DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Sorry I meant Rob (@Zmack ) that is here in NB near me. I know he started some treatments again but I don't remember hearing from him for a bit. Maybe I just missed him posting.
Yeah, I think you're right mate, haven't seen him in a while. Hopefully he's doing OK.
I'm all for this notion, but how does that work.
The council, through council tax pays for all upkeep of roads, public areas, police, trash removal, basically the day to day stuff etc. This is levied on the value of your house which is reviewed every 4 years. You apply to the planning department if you wish to make a structural change to your house, which does not include sheds, smokers, conservatories, it's generally for full extensions to your house. Neighbours can object to these plans if it materially affects them or their light or any party wall agreement. Apart from that, you're pretty much free to do as you will. An Englishmans home is his castle, and all that.
There are obviously public bye laws you have abide by, to protect things like common drainage, but its kind of a "negative freedom" thing, in that as long as you are not hurting anyone or doing damage, have at it. To be fair, our housing situation is completely different from yours in that gated developments are not really a thing over here or housing associations. We do however have "listing laws" where properties over a certain age or with historical importance are subject to more stringent rules, but then people who are buying into that are buying into that heritage.

Morning folks.
Not sure what the day will bring yet.

or for pkondz, happy whatever crazy work week day this is.
Yesterday evening was my Friday. So today's my Saturday.
Or live where snow plowing isn't needed. Just sayin!
HEY!

Well...

yeah.
I have to have my leave balance verified, because the original pay stub from 15 years ago might be a forgery.
What???
I tried the Chippendales once. I made a lot of money as the women paid me to put my clothes back on and leave the stage.
I thought it was when you flipped them on their back and they put their legs in the ready position.
Depends on if they're good roaches or bad.

This got to be longer then I anticipated.
I'd recommend ignoring it.

Property taxes, for the most part, pay for all that stuff around here.

OK, I get what y'all are on about.
You're talking about infrastructure and not the notion of controlling property usage beyond what's covered by general zoning.

On the infrastructure bit of it we do the same things actually. Most of those kind of general services are done the same way, depending on whether you live in a municipality or outside of city limits. We'er just off the township's boundaries, so we don't pay them any tax, but we also don't get any of their services. Fair enough. We rely on the services of the county which being a larger entity has to do some things differently. The bulk of the taxes paid to them go toward schools and then to shared infrastructure. Trash and recycling is really the only thing that's different, in that we're provided collection centers but are required to do our own hauling or hire a private trash collection agency. I've done my own hauling for years and don't mind it. What's different with the new property is that we have a private company do the pick up and it's part of the HOA dues. That's actually rather unusual. The rest of the things they do - grounds maintenance, looking after the swimming pool - That's more common. Our monthly dues are not that outrageous either, so it's all good.

It's the bit where the group want's to exercise control over how property is used that I was really on about. Mark made good points and so did Doc for that matter. In general, most HOA's are relatively benign, but you do need to consider what unique restrictions might be applied in a specific neighborhood before buying into that area. Our's has a few restrictions I was unaware of (and which aren't all that common, honestly), but those probably wouldn't have kept me from moving here. And in general - except for the bit about weeds - they haven't been overly hard to deal with. But lord help you if you get into one where a "Cynthia" has wormed their weigh into a position on the board..

OK, y'all did remember to not read that mess back there, Right?

That's all controlled by by-laws here. You can't just build what you want on a piece of property and in cities specifically it would cover things like property upkeep. Nobody will tell you can't paint your house a certain colour or change your fixtures though.

Keep him in your prayers. I texted him and this last round of treatments has been rough. I think essentially, the dis is low on priority list. I understand, respect and support that.

He just popped up on Group Me. He finished his latest treatments last week and thinks he'll be back to normal in a week or so.

Hey guys, did I miss anything important, I'm sure I did. :lmao::lmao::lmao: Finished treatments last week, starting to get back to feeling normal again 🤪, hope to be around more often now that I can stay awake.

Good to hear from you. I was about to put on my mask, drive down to and starting to knock on doors looking for you.

Great to hear from you.
I hope you are able to get back to normal soon.
Not that I’m sure what normal is anymore....

That would not take to long Darcy, it's a small town

Thanks Jeff, I hope thing get better for you too.

Good news for your son. My dd has returned to consider the welding program. She even applied at a tractor supply store and had an interview.

Hope her interview went well. Is that the youngest or has your eldest reconsidered her career choice? I wish my DD would think about trade school but it doesn't look like it. At this point I think I will be happy if she has something resembling a normal school year. Basketball practice started but I'm not sure how it will work out. The County School is still considering on-line instruction only so that means we might pick up a few students, primarily basketball players.

Praying for a successful outcome. They haven't kicked us off of here yet (other than that messy business about the Thread That Shall Not Be Named) so get the rest you need and pop in when you feel like it. I imagine we will still be here.

Evening, Gents! Hope everyone had a good day, I had so-so day. Been in another one of my moods lately, but was able to pull out of it by the afternoon. It's also been pretty busy at work lately so the days have been flying by. Otherwise, not much to report at work. I got home tonight from work and my wife greets me and says, "We need to have a serious talk tonight. What do you want for dinner?" And I'm like, "Whoa! Stop! Wait! What?! " FORGET DINNER! WHAT'S THIS SERIOUS TALK WE NEED TO HAVE?! (to myself I'm thinking) "Crap! What did I do? Did she find something she shouldn't have?" Not that I'm hiding anything, mind you. 😇 So, she tells me that since ou....wait. Stop. I should start this off...no, I NEED to start this off by saying that life just keeps getting better. 😆 🤪 So, she tells me that our oven is now toast. Kind of figured that out when it tried to blow us up. Well, it wasn't a huge explosion, but still....war stories, right? Basically, we turned the oven on the other night to cook dinner, pilot light never came on to light the oven, so the gas built up inside the oven. So when the pilot light did come on, it lit off the gas that had built up. Thankfully nothing major happened, but that could have been a serious problem if it had been bigger. Anyways, the oven is now in permanent slumber and will no longer be used. The microwave sounds like a jet engine when being used, and the portable dishwasher leaks when used because a wheel broke off a couple of years ago and thus leans to one side, a minor inconvenience I deal with. All this I knew. What I didn't know was is that my in-laws have decided to help us out and pay for all new appliances. I was thinking of a new stove and microwave, but sure, let's throw in a new built-in dishwasher and fridge (one with water and ice). Right now there's a really good deal going right now with a local place, and my in-laws know the owners and have a good relationship with them. The only thing is, we have to pay for instillation, which I have no problem with. That's wonderful! Great! No problem. Problem! There's no space to put a built in dishwasher. This means we're going to move the fridge. The oven will move over to where the fridge use to sit, the dishwasher will go where the oven use to sit so it can be closer to the sink. Great! Good idea! But wait, there's more! Talked to a friend about this, who's a plumber, and he said, "Steve, there's so much more involved than just moving a few appliances. You're going to have pull a permit since it involves gas, create an opening for the dishwasher and install a vent for the gas stove." To which I replied, "So basically, Mr. Plumber friend, we're going to have to redo the whole kitchen?" His reply, "Yep." *heavy sigh* This went from getting one new appliance, the stove, to four and redoing the whole kitchen and I have no idea if I'm going to have a job at the end of the month. I just want to cry...or get drunk...or both. Both. I'll do both. I have a full bottle of Grand Marnier around here some where. There better be a really big and bright light at the end of this tunnel I'm in because I'm getting tired of this. Man, lately I just seem to be full of, well, not good news, aren't I? It's actually kind of funny when you think about it. I am laughing about it because this is now a comedy of errors. Well, sorry for the vent. And I know, this is long...sorry. Have fun, gents!

TTFN

You told her not to shop... at a shoe store... and she listened???? Teach us your ways, oh wise one! :worship:

Well, I had a couple of things going for me: 1) She had hurt her knee at work and has to wear a knee brace :crutches:, thus she can't run...and I stayed out of arms reach. 2) I was driving and told her that when I was ready to go, we were leaving and I wasn't waiting around for her. 3) My plan of staying out of arms reach crumbled when we got back in my car, so I promised to stop off for some homemade ice cream if she didn't linger for shoes. Actually, I was going to stop off anyways because I like the ice cream where we went, but I wasn't going to tell her that. 😆

When we built our house (no HOA) we had a knock on the door shortly after we moved in and were getting the landscaping done. The company had dumped a load of gravel on the side of the street (no where else for it) and had marked it with cones. Some busy-body came to my door and said he was the "president of the area association" or something like that. Told me I needed to move the gravel. I said "Uh, huh. Sure." And then closed the door on him and forgot it. I didn't sign any agreements with him or any association. He's lucky I didn't tell him to get the hell off my property.

I would have told them where to stick it.

Morning fellas from a sunny but changeable mother country. The boy is hanging about waiting for an upgrade on his favourite game. We gave him a treat and said we would suspend school work for today. His current download estimate is 19hrs, so he should get to play around 2am. So now he's walking about like someone nicked the jam out of his doughnut. Happy Days. We will look back on this time of Lockdown where we spent time with our kids with fondness. I think.

19 hours?! He could have done some school work during that time frame.

Anyone know what day it is?

Heat warning here for the last few days of Spring, temps will be in the mid to high 90s F for the next few days. Should make for some pleasant sleeping temps for the next few nights.....not!

WE finally made to the upper 80's here on Cape Cod today...didn't think we'd ever make it.

The good news is DS finally got word he will go to MEPS in Knoxville next week to see if he is healthy enough for the military. His aptitude scores were very good so it is just the physical stuff now. The challenge is we are having a spike in COVID-19 in the county so he needs to stay healthy long enough to get there and get approved. I'm not sure who is more impatient, him or me.

Praying that he's healthy enough to get in.

Should start at the end of June.
I was thinking there may be another job before that but it seems like that’s gone belly up.
Going to be slim pickings I think over the next while.
I’m enjoying the time off in the summer. I won’t enjoy my bank balance in another month or two.
Can’t have it both ways I guess.

That's awesome, man! So happy for you.

I don't think those words have ever been used together like that.

On a rare occasion does that happen...almost like seeing the Lochness monster and Bigfoot on the same night.

Yeah. It all started because some developer wanted to make sure they could sell every house for top dollar. They hired a lawyer to draft up the covenents (AKA third reich laws). People were dumb enough (or desperate) and signed them. Once the precident was established, it spread faster than thin jelly on hot toast. It's done witg the premise of preserving values, but given how much they cost, it's just another layer of someone with their hand in your pocket telling you what to do and expecting you to thank them for it. It's very difficult to find a house in Orlando that doesn't have one. Glad I was able.

Okay...deep breaths....deep breaths. Despise HOAs.

EDIT:
Was just thinking about this after I posted.
I think it stems from when I was stationed in Vegas and lived on base. Kept getting written up for my grass looking like crap. Had to reseed it 4 times in 2 years and we had restrictions on when we could water (which is why it looked like crap to begin with)
I was d*mned if I do and d*mned if I don't.

There's a reason I don't like HOA's, and it's because of the power tripping people that get into those boards. I've seen too many stories on the news where property owners are locked out of meetings because they disagree with those on the board. Nope! Not for me.

Afternoon Dads! Just stopped by to say hey as work has been a mutha this week. Have a long 5 day weekend starting tomorrow but not sure where I'm going or what I'm doing just yet. DD & SIL are still waiting for SIL military leave to either be denied or approved as they want to come home for a week or so - their flight is tomorrow morning. Speaking of flights, our flight to go see them is also tomorrow morning.............. So you get the picture, somebody is cancelling a flight and unpacking tonight.

If I have missed anyone's struggles pixie dust and thoughts are with you. For those with successes, congrats and bourbon, bacon, Mickey Bars, health and a safe and happy family - cheers!

Welcome back! Glad all is well, my friend.

Morning all. Retirement packet #1 almost completed. I have to have my leave balance verified, because the original pay stub from 15 years ago might be a forgery. Good news, it is verified in the computer system. Bad news is that they have to use the computer system to handwrite the information on a paper form, scan form, email me the form, and I can print and fax the form to the right office. They won't be able to get to that until next week. And, still waiting for packet #2.

They have to use the computer system to hand write the information on a paper form... Wha?!

I tried the Chippendales once. I made a lot of money as the women paid me to put my clothes back on and leave the stage.

That would be me! 😁

I don't know your house or your wife, but if it were me, I'd keep major appliances in original location and deal with having to do dishes by hand, getting a new portable dishwasher or finding a new wheel for the existing one. I think it's amazing your inlaws are willing/able to help, but re-doing the entire kitchen is, IMHO, not a good idea. Unless you can get one of those TV shows to come in and do it for free.

I understand @Captain_Oblivious is happy with his HOA, but I guess it boils down to whether you'll get a good one like he has or get the Cynthia style. Granted Cynthia is a bit extreme, but I've had too many friends/co-workers who've told me horror stories. If it were possible to know BEFORE buying the home if you have a good or bad one, that could help, but not sure that's possible. Also, if the leadership changes, then I'm sure it could change from good to bad or bad to good. I think Mark has said this before. People suck. HOAs are made up of people. ;)

Morning All,

Another scorcher here, about 75F at 8 a.m. headed for 100 later today. The forecast has now been extended until Sunday. Now I like the heat but we need some rain really bad. Hopefully we get some soon.

I've been thinking about it since last night, and was up at 4 am thinking about it. We need an oven, but everything else is going to have to wait. We just can't afford it.

That's true. My older brother likes his, so know there are HOA's that are good.

What he said but I don't think those TV shows do it for free.

I wish those shows did that stuff for free.

Happy Friday. It is another beautiful day here.

You missed two more words that went with that phrase. It's almost a full time job filling out paperwork and finding documents to retire. Maybe they will want a blood donation too. I may send them a stool sample.

Hey guys, did I miss anything important, I'm sure I did. :lmao::lmao::lmao: Finished treatments last week, starting to get back to feeling normal again 🤪, hope to be around more often now that I can stay awake.

That's the oldest. She still has the lifeguard gig, but they are keeping her PRN instead of part time despite the # of hours she is working. I think she realizes she needs a more reliable source of income.

::yes:: It's like I'm on an episode of Faulty Towers. I know where these tv shows get their material now.
