DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
If you make it to MCO, I'll see you there.
Well thats a little bit cool. Hope to see you there, maybe a cheeky Kona revisit?

It's been my (limited) experience that people from Europe, when coming here for the first time, are quite taken aback at the distance between... everything.
::yes::
I think as I land in Montreal, I'm still nearly closer to home than I am to you.....

I think as I land in Montreal, I'm still nearly closer to home than I am to you.....
Not quite... but not too far off either!
Winnipeg - Montreal: 1,800km
Montreal - London: 5,200km

Morning, Gents! Hope all is well on this Sunday morning. Had a very lazy day yesterday and enjoyed it...though, truth be told, I'm ready to start work because I've had too many lazy days....maybe next week. Oh, so a friend of mine tagged me on this Boston law firm's Book Face page/post just before Christmas. Apparently, this firm gives away gifts every year, and all you have to do to enter to win is tag someone. My friend's won something from them before, so this is legit. Well, he tagged me and I just found out I won. Imagine that, me winning something. I never win stuff like this, so this is nice. I won a 10" Android tablet, something I've been wanting but didn't want to have to go out and buy. I actually have an iPhone, so this will be different with the Android operating system, I'll it.

I've been watching vlogs on/about Disney World on the Tube of You for years now, but usually on my computer in my office so as not to bother the rest of the family with them, makes me feel like I'm watching some kind of adult film
DW (hearing noise in the background): "Honey? What's that noise? What ARE you watching?"
Me (quickly pauses video and quickly changes to another open tab): "Nothing...just an add that popped up?"
DW (deciding not to come into the office to see what it was): "Ok, it sounded weird and had to ask (then walks away)
Me (clicks back on the tab with the Disney World video): "Oh man, that's nice! I so can't wait to ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train!" :teeth::lmao:

Well, this weekend I decided to take out into the open (that just sounds bad) by watching them on the TV. I usually watch Dreams Unlimited, Dis Unplugged and The Tim Tracker, well, I started a new one, Mickey Views. The first episode I watched was on the Polynesian and Grand Floridian resorts. As a family we sat down and watched them together and enjoyed the video. This may not be a subtle hint, but in a way it is. I've been wanting to take a trip to the World for a while now, but haven't really bugged my wife on it. Yes we have talked about a trip to the World and how we'd surprise my DD, and my DD has even asked about a trip, so are planning for one. This way I can kind of keep it on everyone's mind and watch something the whole family can watch. Subtle? Smooth? I think so. :teeth:

Happy Boxing Day. We boxed up all the Christmas stuff today, which I figure is the origin of the name. Waiting on Christmas themed towels to finish drying, and then I will pack up everything in the storage underneath the stairs.

That's gotta be where Boxing Day comes from. The day we all box up all of the Christmas stuff. :teeth:

Green pez candies?

Like little green Baby Yoda poop. :lmao:

No arguments here. Although... I didn't particularly like the character, as it seemed (to me at least) pretty apparent that they were hoping to spin her off on her own movie series.

A spin off with Halle Berry's Character as the American Version of 007? Interesting thinking. Thankfully they didn't try it.

Funny. I was thinking of Rosamund Pike as well. Something about her.. ::yes::

Right?!

Morning gents.
I'm a bit annoyed with myself today. Chance to sleep in and... up at 6am. :sad2:
Maybe tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Sorry, in my sugar/cream/meat coma i had Vancouver in my head.......
It's a big country.
Distance Vancouver - Montreal = 3,700km

Now if you'd decided to visit Newfoundland and landed in St. John's, you'd be 5,000km from Vancouver and 3,700km from London.
Hmmm...
At 3,200km Winnipeg - St. John's... You're almost closer to a Canadian city than I am. And if I did live in Vancouver... you would be.
I just found out I won. Imagine that, me winning something. I never win stuff like this, so this is nice. I won a 10" Android tablet
Nice. Congrats on the prize.

Happy Sunday, or rather, just another day of retirement. More EPL this AM, featuring Dan's Hammers singing bubbles. We made.it over freezing after 2 mklisersbly cold days.

Pre-internet, if you wanted to see what a country looked like, you opened an atlas.

If you didn't pay attention to scale... well, in the above maps, the distance from Winnipeg to Halifax is roughly the same as Cologne to Dresden.
We had some people from Germany coming to Halifax... and they asked if my dad could pick them up at the airport.
It's only about a 36 hour drive.
It's been my (limited) experience that people from Europe, when coming here for the first time, are quite taken aback at the distance between... everything.

I read some cancel culture BS piece about how the USA being drawn larger than it actual size is the cause of racism. :sad2:

For me, ahem, I know that size doesn't matter. :lmao: NYC has a larger population than my whole state, which is interesting to consider on any size scale map.

Well thats a little bit cool. Hope to see you there, maybe a cheeky Kona revisit?

Maybe I missed something in the translation. Are you flying into Montreal or Orlando?

Congrats on winning the tablet and planning the Disney trip.

We are going to try the week in December 2021, before elementary and HS are out, snd the week before super peak Christmas time at WDW. I'll book at the Boardwalk in a couple of weeks. I'd like to try the Grand Floridean, but will have to wait for 7 month window and convince DW to stay there. Since I'm working for Disney vacations now, if I'm still not employed, then we may stay at Vero Beach resort and just drive up a day for a MVMCP.

Morning all.

Expect it to be another quiet day. DW's mom was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Day so everything has been lowkey since then. She'll be there for a few more days so it will just be DS and I visiting my folks tomorrow for a couple of days.

Have a good Sunday all.

Just because you don't understand what a Mercator projection is, doesn't mean you have to attribute a negative label to it.

I have heard however that schools are switching to Peters projection maps. While they do show sizes more accurately, they are also not particularly accurate when it comes to shapes.

What I do like is The True Size Of ...
You can pick a country and drag it around to see just how big it is compared to others.
A good example is Greenland, which is huge on a Mercator map.
But drag it around and you can see that it's smaller than Argentina.
Or that you could fit three USAs in Africa.
For me, ahem, I know that size doesn't matter. :lmao:
A guy goes on a date.
One thing leads to another and they wind up in the bedroom.
The man undresses and the woman, perhaps a tad insensitively, points at his manhood and says. "Who do you think you're going to please with that?"
The man glances down, shrugs and says confidently. "Me!"
NYC has a larger population than my whole state, which is interesting to consider on any size scale map.

Sorry to hear that. Will she be all right?

Sorry to hear that. Will she be all right?

I think so. She had a stroke just as we were starting to open gifts. She was also diagnosed with A-Fib. They admitted her to keep an eye on things and have a scheduled an MRI for Tuesday which is the first day they could get her in given the time of year.

Holy crap!

Praying.

Morning, well, afternoon all. Bit of LEGO, bit of Monopoly and some pepto bismol on the agenda today.
Apart from that, might watch a Bond film. Don't know what prompted me to do that.
More EPL this AM, featuring Dan's Hammers singing bubbles.
No much singing going on there mate, we were awful in the first half.
Maybe I missed something in the translation. Are you flying into Montreal or Orlando?
Sorry, maybe I did. I thought you meant you were out in Disney in October when were out there, not Dec 2021. I'm in MCO Oct 22, and Canada Dec 18.
She'll be there for a few more days so it will just be DS and I visiting my folks tomorrow for a couple of days.
Hope she's OK mate, all the good vibes from over here.
NYC has a larger population than my whole state, which is interesting to consider on any size scale map.
London has over double Kentucky's population as well. You have 40,000 sqm for 4m people, we have 607 sq m for 9m. That's a bit mind blowing.
The man glances down, shrugs and says confidently. "Me!"
:rotfl2:
The one and only correct answer.
At 3,200km Winnipeg - St. John's... You're almost closer to a Canadian city than I am. And if I did live in Vancouver... you would be.
I can't believe Jeff hasn't popped over for a cup of tea.
I just looked on Google maps, apparently there is "light traffic", so it would only take 41 hours to drive from Vancouver to Montreal.

Hopefully the Chief is tearin' up the Kingdom today.
Have a great day fellas, may see you later.

On a seperate note, the football watchers among us, fancy doing a zoom for the Superbowl?

might watch a Bond film. Don't know what prompted me to do that.
How very odd! No idea how that could've happened.
Any one in particular?
I just looked on Google maps, apparently there is "light traffic", so it would only take 41 hours to drive from Vancouver to Montreal.
It's Canada. There's too much emptiness for it to not be light traffic.

Evening all. Anyone watching the Packers and Titans in the snow bowl? I always like these type of games.

Greenland is probably the worst example. Yes, I think it is fun to do the actual comparison.

Prayers for her and your family.

No much singing going on there mate, we were awful in the first half.

First 1/2 was awful. No shots on goal. I was surprised with 2 equalizers. They got lucky.

Sorry, maybe I did. I thought you meant you were out in Disney in October when were out there, not Dec 2021. I'm in MCO Oct 22, and Canada Dec 18.

Yes, we will miss you then. But, maybe you can get a different scale map and the drive from Canada to WDW will be shorter.

London has over double Kentucky's population as well. You have 40,000 sqm for 4m people, we have 607 sq m for 9m. That's a bit mind blowing.

It is. Even worse is that I live in a subdivision on a 1/5 acre inside a city of under 100K people. My grandparents had a 30 acre farm, but DW didn't want to live in the country. With more time on my hands, it's even worse. At least we have our .... well, there's bourbon.

We also have no professional sport teams in our entire state. It turns out two main colleges conspired to keep them out. We have a soccer club a division under MLS (and you didn't think it could get worse). And, we have a baseball team in a division under MLB. Of course, no relegation or promotion here.

Morning chaps from a frosty London. LEGO and OSMO with the kids today. Today could be a shorts and hoodie day (my version of a Pyjama day)

We have a soccer club a division under MLS (and you didn't think it could get worse)
Jesus, one level under MLS? I think we could get a game. Darcy's at the back, I'm in goal, Norm, you're gonna have to be our midfield general mate.
Any one in particular?
Spectre, never seen it. Still haven't. Started watching Montreal Yoo Toob videos.

Morning, Gents! Hope everyone survived the weekend. I don't have much today except I'm heading into Boston to go pick up my prize. Having worked in Boston for years, I know that between Christmas and New Years traffic is light, probably more so with Covid, so it shouldn't be a problem heading in. They said in a Book Face message that I can come by the office between today and the 30th, so I'm going to do this without calling before hand. And as a a just cause, I'm bringing my camera along. Figured I'll swing over to the USS Constitution and the USS Cassin Young for some pictures...even though they're closed. I'll be able to get some good pictures without anyone around...providing that I can get onto the pier. Well...that's it. Have fun, gents.

Morning gents.
I'm a bit annoyed with myself today. Chance to sleep in and... up at 6am. :sad2:
Maybe tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Isn't that always the case? I've given up on sleeping in. If I can manage a nap later in the day I'll do that instead.

It's a big country.

Nice. Congrats on the prize.

Ok, I have to ask, "Dan's Hammers singing bubbles?" I have an image of hammers singing a song about bubbles.

I read some cancel culture BS piece about how the USA being drawn larger than it actual size is the cause of racism. :sad2:

This cancel culture BS is annoying. I'm starting to see a little at a time, but there's going to be big blow back at some point on this. People are getting annoyed at this whole cancel culture crap.

Congrats on winning the tablet and planning the Disney trip.

Thanks, though I'm not officially planning a trip yet. I'm figuring we'll start picking dates once I can get permanent work...which I'm hoping will be soon.

I admit that I'd not heard the term "Mercator projection" before, so I had to look it up. Once I looked it up I recognized it. And that's the problem, people aren't understanding what they are seeing/doing/speaking. They just assume something because they are told rather than looking it up to understand it.

I think so. She had a stroke just as we were starting to open gifts. She was also diagnosed with A-Fib. They admitted her to keep an eye on things and have a scheduled an MRI for Tuesday which is the first day they could get her in given the time of year.

I don't think I'll be watching the Super Bowl, but I'll jump on a zoom chat with everyone.

Jesus, one level under MLS? I think we could get a game. Darcy's at the back, I'm in goal, Norm, you're gonna have to be our midfield general mate.

So I have to ask, what does the rest of the world think of American Major League Soccer? I know we're new to this whole soccer, rest of the world football, thing.

Spectre, never seen it. Still haven't. Started watching Montreal Yoo Toob videos.

It was a good movie, I'd recommend it.

First 1/2 was awful. No shots on goal. I was surprised with 2 equalizers. They got lucky.
You have had the benefit of only watching them a wee while.
West Ham were always famous of having a bit of a soft belly, i.e if they 2-0 up, and the other team scored, you would put money on them losing. They are a lot steelier in the last year or so, we don't give up leads and we get points out of games we don't really deserve anything out. It's probably because we are lot fitter than we were.

So I have to ask, what does the rest of the world think of American Major League Soccer? I know we're new to this whole soccer, rest of the world football, thing.

I can't speak for the rest of the planet, but I can give you my view.
Most of the teams in the MLS would be OK/good in the third tier of English football. The top teams maybe LA & Seattle would last maybe a season in the Prem, but would likely be relegated, and would be a good second tier team same level of someone like West Brom, or C Palace. It's painfully slow, the passing is a bit meh, the keepers are actually pretty good. Atlanta seem to be doing the right way, picking younger better players, but are they shining because of the opposition? No one really knows.

To be fair though I have watched the Prem (which in MHO is the best league in the world) live for 20 odd years, the speed of the game is breathtaking, and you don't quite get it on TV which gives the illusion that all games look the same speed, and they really aren't.

I guess the best analogy would be the old NFL Europe. Most of the best players in that league couldn't cut it in the NFL either because they were too old, or just not quite good enough, hence them being in the league in the first place. Rooney being a good example. Was a Marquee signing for DC Utd, left there to go to an average Championship (2nd tier) team, didn't last a season. I'm sure in 20-30 years it will be a contender for one of the good leagues in the world, but right now it's miles off.

I know some guys on here think its better than that, but that's my honest view. It's just too young.
