DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Morning gents

A day of mowing the lawn ahead of me.

Possibly getting out for a walk after that if the mood and energy strikes.

Artemis Fowl? I’ve seen a bit of chatter on the FB page about it. Anyone else watch it?
I will have to be honest. I thought it was terrible and nearly turned it off halfway through. I found it confusing, I couldn’t follow the plot and really didn’t get invested in any of the characters. I generally like sci-fi/fantasy. I didn’t read the books and I suspect it is better on the page with more narrative.

Still snow on your lawn? Is that why it will take the day? ;)

We watched Artemis Fowl on Sunday. Overall, I liked it but I agree the books are probably better. It was definitely produced with the idea of being the first in a series.

Beginning the process of doing upgrades to the new home.
Starting out with the easy stuff...

That's the before and after (and yeah, there's a bird nest built into the old fixture). I've changed out a lot of lights in my day so it's a fairly effortless task. Well... except for getting permission to do the work that is. The new abode also comes with a fairly aggressive HOA, so that took far longer then the actual work.

Yeah it does, but I'm working on getting something. "Now where's that number to the Chipendales?"
It worked for Chris Farley....

Let's see... broke the 6 minute mark on 1K last Saturday, that was nice. Did 3K yesterday and might do 2K today.

"You still run?"

"Only when chased..."

A day of mowing the lawn ahead of me.
O joy...
I actually need to spend some time weeding, as I've been given notice by the HOA on the topic, but on the up side, I have permission to wait until it stops raining (I did say that they are fairly aggressive).

Hey, we have computers. Mine finally got Windows 98 up and running.
One of the two boxes on my desk at work is still running WinXP (and it's still more stable than the one that's running Win7)

It's just called a roach, as it hasn't had any..
:lmao:

Looks good.

I can't imagine having to ask permission to change the fixtures on my house.

Is that coffee for you or for me, Running Man?
We can share.
Ya think????

If only they could create something that stored and transmtted information electronically.
If only. Then maybe I'd have a job.
Sliderules and abacii are slow.

Gotta love government efficiency.
Isn't that an oxymoron?

A day? Just how big is your lawn????

Nit sure about the lawn, but looking at th3 distance between tire tracks, that's a big mower!

Cool. Just before EOL (+ 14 years). :woohoo:

It's just called a roach, as it hasn't had any..
I digress, now where was I?
Well played sir. You digressions are good.

Didn't know you moved. Congrats...

I think. If you have to deal with an HOA, maybe condolences instead. When we bought our houses, not having HOA (from the 3rd reich) was paramount.

One of the two boxes on my desk at work is still running WinXP (and it's still more stable than the one that's running Win7)
Because XP was probably the most stable and reliable they ever produced. I adamantly dislike windoze, but XP was at least useable.

Same as Darcy. We don't have HOA. How does that all work? What can they do if you tell them to shove it up their alien swirling saucer?
When you buy a home that has an HOA, the HOA is a legal entity and you have to sign (and pay dues) to buy your house. That is exactly why I've avaoided them...nobody should have the right to tell me what I can or can't do with MY (okay, mostly the bank's) house.

If you do not abide by their (often militant) rules, you can be taken to court and even lose your home. Supposedly, they maintain home value, but with some of the fees I've seen, they're more a money pit for the privilege of having them abuse you. Sorry, not sorry...#NOTAFAN

HOA = Home Owner's Association.
They're generally set up by the builder and then turned over to the residents of a particular neighborhood. One purpose for them is for everyone to chip into for the maintenance of common amenities (main entrance, street lamps, garbage pickup, pools and meeting facilities...). But the other "idea" behind them is to protect property values by ensuring that all the homes in the area are maintained to a specific standard. (They also suit a couple of major US personality traits, being that we assign a value to everything and we like to tell others what to do). Different regimes have different priorities. This one happens to have an Architecture Committee that must approve any and all changes to the exterior of any home in the neighborhood (from color to shrubbery). US law allows HOAs to place liens against the property of those owners who don't comply with the covenants, so picking a fight with them can be financially hazardous. We didn't have one with the considerably older property we used to own, but most neighborhoods build from the 80s onward have them. The house my girl wanted, happened to come with one, so now I have to play their reindeer games.

Thanks,
It's a mixed blessing to be sure.
I made an effort not to deal with HOAs in the past, but this time the house we wanted in the area we wanted it made accepting their terms a necessity. I'm not a fan of these truly ironic institutions either, to be sure. We're still trying to figure our just how militant this one is and so far, they've been more of an inconvenience then a problem. We'll see how it goes when I get around to rearranging the the back yard.

Ain't perfect, that's for certain. But it is still the standard used in most business situations, and a good deal of second party software depends on it. Thus the need to keep a few old boxes running old O/Ss (and I'm the keeper of everything old that no one else wants to deal with).

Has anyone seen the new commercial about HOAs?

Maybe (likely) only in the US, so I'll see if I can find online.

See if this works...

Well, when I say a day of it, I mean that’s all on my busy schedule. The joys of being on furlough...

After mowing I did muster up the energy to get out for another walk, this time in Bowring Park, the main park in our city. It had rained for a couple days so the river and waterfall were impressive. This picture will probably post sideways so tip your head again.
Really pleasant day for a walk. Sunny, 21C/70F with a nice breeze down in the valley.

You’re not far off, it wasn’t that long ago that I still had a mountain of snow since snowmageddon.
It was only in the last couple of weeks the huge mound of snow by the Walmart finally melted (it must have been 3 stories high)

I can remember that in Moncton a couple of years ago. The snow dump had a mountain that lasted until late May.

Steep upgrade from DOS.

Ham? It hasn't had any ham? Is that what you meant?
Remember to tack on a minute per mile every 10f over 70, that's par. Good luck bud
Huh! Did not know that. Did a quick 2K (quick for me, dead slow for you) before the heat of the day. Happy with that.
This time I desperately needed new shoes, so I had no choice. Besides, I told her she wasn't to shop and/or look for anything. As a result, we were in and out in a half-hour.
You told her not to shop... at a shoe store... and she listened???? Teach us your ways, oh wise one! :worship:

Wow.
When we built our house (no HOA) we had a knock on the door shortly after we moved in and were getting the landscaping done. The company had dumped a load of gravel on the side of the street (no where else for it) and had marked it with cones. Some busy-body came to my door and said he was the "president of the area association" or something like that. Told me I needed to move the gravel. I said "Uh, huh. Sure." And then closed the door on him and forgot it. I didn't sign any agreements with him or any association. He's lucky I didn't tell him to get the hell off my property.
This picture will probably post sideways so tip your head again.
Worth the tip! Nice!

Morning fellas from a sunny but changeable mother country. The boy is hanging about waiting for an upgrade on his favourite game. We gave him a treat and said we would suspend school work for today. His current download estimate is 19hrs, so he should get to play around 2am. So now he's walking about like someone nicked the jam out of his doughnut. Happy Days. We will look back on this time of Lockdown where we spent time with our kids with fondness. I think.

Many stores I know still run on AS400s...… and some of them take a billion a year.

Wowsers. In the Land of the Free? I kinda get it if you live in an apartment block, but in a detached house?
Cheers for the info, if I ever buy over there I'll watch out for it. And Cynthia can f right off.
Ham? It hasn't had any ham? Is that what you meant?
It certainly hasn't had a cheeky sausage, so it's all in the pork area.

If you fancy doing some spreadsheet work on the promise on me buying you a beer on an undefined date, let me know, I'll fill up your day in a NY minute. When does the work start that you were talking about last week?

Have a great day fellas.

Anyone know what day it is?

Heat warning here for the last few days of Spring, temps will be in the mid to high 90s F for the next few days. Should make for some pleasant sleeping temps for the next few nights.....not!

Have a great day all.

I take it this isn't for the console you were building the case for?

Maybe he could help with your spreadsheet work.

No, the Arcade Cab is all MAME 80's & 90s games so doesn't update unless I tell it to. I keep finding random games in there, like all the Ice Hockey, football and baseball. The one he is waiting for is a new Chapter in Fortnite, which is a MMOG game that all the kids are into. They change seasons every few months or so, and with 20 odd million around the planet doing the same thing, he's in a bit of a pinch. It's updated on the Xbox now, whereas he was waiting on his Nintendo Switch, so he's now as happy as a pig in the proverbial.
You gonna watch the Premier League today mate? Do you get it on your channels?
