DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
they refuse to hire replacements, so everyone is left to do more with less help.
This seems to be every business's mantra these days. Do more with less. People all over are getting burned out.
They had a chance to hire me back in December of last year, but didn't. Then they had two other chances, and didn't. They finally made me an offer, but I had another offer right around the same time, two actually, the Post Office and the law firm position. I was told that they weren't going to put a second person in the stockroom, big mistake, and that Bill will have to make due. Well, now they're going to have no one in the stockroom unless they can find a replacement before he leaves. Karma.
Karma. ::yes::
I've seen this a lot...sometimes it seems like the only way workplaces learn to appreciate their employees or how to properly run things is for them to lose all of their good people.
Very much agree with this statement.
Careful. You'll get the thread closed again by the mods.
Well, I'm back at work. Boo...Hiss...
For... two weeks? Or was it 10 days? And... you're on days, this cycle?
But you know, it pays those pesky bills that keep showing up, so it's all good.
Just stop opening your mail. That'll stop that.
I had been doing well avoiding social media and news and my mental health was improving.
I hear you. I go on the Book of Faces very little... but when I do, I see a lot garbage and more people buying in to the garbage.
It astounds me just how gullible people can be.
"Well, 400 leading scientists with a combined experience of over 8,000 years of experience say this... but Herbie the teen dropout said no, so I'm going with Herbie."
we went to Lambert's Cafe, home of the throwed rolls, yesterday and the keto train crashed hard. Rolls and all you can eat fried okra for me. Google the restaurant if you want, but they literally throw rolls to you.
All right, that sounds pretty fun... and funny. :)
I'll change that to:
Me: "I have the flu, and will probably take out the office".
Employer: "Come in anyway".

That's my experience with most of my employers/ bosses.
Your version is more accurate.
25 years ago, my senior year at college, I broke my arm at UPS (work accident), and had surgery that night with 2 plates and 10 screws to keep it together. The next day, I called the Dean of the Department and Professor to ask for an exception for the final exam scheduled the following day, he said I could just fail the class answer, re-take it, and try to graduate in the fall. I took the final on pain meds, with my right arm in a splint/ wrap, the hand I write with, and got a C in the class to graduate.
When my wife was dx with pneumonia and our girls were in day care, my boss gave me 1 day of sick leave, and said I was fired if I didn't come show up the next day because there was a presentation, & he was a big idiot that couldn't fill in for me.
:sad2:
I think we all have similar stories. And really... none of us should.

Afternoon O Captains, My Captains, from a drizzly mother country.
Waaaaaay too many calls and things to do in Bricksburg. President Business is keeping us off the streets. I now have an overloaded calendar through Easter 2021, as I picked up 4 extra projects just this week.

OK, the first thing I thought was "Camel Toe Day"?
But hey, whatever works...
You may be less than shocked to know that's where my mind went as well.
We are required to keep a sheet to keep up with our work hours to show that we are working enough hours. When they go over 40, there is no extra pay and I have to "prove" overtime to flex off the hours.
And yet 51% of my compatriots voted to leave the institution that legislated against pretty much all the work crimes that have been referenced here, so they could have a blue passport and not have our houses fixed cheaply by Polish people. Way to "take back control". A bit like the way a Turkey takes control of the Christmas Dinner. You might be the main event, but you are sure as shizzle getting stuffed along the way.
We've had it so much better.
Not to sound too dystopian, but I cant see a way out either. There's no rational dialogue.
I asked him why, and he told me, "I'm tired of doing the job of two people, and they're not going to hand out raises this year."
Everyone could see this coming a mile off, right?
Wednesday. Just Wednesday.
That it is, my friend. That it is.

Have a great rest of the day chaps, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be burning the midnight oil today.

For two weeks. Yeah, I am on day shift this time. So I won't feel quite so much like a zombie. But I'll have to attend meetings. Pros and Cons...

You may be less than shocked to know that's where my mind went as well.
Knock me over with a feather from the shock of that surprise!

You were ripped off!
To be sure.
Just one instance among many.

I miss the America I grew up in.
See, that's the thing...
This -is- the world that I grew up in, and little has actually changed since I was a child. The only real difference between now and then is that folks now say out loud (and with pride) things they used to say with but a wink and a nod (or when they were pretty sure the "group" or "club" they were hanging with at the time was in agreement).

It almost sounds like a form of compensation, which would certainly be attacked as an abomination down this way.

Yeah, we do that to.
Confuses me mightialy.

A bit like the way a Turkey takes control of the Christmas Dinner.
Will be pilfering that particular analogy.

It reminds me on one we use down here for explaining the differance between "involvement" and "commitment"...

The Hen may be involved with breakfast...
But the Swine is committed.

And that five second screenplay was better then nearly all the films I've seen as of late.

Ah yes. I'm familiar. <midnight shift> "Ahhhh… quiet and solitude.... Gawd I'm tired." <day shift> "Ahhh… not on the night shift, but boy am I busy.... Gawd I'm tired."
The only real difference between now and then is that folks now say out loud (and with pride) things they used to say with but a wink and a nod (or when they were pretty sure the "group" or "club" they were hanging with at the time was in agreement).
Interesting. Can you give me an example?

Mornin', Gents! Not much happened yesterday, so a nice quiet day of trying to file paperwork away that was left for me to do and wasn't told about the filing system. Oh, I figured it out, I just can't find half the files I need. Eh, it keeps me busy. Well, have a good day, and we'll chat on the other side.

I was on medical leave.

I misread that, but still...you were made to month-end stuff while on medical leave? That's messed up.

Salaried "associate" (they don't call us employees) ,so...

Nope.

You never should have had to work while on medical leave. My thoughts anyways.

Well, I'm back at work. Boo...Hiss...
But you know, it pays those pesky bills that keep showing up, so it's all good.

Damn that work thing. Always getting in the way of things.

So the story of my afternoon in the backyard:
Forecast called for mainly sun with showers possible.
Ended up being overcast all afternoon, cool, with more rain than expected.
Cat was ticked off she couldn't get outside, so was sulking asleep on the couch.
I did my drinking in the family room.
I did finish a bottle, but I didn't mention there was only 4 drinks left in it (it's funnier without mentioning that)
It was still a fairly relaxing and enjoyable afternoon.
Also helps that hockey is on all afternoon and evening these days.

Sometimes it's best to leave out the details, my friend.

OK, the first thing I thought was "Camel Toe Day"?
But hey, whatever works...

What?! There's a Camel Toe Day?! :thumbsup2:hyper:

You were ripped off!

uh yep....ripped off. The life of a salaried person.

Morning all. FIL is feeling better so we went to Lambert's Cafe, home of the throwed rolls, yesterday and the keto train crashed hard. Rolls and all you can eat fried okra for me. Google the restaurant if you want, but they literally throw rolls to you.

Good to hear your FiL is feeling better. And as for the diet? Sometimes its good to just toss it out for one meal.

I always hate to hear that those type of poor management decisions effect others. Sounds like you made the right call.

I get how you feel, but sometimes...schadenfreude. Ok, that word is a bit harsh for this, but for me it perfectly describes how I feel about how Karma comes back to bit people, or companies, in the butt. They knew this could happen but chose to ignore it. So...Karma.

Better to be busy than the alternative.

Everyone could see this coming a mile off, right?

Of course they did. The only people who can't see it are the managers and those who are in charge.

Obergruppenführer
It's kinda strange...I've looked up so many worda/terms I never thought I would. When I looked this up, it said it was the highest commissioned rank in the SS and equivalent to a 3 star general (or for you crazy squids...a vice admiral.) Then I looked up Heydrich(I think) and.it said he was a 4 star. Wait! What? If Obergruppenführer is 3 star and highest...how exactly do we get a 4 star?

You never should have had to work while on medical leave. My thoughts anyways.
Truth. Problem is so many higher ups live to work instead of work to live and think everyone should. I was looking at a job at google until I found out they're one of the worst. Why do they have free food and recreation and beds at the office...because they encourage/want/expect people to essentially live there.

that work thing. Always getting in the way of things.
Ain't that the truth.

uh yep....ripped off. The life of a salaried person
I once had a boss when I was going on vacation ask me if they could call if anything "came up". We were going to Disney resort at Hilton Head. I told him no...I'll either be in the pool or the ocean and phone doesn't work well in either place.

Better to be busy than the alternative.
Not sure...the chief seems to be doing okay with the alternative and I'm looking forward to not having to commute every day.

Of course they did. The only people who can't see it are the managers and those who are in charge
Problem is when people are compensated or incentivized for saving money and the bean counters get involved in running the business instead of good business running it. Doesn't matter if they screw over thousands of people, if they make their balance sheet look better, they get more. I've said for years...aside from a 2020 happening, when people are laid off, it's due to mis-management. Some can ask well what about when the industry goes away/dies. Sure that has an impact, but there are many examples where companies (good managers) modified their business model to adapt. The managers that don't care about their people just ride the gravy train until the end of the line and many have their golden parachute as well as take over another company.

Okay. I'll get off my soapbox.

FB is weird and the US is so polarised at the moment, politics infiltrates everything. The amount of people I've snoozed over the last few months is amazing.

Sort of. There's a fine line between being busy and at the centre of things, until you ask what the other 5 people are doing in the department apart from doing their hours and hittin' the showers.

If you had kept up with the Keto, would they throw packets of butter at ya? I think in these times this could be accommodated. What about Gluten free people? Do they do a GF tossing option?

Very much this. Over here it's like we've gone back to the 70s. I don't think it ever really changed. It just became less socially acceptable during the 90s. This however, has receded.
Doesn't matter if they screw over thousands of people, if they make their balance sheet look better, they get more. I've said for years...aside from a 2020 happening, when people are laid off, it's due to mis-management. Some can ask well what about when the industry goes away/dies. I think your right mate, there is a ton of mis management and short sightedness, but I also think that there has been a race to the bottom on price, and therefore the only way to survive is to cut cost. As Westerners (in a global sense) we have been part of this with the rise of Amazon and China from a manufacturing sense, who pay no tax or benefit from various nefarious schemes and have buying power or supply chains that others cannot get near, so those guys fall away, as on-one wants to pay more than they have to. And in some, the market just disappears. Would Apple have let Blockbuster into the Digital market, as iTunes and Video basically destroyed the Physical market, so there was literally no demand for the product. You could say they could have evolved or developed (maybe like Kodak should have) but the new markets are often driven by proprietary devices to disrupt. The only ones who have a chance is those that own content, like the Disney model. Maybe.

Well that got a bit hefty, who thinks Jasmine is pretty?
Have a great afternoon chaps.

They do because they get incentives if their company/department does well. Sad that it happens that way. I've been lucky to have worked with/for great people.

Ain't that the truth.

:thumbsup2

I once had a boss when I was going on vacation ask me if they could call if anything "came up". We were going to Disney resort at Hilton Head. I told him no...I'll either be in the pool or the ocean and phone doesn't work well in either place.

I would have answered no as well. You call me on my vacation, I get to tack on an extra day. I know, that won't go over with the bosses, but it'd be nice if it did, right?

Not sure...the chief seems to be doing okay with the alternative and I'm looking forward to not having to commute every day.

Not having a job for most of last year, I'd rather be busy at work than the alternative. I'd be ok with not having a commute as long as I was ready for retirement. Unfortunately my 401K took a huge hit a few years ago, and I have a 7 year old I have to get into college, so I'm not reting anytime soon. I do, however, have a 3 minute commute, so close enough.

Okay. I'll get off my soapbox.

And this was this place I was talking about. All the supervisors and managers get bonuses when they hit their numbers each month...but that bonus, I noticed, never trickled down to the working man/woman. It was always mandatory to work the last weekend of the month so we could make end of month numbers. The end of the year? Mandatory overtime every day starting in October, and I'm taking a minimum of an hour each day, plus weekends. While that's good for the paycheck, it began to wear on you after a while. Not having a job for most of last year I didn't mind it so much, but I began to feel the effects after a while. And it was the supervisors/managers who benefited if we hit year end numbers.

Yeah, just about any day at the yoga studio. View attachment 520197

Morning Muchachos, from a sunny and temperate London. 2 more calls, 10 more emails, and I'm on my way to Cornwall. We will arrive late tonight, got a couple of calls tomorrow, and then off for a week.

Hope you have fun in Cornwall. I've always wanted to visit.

FB is weird and the US is so polarised at the moment, politics infiltrates everything. The amount of people I've snoozed over the last few months is amazing.

Yeah, politics infiltrates everything, but thankfully some of the groups I belong to do a good job of keeping it out of the groups.

Sort of. There's a fine line between being busy and at the centre of things, until you ask what the other 5 people are doing in the department apart from doing their hours and hittin' the showers.

I get that, and I probably should have said that I was coming at it from the perspective of not having a job for most of last year. I'd rather be busy at work than not having job...sorry, should have been a bit more specific. I'd be irritated if I was overly busy and the next person over in my dept. wasn't work.

If thats what we are calling Birthday and Anniversaries, then sure....

😆 :teeth:

Morning all, beautiful morning here, very comfortable. Another soccer game last night and our 3rd loss in a row. We are snake bit right now, probably had 70% pf the possession last night, couple of out right misses and two sure goals cleared off the line. Otherwise a good run and the beer was cold after the game.

For two weeks. Yeah, I am on day shift this time. So I won't feel quite so much like a zombie. But I'll have to attend meetings. Pros and Cons...

Zoom? If so, record a video of yourself nodding and paying attention. Set it as your background and it will keep looping and you can walk away.

Double camel toe is never a good look.

Better than a moose knuckle
.

Interesting. Can you give me an example?
Not without getting banned from the boards...
Let's say it's most clearly related to the myriad verities of intolerance.

I've had truly stunning things said to me by folks who assumed that either my appearance, or my profession, or my neighborhood, or my child's school district was an indication that I'd be in agreement with their preferences. This goes back decades and has only become more pronounced, common and frankly more brazen over time. The region where I live is adept and implementing policies, regulation and even legislation that is specifically designed to say one thing, but actually disadvantage specific types of individuals. Is this unique to here? No it's not and that amount of commonality is what's strongly troubling me.

You never should have had to work while on medical leave. My thoughts anyways.
My thoughts as well.
But my thoughts weren't allowed to be part of the calculus.

Truth. Problem is so many higher ups live to work instead of work to live and think everyone should.
Yeah, that right there is pretty much the crux of the biscuit.
If you don't live that way, you don't advance.

I once had a boss when I was going on vacation ask me if they could call if anything "came up". We were going to Disney resort at Hilton Head. I told him no...I'll either be in the pool or the ocean and phone doesn't work well in either place.
If I travel, I have to take my gear with me and be reachable.
I could refuse, but the laws here state that one can can have their employment terminated at any time and for any reason (or for no reason at all), so picking a fight with your employer is hazardous in nearly all respects.

I do say that I'll be in places where the time it will take me to respond might be prohibitive and/or force me to access the system via public networks and that fairly well calms them down. that said, I've actually been called while I was on vacation an numerous occasions, including during trips to Disney (and no, I don't get comp days added on for such things either).

I'll get off my soapbox.
Naaa, pontificate away.
We'll just ignore you if we don't like it ;)

(Just as I expect y'all to do me the same. Fair's fair...)

Very much this. Over here it's like we've gone back to the 70s. I don't think it ever really changed. It just became less socially acceptable during the 90s. This however, has receded.

A much more succinct explanation of the issue...

Well that got a bit hefty, who thinks Jasmine is pretty?
Well, I'll certainly raise a glass in agreement on that one.

(and then quickly empty it and ask for a refill :drinking1 )

Orrrrrrr...
They don't learn at all, because it's still better for the balance sheet (and more importantly for the stock dividends and executive compensation packages) to hire the minimum possible number of newer, younger, less experienced and cheaper replacements and then just tell everyone else up and down the chain that depended on those resources to suck it up and find new ways to increase efficiency (or they may find themselves being replaced as well).

Well, yes. That's also one of the outcomes.

I read a novel a while back that had a great line in it: "When they need you, they talk about things like loyalty, honor and duty. When you need them, they talk about budgets."

Also helps that hockey is on all afternoon and evening these days.

I have to admit, I've really loved the whole August Madness hockey tournament.

Time to check out again for awhile. Someone let me know when common sense and decency return. I miss the America I grew up in.

Hang in there. Hopefully better days are ahead.

Morning all. FIL is feeling better so we went to Lambert's Cafe, home of the throwed rolls, yesterday and the keto train crashed hard. Rolls and all you can eat fried okra for me. Google the restaurant if you want, but they literally throw rolls to you.

I've always wanted to try that place. Just never been in the right vicinity.

Next story:

The moral is: people suck.

O Captains, My Captains

Yes?

There's no rational dialogue.

I usually check FB a couple times a day, but I have nearly given up on it lately.
Like you, I stick to my non-political interest groups, and avoid the comment section as much as possible.

All of this is true. I got on FB several years ago in order to keep in touch with friends and family, see what was going on in their lives. And also to re-connect with old friends with whom I'd lost touch. I feel like it no longer serves that purpose. Instead of keeping up with friends, all I see are political rants, memes, advertisements, and misinformation.

The only fun part is when there's a game on and a few of us hang out in a group commenting like a virtual sports bar.

FB is weird and the US is so polarised at the moment, politics infiltrates everything. The amount of people I've snoozed over the last few months is amazing.

Me too. I look at some of my friends in stunned disbelief, like "I thought you were a normal and clear-headed, rational person. What happened?"

I once had a boss when I was going on vacation ask me if they could call if anything "came up". We were going to Disney resort at Hilton Head. I told him no...I'll either be in the pool or the ocean and phone doesn't work well in either place.

To their credit, my bosses have conceded the point when I have said that if I'm so important that I can't disappear for 2 weeks without everything falling apart, then I clearly need to be paid a lot more.

If you had kept up with the Keto, would they throw packets of butter at ya? I think in these times this could be accommodated. What about Gluten free people? Do they do a GF tossing option?
The public needs to know.

:rotfl2: They throw gluten-free rolls at you, obviously. 4 people have been hospitalized as a result.

Morning all. 160th Groundhog day?

And I guess we understand why our parents used to say I remember when or lamenting how things had changed.

Really wish it was like a video game and we could just press the reset button.

Change isn't always bad. It's just terrifying to me that people are looking to the government as their salvation while tattling on their neighbors.

Problem is that 400 scientists say this and 400 scientists say the opposite, so Herbie goes with the scientist the talking media heads recommend or the ones that fit the political narrative. So many have lost the ability to critically think.

Not to sound too dystopian, but I cant see a way out either. There's no rational dialogue.

::yes:: Then considering when our trillion$ of overspending explodes, who knows what will happen. It's popular in America to think FDR got America out of the Depression. Bernanke indicated that FDR took the wrong actions, leaving us in the Depression longer, which was why he took different actions during the Recession. This time economic scientist disagree. Which one should Herbie pick?

Flex hours?
What madness is this?
It almost sounds like a form of compensation, which would certainly be attacked as an abomination down this way

But, it cuts both ways. Flex off that overtime, but no reduction in current work. So, now that you have flexed that time off, work double extra hard to catch up and no extra compensation.

I get how you feel, but sometimes...schadenfreude. Ok, that word is a bit harsh for this, but for me it perfectly describes how I feel about how Karma comes back to bit people, or companies, in the butt. They knew this could happen but chose to ignore it. So...Karma.

I hadn't heard that term in a while. I didn't go there, but interesting.

It's the eerie thought of what could have been. While it's a far lesser degree, I can see the similarities of our current civil unrest with encouraging censorship, tattling on neighbors, destroying property, and cries to defund the police.

Yeah, just about any day at the yoga studio. View attachment 520197

You go the yoga studio? Brilliant. Why haven't you been posting pictures? :lmao:

Maybe.

I'd go a step further and say greed or avarice is the problem. I certainly have no problems with making profits. It's that greed that decided to use slave labor in other countries to pad the bottom line. Politically, it's institutionalizing avarice at the expense of national security. Why would any country move critical infrastructure or parts of the supply chain to another country for profit? Friedman never included that in his theories.
