very rarely an outsider gets highered above a frontline cm. They promote within. Networking, something I had no idea was a thing, the more people know you, worked with you, the easier it gets. Everyday I run into people who I worked with at some point or I run into a leader who I’ve worked for at one point or a leader you never met but says, I’ve heard some real good things about you. For some, it’s easy. I’ve had 40 experience in dealing with people so for me, communication is easy.
The younger people, like I was 40 years ago, I see my younger self everyday, may have a big degree but lack the humble, communication skills required to become successful. Setting an example, being management or the next step higher doesn’t mean you take lunch longer, and what I call, walking around like you own the place. It means setting a good example, jumping in, doing the work that people under you do when things get going. I always get asked for advice how to move up, the first piece of advice I give them, don’t let anyone out work you. Stick out in a good way, management is watching and that is what they are looking for. Nobody notices normal. There is no easy way to get ahead at work or life but to work your @$$ off. I’m not to computer savvy, I was told every step of the way, “I can teach you how to use the computer, I can’t teach you work ethic and what is inside you.”
Or
If you just want to come to work every day, push some buttons, say welcome and thank you, that’s fine too. Nothing wrong with that but, don’t expect someone to come up to you and ask you if you want to move up.
Some handle it, some don’t. It’s not junior high school, it’s a multi billion dollar corporation and they got that way for a reason.
Its amazing how many people forget that doing the minimum will get you the minimum.
I know there are employers out there that will take advantage of that, and expect the moon from you but have no intention of rewarding you for that. But the majority of your life you only get out what you put in.

Thank you.

On the other hand... there's something about employers wanting to pay minimum wage while expecting more than minimum effort.

The minimum wage in Pennsylvania is $7.25 an hour. Cost of living plus alllll the tax’s Pa. has……
Florida is $12.00 an hour, no tax’s and like anywhere else, the city’s are expensive to live in, including the Orlando area.
There is no one making minimum wage or even close to it where I work. In fact the company I work for pays two and a half times what Pa minimum wage is to start in any role and some even start higher. Are you going to get rich, no. Nobody works there for the money. But, like I say to a few, if you don’t like it here, you can go sit in another employers bathroom for hours, hide at some other employers company and lean on their walls, your not forced to work here. If you feel what you’re doing is worth a lot more, go get man, it’s a free country. I wish you all the luck in the world.

Like I said there is always companies out there that want you to do the managers job but don't pay you as much as the guy mowing the grass.
Most places you can get a job will reward hard work with more work, but that comes with the pay to back it up.

Happy Friday guys. My work calendar and the real calendar actually line up so I get to enjoy the 3 day weekend.... mostly. I am on call but will be traveling to my dads for a family reunion and some Dove hunting.
'Tis a miracle! Today is my Monday... right smack in the middle of the 3-day weekend. Ah well. Every day is a holiday when you work here.

Hey, Fellas!

Been a while, but I've been pretty busy. Life's been pretty good, except that work's gotten a lot busier. About a week and a half a go they let a receptionist at a pediatrics office I sometimes work at, which was their second receptionist they let go. This receptionist really needed to go, but the problem was she was trilingual, Portuguese (being her first language), English and Spanish. This hurts because we have a lot of Portuguese and Spanish speaking families in our practice. We do have a translator service we can use, but it takes time to use that service. I'm now at pediatrics a lot more instead of floating.

Several weeks ago I started having problems with my right knee. It got so bad that about a week and a half ago, the same day they I had to go the receptionist go, I wound up in the urgent care because my knee hurt so bad. They couldn't find anything, except for some mild arthritis I didn't know about, so they referred me to an orthopedic surgery office. Well, the very next day I wound up back in urgent care because I felt, and heard, a "pop" in my right knee. Was that painful. Still don't know exactly what happened, but the orthopedic people did the push pull test on my knee and I didn't tear anything. The working theory is that I had a baker's cyst behind the knee popped and let go. The knee is still a bit sore and stiff, but I'm working through it, along with a prescription of 800 mg of ibuprofen. Unfortunately this happened right in the middle of the run of my show, so I had a knee brace and a cane. Being a play, Death of a Salesman, we thankfully didn't have any dancing, but it did change how I did somethings on stage. I'm now out of the brace, but still use the can if the knee gets too sore.

As for the show I was in, Death of a Salesman, it was a wonderful show. It got a lot of buzz locally and sold the 6th highest number of tickets for that venue we were at, so I'm so proud of that. Now off to the next show, which I don't have yet. However, I am preparing for a show for late next year, so we'll see.

Quitting your job, come on down!! We can find you something to do! Fast paced, you’re in the germ capital of the world but you will have a lot of fun, I know I’m having a blast in my new role. I’m doing ride alongs these next couple days. Our department manages a few areas I never knew even existed. I was in awe of an operation that exists, I knew it got done but didn’t know how. I experienced it yesterday, all day! Wow! The amount of people and effort that goes into things that visitors have no clue. Today, I’m on another observation ride along. This operation people know it goes on but have no idea what it takes, unfortunately, pixie dust just don’t work behind the scenes. I’m looking forward to witnessing how it gets done.
I think they should allow behind the scenes operations to be viewed by some of the public, let them see why a ticket cost what a ticket cost and see the thousands of people that visitors have no idea they are there and what they do.
Sorry, you know the deal, what happens behind the wall, stays behind the wall.

Don't think I haven't thought about it. I had a chance to move to Florida after I graduated from college but I was pretty serious with my now wife, so that wasn't going to happen. Now its not even an option. My wife wouldn't move, and I respect that.

I agree with what you said. I'm a natural when it comes to communicating and how I interact with people. I didn't know how much this has worked to my advantage until my scheduling supervisor told that she was talking to a vice president of the healthcare group about the pediatric office I'm frequently in. She told this VP that she has her two top floats there, me and this young lady named Megan. I was told that as soon as this VP heard my name she said, "Oh my God, I love Steve. He's always in a good mood, puts people at ease and bends over backwards to help people." So you are correct, people are always watching.

Happy Sunday everyone! The last few weeks have been a whirlwind. Back to the fun tomorrow, I work five in a row, two off, two on, two off and back to five in a row.
My days off are going from Thursday, Friday ( for regular week people) to Monday,Tuesday so I make out a bit in the trade off. Our days off and what shift we work are all done by bid and are based off seniority.
If anyone is going to be in the World on the 12th, I will be hanging out as a civilian in Epcot. I have a noon reservation at Teppen but I’ll be there checking out what’s going on for food and wine.

Interesting. All our shifts are rotating 5 on 3 off (although in practice it's 7 on 1 off... been short-staffed for years now).
There is one shift that's M-F and it's based on seniority. Except for years, no one senior wants it. If no one wants it, then it goes to the least senior person.

Oh geez... I have no idea if I'll ever get back there! Lack of funds or lack of time or both.

We do it every six months. All done on line now. For days off you put in the top five choices and for shifts, opens, mids or closing. I’m in a small department , there are only five people that do what I do so it’s pretty easy. One opener, one mid and two closers. I open weekends and close during the week which is what I wanted. Its only the full time people who have to bid. Kids get their hours because they live in company housing and they make sure there is rent to take out at the end of the week for their living quarters. Part time gets what and if there is anything left over. I’m guaranteed forty hours a week. Pending what you do, if your part time, you could go months without a shift.

I will not be there, but I can try and arrange to have others bother/annoy you as needed. :thumbsup2

We're looking at next summer as a possibility. My youngest is 10 now and last time we went to WDW he wasn't tall enough for the big rides. So we feel like we owe him the full experience. I've started applying for a second mortgage now to cover the trip.

Oh geez... I have no idea if I'll ever get back there! Lack of funds or lack of time or both.
This makes me sad. It's going to happen. Someday, it will happen.

second mortgage for disney trip? I didn't know you lived in a $3.2 million mansion. Otherwise, you're gonna need more than a second mortgage.

On a totally separate topic. I read that a good kidney can fetch up to $150,000.
Funny, that's (purely a coincidence, I'm sure) almost the same amount you'd pay for a family of four for lightning lane passes for the week.
This makes me sad. It's going to happen. Someday, it will happen.
Maybe someday.

Yikes! Hard to make a buck!
To be fair, you know that going in. Part time people are required to give a minimum of three days a week availability. You pick what days you are available and what time you want to start and shift length. So, if you give them 24/7, your chance are greater than Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday 9am.
Another thing you can do, let just say merchandising, you can pick up, trade for shifts anywhere on property, unless specialized areas that require different training. I was food trained because of Club Cool. I’m also alcohol trained. lol. So if I wanted to work on my days off, I can work in food and booze. lol. I also have to maintain those proficiency, but I don’t want to lose them.
They only draw back is locations are spread out over 40 sq. miles. You have to know where to get the costume you are required to wear and even worse, where you go to clock in. A lot of the college kids do it, I’m too old for that nonsense. lol.
You also get all your perks as a pt. person. So if you want to work one day a month for your park passes, that’s perfectly fine. There are people who do that.
As full time, you have to work x amount of hours a year or you lose your ft status and benefits and put to pt.
College kids have to work x amount of hours a week to cover their room and board.
They are some rules but you don’t have to stay at the same role for ever. I’ve been there just shy of three years and I’m in my third role already.
