"Hi, I have the flu. It'll probably take out everyone in the office, but I'll come in."

:sad2:
Welcome to the U.S.

Case and point...
A couple years ago, I had to have surgery to open up several of the vertebra in my neck to keep them from actually strangling my spinal cord (long story). Two weeks later and while I was officially written out on medical leave, I was still expected to take care of the month-end data and reporting processes. In their defense, they did at least allow me to do said work from home.

True Story.

Wow. :sad2:

Morning, Gents! Well, we made it to Wednesday and this is when we begin our downhill slide. I had something interesting happen yesterday, and it was more of a, uh, karma situation where something came back to bit them in the butt. Bill, the stockroom lead at the last place I worked at, texted me yesterday to tell me that he put in this two week notice. I asked him why, and he told me, "I'm tired of doing the job of two people, and they're not going to hand out raises this year." This all doesn't surprise me one bit. They've lost so many people from that company and they refuse to hire replacements, so everyone is left to do more with less help. They had a chance to hire me back in December of last year, but didn't. Then they had two other chances, and didn't. They finally made me an offer, but I had another offer right around the same time, two actually, the Post Office and the law firm position. I was told that they weren't going to put a second person in the stockroom, big mistake, and that Bill will have to make due. Well, now they're going to have no one in the stockroom unless they can find a replacement before he leaves. Karma. I really liked working there, despite my complaints, but the company is poorly run. Well, now they're going to have to deal with losing someone with his knowledge...I wish them the best. Well, gents, have a good day and we'll chat on the other side.

After two weeks?! That's insane! You should have been on medical leave right from the beginning!

You have me convinced that you work for Voldemort.

I've seen this a lot...sometimes it seems like the only way workplaces learn to appreciate their employees or how to properly run things is for them to lose all of their good people.

Shhhh...you must not speak his name. 😆

Well that's happening now with this place. They've lost a lot of good people, and kept people that should have been let go. I only wish them the best because there's a lot of good people that work there.

Eh...
He'd never even rise above middle-management down here.

Orrrrrrr...
They don't learn at all, because it's still better for the balance sheet (and more importantly for the stock dividends and executive compensation packages) to hire the minimum possible number of newer, younger, less experienced and cheaper replacements and then just tell everyone else up and down the chain that depended on those resources to suck it up and find new ways to increase efficiency (or they may find themselves being replaced as well).

Well, I'm back at work. Boo...Hiss...
But you know, it pays those pesky bills that keep showing up, so it's all good.

Oh, we'll be needin' pictures to back this one up.
So the story of my afternoon in the backyard:
Forecast called for mainly sun with showers possible.
Ended up being overcast all afternoon, cool, with more rain than expected.
Cat was ticked off she couldn't get outside, so was sulking asleep on the couch.
I did my drinking in the family room.
I did finish a bottle, but I didn't mention there was only 4 drinks left in it (it's funnier without mentioning that)
It was still a fairly relaxing and enjoyable afternoon.
Also helps that hockey is on all afternoon and evening these days.

OK, the first thing I thought was "Camel Toe Day"?
But hey, whatever works...

Just popping in for a moment. I had been doing well avoiding social media and news and my mental health was improving. I stuck my toe back in the waters today and it was a mistake. Orwell was right, some animals are more equal than others. Congrats to those deserving and bacon to all, deserving or not.

Time to complete my daily required check in for the overlords on my health. Not that it really matters, it is just a way for them to cover their alien swirling saucers should something come up. I'm just waiting for the day the tell us all we need to be tested for COVID-19. So if we test negative, do we test again the next day, and the next, and the next until we test positive? The lack of common sense in the Ivory Tower never ceases to amaze me.

Time to check out again for awhile. Someone let me know when common sense and decency return. I miss the America I grew up in.

Morning all. FIL is feeling better so we went to Lambert's Cafe, home of the throwed rolls, yesterday and the keto train crashed hard. Rolls and all you can eat fried okra for me. Google the restaurant if you want, but they literally throw rolls to you.

Hay Y'all...
Well, I get to work from home for a little while.
We have to fill out a health questionnaire every morning to be allowed in the office and I've been feeling a bit off since about Friday and couldn't say "no" to everything on the list. So now I've got a COVID test scheduled for this morning and I have to stay home and work until we get the results back. Honestly, I don't think that's what's wrong. But then again, it will be good to rule it out and my physician won't see me until afterword either,

Most employers have that form. Hope you feel better and you test negative.

Yeah that doesn’t pass the smell test. Throughout all this, my opinion has been somewhere in the middle, I think. But decisions like that start to move my needle.
Yesterday my province announced a couple things. One, that mask use will be mandatory in all public indoor spaces as of this Monday. Two, that schools are opening in September at full capacity, with masks worn in hallways but not classrooms. I’m not getting into the mask effectiveness debate, but our government is saying it’s safe for kids to be in a classroom with 30 students and no mask, yet it’s not safe to be in a Walmart where you can distance yourself farther from people. It has to be one way or the other.
It’s these inconsistencies in policy that are starting to tick me off.

I agree with you that the inconsistencies and perhaps the hypocracy undermine their credibility.

I'm sorry... what???
"Hi, I have the flu. It'll probably take out everyone in the office, but I'll come in."

:sad2:

I'll change that to:
Me: "I have the flu, and will probably take out the office".
Employer: "Come in anyway".

That's my experience with most of my employers/ bosses.

::yes::

My turn.

25 years ago, my senior year at college, I broke my arm at UPS (work accident), and had surgery that night with 2 plates and 10 screws to keep it together. The next day, I called the Dean of the Department and Professor to ask for an exception for the final exam scheduled the following day, he said I could just fail the class answer, re-take it, and try to graduate in the fall. I took the final on pain meds, with my right arm in a splint/ wrap, the hand I write with, and got a C in the class to graduate.

Next story:
When my wife was dx with pneumonia and our girls were in day care, my boss gave me 1 day of sick leave, and said I was fired if I didn't come show up the next day because there was a presentation, & he was a big idiot that couldn't fill in for me.

I always hate to hear that those type of poor management decisions effect others. Sounds like you made the right call.

I've seen this a lot...sometimes it seems like the only way workplaces learn to appreciate their employees or how to properly run things is for them to lose all of their good people.

I'll let you know when I feel appreciated. Maybe I just picked two bad places to work.

Salaried "associate" (they don't call us employees) ,so...

Nope.

::yes: Work all the overtime that is needed without the pay for the job. Are you sure you're not in my same department?

We are required to keep a sheet to keep up with our work hours to show that we are working enough hours. When they go over 40, there is no extra pay and I have to "prove" overtime to flex off the hours.

OK, the first thing I thought was "Camel Toe Day"?
But hey, whatever works...

And second thing you thought was I'm married, so I'm not going to see that anytime soon. :lmao:

::yes:: :sad2:

I guess that's what makes this so challenging. We've had it so much better.
And I guess we understand why our parents used to say I remember when or lamenting how things had changed.

Really wish it was like a video game and we could just press the reset button.
