DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
So, some bit of some good news. Spent all morning at work on my retirement plans. So, here's what I got. I have 286 months and need 300 to retire for early retirement. We have another 12 month contract, which leaves me short. I am however eligible to purchase a year of service. So, I requested a quote and we will go from there. Sure, I expect it to be in the $20K range. :scared1:

But, I'd be eligible for retirement almost right away, and then could go in June next year. It's certainly not what I planned to do, but I won't have to deal with the uncertainty any longer. And, if an election goes the wrong way, I can file the PWK and be retired in a month. Just have to wait for the mail and then decide from there.
Sounds like a possible out from all the uncertainty, hopefully the year buyback quote is doable for you. Less stress is always a great thing.

For 50 quid(ish) Lady K has signed off me going to see the Yankees Red Sox game at West Ham's stadium tomorrow. The scalpers are going to take a bath on this game, everyone left it alone and now tickets are at about £3 more than face value, which makes me happy as they are absolutely gouging everyone on the NFL London tickets. I'll buy a ticket tomorrow, I don't care if I'm up in the gods, Yankees/Sox is a bucket list game, but hopefully the prices will collapse tomorrow.
Harry Potter Studios in London on Sunday as a surprise for the kids, as well as a BBQ I have been let out of at 515 to get to the ball game, so a pretty packed weekend now.

DS has been sent to bed with a flea in his ear, according to the missus he's been a right d-bag all afternoon, so she told him his fortune and sent him to bed.
Happy families. :rolleyes1
Enjoy the game sounds like a fun time, always nice to cross things off the bucket list, then you can add more things.

So... if given the choice, would you rather buy the year and get out OR if you knew for certain that you'd have the job until your 300 months would you prefer that?
Hang in there.
Halfway, now.

Watch out for the one eyed monster in the garbage chute!
(No really, watch the movie, it's in there)
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: - Well played Sir! Have a good weekend.
I'm hoping to see TS4 this weekend too.
I'll be curious to get your reaction to the End Game re-release. I've read the extra end credits scene is not that good. Maybe not worth it?
We wanted to see End Game one more time in the theater anyway so this just pushed us to go ahead and do it.

Nice on the Yankees / Bo Sox! So today we have Jeff getting ready for Middle School pre-teen daughter and now a young man with a "Flea" in his ear - whatever that is. I am just soo sitting back enjoying reading these stories of family bliss :) Good luck to all of you.

Flea in the ear? Bravo 007. More English difficulty.

::yes:: Yes, some clarity.

Good News, Good News, Really Good News!!!

Thanks.

I'd rather work the 300 months. But, i'm not sure we get the opportunity.

Kind of like saying - would you rather have $1000 a month or roll the dice for $2000 a month or nothing. A bird in the hand.

A proper telling off.
His biggest thing is FOMO, so it was killing him that his little sister was downstairs and he had been sent to bed.
But we have a rule that we only tell them twice, then consequences occur.

Good luck getting through the rest of the shift mate

FOMO and fleas. Craziness. Just as crazy as enforcing rules. That's anti-American.

Okay, that's kinda what I thought you'd say. You said that you have a 12 month contract and future employment if the vote is favourable. How long do you have before you have to make the decision? Can you wait? I'm thinking the longer you can wait, the less time you'll have to buy and the cost goes down, no?

Morning boys, from a 31C London. Got my. Sox ticket, for about half of the face value. They were way overpriced to start with. The young un has woken up on the right side of the bed today, so hopefully the missus will keep her red cards in her pocket. We had to have a little chat this morning about not being a smart mouth. With the DS, not Lady K. I'm not that crazy.

Flea in the ear? Bravo 007. More English difficulty.
I'm just here the spread the Cockney gospel buddy, one phrase at a time. Good luck in your retirement shenanigans. Could you could work the extra months which you seem to be short or do you have to work the whole year, if you get offered it?
Silly goose, don’t you know carpet is out these days?
Not to be too morbid, but I'm pretty sure both the carpet and drapes will be pretty dusty right now.....
We wanted to see End Game one more time in the theater anyway so this just pushed us to go ahead and do it.
I think we will go in a week or so. It was a lot to take in the first time. Enjoy that mate.
Enjoy the game sounds like a fun time, always nice to cross things off the bucket list, then you can add more things.
Totally. The main sports things left are watching England abroad in a World Cup, an Milb game, a College Bowl game, and a Friday Night HS game in the South, probably Texas, Bears at Soldier field and the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl thing is in Motion. Can't see myself in Qatar for the next WC, so that seems to be coming the holy grail (cue the Monty Python Quotes) I should have gone when it was in France. Things like West Ham in the Champions League ain't ever gonna happen, so that's a few quid saved. The Lady K is pretty patient with stuff like this. I'm not down the pub all week like a lot of my mates, I don't play golf, watching live sports is my thing, so that's where some of my dough ends up.

So she is off to Junior High next year (I think some of you may call that Middle school). I survived one daughter going through it, I just hope I can survive the second.
She did very well with her report card. She struggled a little at the beginning of the year but really improved and had a good report in the end. That's all I can ask for.
In the US, with the exception of one grade, I think it's fairly consistent...
Age 5 - Kindergarten
1-6 Elementary school
7-8 Middle school (or Junior high)
9-12 High school

I've heard sometimes Junior high is 6-8, so that's the grade exception.

Right. That's it. I'm calling it. Work week over. Everyone out. Last man standing after a night of Poolside Iced Tea's at Beaches in the Grand Floridian gets to take Princess Leia home (again). And let me tell ya, if she yells at you "Into the garbage chute, flyboy" you better dive right in. Just make sure the walking carpet is out of your way.
Nice.

Or as Randall would say..."Good Job, Very good job".

Morning Boys from a cloudy Douglas NB. Nice to be home after another 4 time zone trip across the country. Few delays yesterday to make it an even better day, total time from leaving the hotel in Yellowknife to walking in the door at home was about 22 hours. Good times.

Going to check the office to make sure it is still there and start the long weekend. Probably nap and watch some soccer this afternoon.
22 hours makes for a long trip. Oy!

Personally after that many hours, checking the office would not be on my radar. Napping sounds good.

Watch out for the one eyed monster in the garbage chute!
(No really, watch the movie, it's in there)
Very nice addition!!!

I'm a bit confused...if you have 286 months and you buy a year, I count 298 months. That means you could retire in 2 months. Hoping the cost is doable. Hoping you can retire and convince the wife to move down here and then you could get something to supplement your retirement (since you don't want to retire yet).

DS has been sent to bed with a flea in his ear, according to the missus he's been a right d-bag all afternoon, so she told him his fortune and sent him to bed.
Had to look that one up. Glad I wasn't alone. I could figure out "told him his fortune" from context.

I'd rather work the 300 months. But, i'm not sure we get the opportunity.

If you are retired already, then the vote doesn't matter at that point? In other words, they can't take away the retirement after the fact, can they?
Given all the carp you've talked about, I think paying to get paid through retirement is worth it, but I'm guessing it will be a purely mathematical equation at that point.
Praying for you and your family.

Morning Guys.

A rainy morning here so far, looks like it could be this way for the long weekend. Oh well, just have to stay in and watch sports on the tube.

Looks like England vs USA in the World Cup semis this week. I'm going to throw my support to Dan and the Lionesses on this one. Jeff, maybe you should cheer for the USA???

True. It takes the minimum of 1 month to get the paperwork processed to retire. So, May 30 for a last day June 30, retire effective July 1.

How long does it take to buy the time? Minimum, once they mail out the amount. However, my contract is only good thru June 30. This year, it didn't get signed until after June 15. That's cutting it too close.

Silly goose, don’t you know carpet is out these days ?

Only in my dreams.

Avoid those red cards. My DW says she has some ideas for the Pickleball paddle - for my behavior. :scared1: I keep my head on a swivel while we play.

I was disappointed with live NFL game. The stadium experience was terrific, but the players were so far away, even with good seats. I do enjoy MLB game live though. Have fun at the game.

As for retirement, yes, I can keep working. 324 months of service (or 27 years) is needed for full retirement. 2 levels of early retirement at 312 and 300, which is a reduction in pay benefit. If I purchased the year and work 2 months, then I am eligible for the early retirement. I could continue working, which would just give me more money.

You are correct on all points. I've requested the quote and have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. I would be able to retire in Sept 2019. And, the legislation is just for those currently paying towards their retirement, not the ones receiving it. All of their attempts (and the one passed & overturned by KY Courts) set the effective Jan 1 or July 1. So, out by Sept saves me.

Also, I am allowed to add on unused sick time at the end for additional service credit. I have 6 months of unused sick time. If I waited until March 2020, that sick time would give me 26 years of service. But, that one would depend on a vote that wasn't effective Jan 1.

As for relocating to Florida, that is still going to be 3 years from now. My youngest is starting 10th grade, and DW believes it will hurt her education. I guess I may be able to move down earlier to start the transition.

Looks like England vs USA in the World Cup semis this week. I'm going to through my support to Dan and the Lionesses on this one. Jeff, maybe you should cheer for the USA???

Just like the Canaudauians to flip on the USA. :furious:

Thanks for the translation.

Silly goose, don’t you know carpet is out these days ?

I don't know what the latest fashion is. It has been too long since I checked.

In the US, with the exception of one grade, I think it's fairly consistent...
Age 5 - Kindergarten
1-6 Elementary school
7-8 Middle school (or Junior high)
9-12 High school

I went to Kindergarten at 4
Elementary was 1-4
Middle school 5-6
Jr. High 7-8
Sr. High 9-12

It just worked out that way because we had two K-4 schools in the district which were full, the Middle school was in the old high school that my dad graduated from, and then the Jr and Sr High were in the new school which is ancient.

Morning, gents...

Silly goose, don’t you know carpet is out these days ?
That's very true. Now those spaces are being filled with hard wood.
How long does it take to buy the time? Minimum, once they mail out the amount. However, my contract is only good thru June 30. This year, it didn't get signed until after June 15. That's cutting it too close.
Ohhh.. okay. So you don't have another 12 months.

Interesting...I stand corrected.
Not really. Your version is just as correct. I think it is dependent on the local school board. My cousins in an adjacent school district never had a middle school and my wife who went to a different but still adjacent district had elementary K-3, Middle School 4-6, then junior and senior high. Three different arrangements in adjacent school districts.
