DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Have worked for the same company/industry 39 years (yeah, I'm actually that stupid), but the last remaining part of the business was sold back at the beginning of the year. Of course, when new overlords show up, they immediately start looking for any perceived redundancies that they can be shed of, and I happen to be amongst the cogs that they see as nothing more than duplication. I was scheduled to be put down back in March, but they realized that folks were going to be needed for a while to handle "legacy" processing until they can install their own systems into their newly acquired prize. So... I was "extended" until September. Now they've realized that it's all more complicated then they thought so another temporary reprieve was issued and my DOE is now set for the end of the year (yet in the mean time they also greaty expanded my work load to compensate for those folk that went ahead and intelligently retired last month). The people that I do work for - and who have already been hired on by the new company - very much want to keep me, but they don't run the show and don't get final say. As such, I'm still hanging out down here in purgatory awaiting a final judgment. It's that not knowing that makes everything difficult to deal with.

Any luck at all with putting feelers out for other jobs?

Darcy will sponsor you to become Canadian, which takes care of the insurance. :lmao:

:rotfl2:

Since it was near lunch time, I went to a bar, ordered a beer 🍻, or two, three....and some lunch and enjoyed myself. One thing I love doing is people watching in airports. I also felt real good for the next leg of my trip. :teeth:

...and spent the entire flight in the airplane lavatory...

Got a scratch lottery ticket and won.... $1!
What should I do with my winnings? (The ticket, not the bottle. I've got that one figured out.)

Save the dollar and sell the vodka--it's worth more.

Morning, gents.
Hoping to do.... exactly nothing today.
Hope y'all have a nothing day too.

Well, I'm a state worker, so...

I went from nothing to... working 16 hours.

:sad2:

You, my Friend, need to learn how to say no.

How do you pronounce that?

I think for you guys, it's neaux.

:lmao: I have missed those...

And thanks for the welcome
(and for checking on me every so often during my self-imposed exile).

That is excellent news and may they make an official decision sooner rather then later.

I have a similar problem which I'd dearly like to have resolved as well.

Ok, I've bent your ear enough, I hush up now.
Again, may your overlords see the obviousness of the situation (and admit to it) and take you on.

How are things going with this? Any word?

Don't know why I didn't say anything about this before, (old age?), but a couple of years ago I decided my 2.5 hour commute was just too much after 12 years, so I decided that a career change was in order. I've worked in the legal field for 20 years, and the only way I could work close to home was to do switch to the medial field, specifically Medical Coding. I've taken the class, all I need now is to pass the certification exam....which I'm still working on. So this temp job I have now is only until I can pass my exam and get a job in my new field.

...and spent the entire flight in the airplane lavatory...

:rotfl2: Not quite, but I certainly did feel it during the flight.

Top O the Mornin Dads and a very Happy Birthday to Jeff! Long weekend for my football teams though my fantasy football team is doing well. Have a great week guys and enjoy all the Halloween stuff you can.
Ok, so I was helping out in the warehouse and got to talking to the guys out there. The subject of me staying came up, and I had said that I have applied for the position I'm currently in. The guys in the warehouse then revealed to me that the new boss for my department wants to keep me, which is a good thing. So either I'm going to stay on as a temp, or get hired on. Now, I'm not one to count my chickens before they're hatched, but it sounds like I'll be employed for a while. Keep your fingers crossed.
:lmao: I have missed those...

There… that seems to be working out a bit better.
For the record…
I HATE when I come down with a head cold.
I’m neigh on to useless as a human in the first place, but when you can’t even think for hacking and sneezing, it makes even the notion of being conscious just about pointless.
Maybe I need to stop taking these apparently useless cold remedies and just get bombed instead.

Anyway…
Hope all y’ll are doin’ well at least.

39 years? Any chance of retiring there yourself? Or, optional bonus for you to do so? Is it the health insurance, income, or other combo?
Oh, they’ll gladly let me “retire”. That won’t cost them anything. There are no incentives and we have no retirement benefits of any kind beyond our own 401Ks (which they stopped even matching years ago). As for carrying the health insurance over, the only option there is COBRA, and that would basically be an instant 135% increase in the premiums.

I’d like to just chuck it all, but the Missus and I are still several years away from being able to access either the IRA’s or 401’s and I’m nearly ten years away from my “recommended” retirement age for drawing from the SSA.

I kind’a need to be working.

I'm not trying to be overly intrusive, just trying to offer a new perspective.
I don’t mind questions, and I’m certainly open to suggestions….
Criticisms…
Insults…
General abuse…
It’s basically what I've grown to expect from life.

Darcy will sponsor you to become Canadian, which takes care of the insurance. :lmao:
That’d be helpful, but I’m pretty sure that won’t cut it.

I’ve actually looked into moving that direction a couple of different time over the past 20ish years, but I just don’t meet the “point” requirements.

Went to a friend's/co-worker's place for a Halloween party last night. Won a bottle of Vodka for best single costume.

Had a lot of fun, too. Got a scratch lottery ticket and won.... $1!

What should I do with my winnings? (The ticket, not the bottle. I've got that one figured out.)
Sooooo…
What was the costume?

As for the winnings…
The vodka is worth more than the loonie but if ya’ want to mail the coin down here to me, I’ll find some use for that $0.77. I guarantee that.

Morning, gents.

Hoping to do.... exactly nothing today.

Hope y'all have a nothing day too.
Well I’ve been trying to sleep since about 5am back on Saturday, but that ain’t been happening.
So, would not sleeping count as not doing anything?

Being sleep deprived... I s’pect that it’s just as well that this is also the monthly closing-week, and I have 12-to-14 hour days starting at 5am to look forward to.

It is surprising that I'm deemed unnecessary, and yet my work load keeps going up.

I'm on board with that. I would have responded earlier, but I was doing nothing...

Well, even as lazy as I am, watching football is technically doing something. So, if you drank a beer and watched football, that would be doing 2 things.
And this is why the both of you are seen by the rest of us as true leaders.

I went from nothing to... working 16 hours.

Almost the same thing?
Clearly you need to better research the concept of “nothing”…

Any luck at all with putting feelers out for other jobs?
Annnnnd.
No.

Prospects not looking particularly good at the moment.

Oh, I’m most certainly old…

Old enough to be seen as useless by society? Yes.

Old enough to “retire”… nope.

I like your plan though.
I suspect that push-come-to-shove I will be looking into doing something completely different…

It may well be a bunch of contiguous McJob’s, but I’ll do something.
There’s really no other option.

Dude. Stop answering the phone.

You, my Friend, need to learn how to say no.

Or stop answering the phone.

Thanks, but I'm only qualified to lead people to utter depravity, supreme laziness, and/ or death.

I wish I had something to help with work. You mentioned 39 years in a post (or maybe I misread) which when added to age 21, I thought put you past that 59.5 magical age to access retirement funds. But, w/o being 65 for Medicare makes those insurance costs ridiculous. Our church used to employ a business manager who was overly qualified for the job, but just worked there to buy into the family insurance plan, which was cheaper than anywhere else. Some places now will give you full time benefits for 20 hours a week.

As for Social Security, I know people say to wait and take it when it's the highest. But, I'm going with as soon as eligible. I did the math once, and the break even date was way out in the future. If you elected social security earlier, could that cover health insurance costs until you were eligible for Medicare?

Just my thoughts. Remember, I'm always trying to get out of work. Again Rob, good luck.

Now this is a happy Monday because next Monday I'll be sitting on my duff in Ko Olina for 10 days at Aulani. Now if I only had a time machine ...

A hot tub time machine. Enjoy Hawaii. Never been. DL is on my list, and I may swing a trip to Hawaii while on that side of the country.

Another option, maybe....

Since you're "unnecessary" except they keep piling more on you, have you considered telling your boss you want to be converted to a contractor? Then, if they want you to do 12-14 hours being "unnecessary", then at least you'll get more money for it.

Similar to what happened to me a few years back. They laid me off just before my 3rd anniversary so they only had to pay me two weeks severance instead of 3, but then they realized how un-unnecessary I was and asked me back as a consultant. It sucked because I had to get my own insurance and pay double the SSI, but at least I was still working.

Obviously, I don't know your financial situation or personal affairs, so just a possibility.

You could always join the ranks of those of us in public service. Seriously, my office is always hiring, regardless of age, and although we're out here in California, most of my compatriots in other states say the same thing. Health care is really good but doesn't cost a lot (I'm paying about $260/month for full coverage for me, the wife, and the boy covering health, dental, and vision). We still get a pension. I've been an attorney at the county level before and now at the state level, and out here the locals pay better than the state but the state has better health care.

But you can pretty much find every private sector job in the public sector. Something to think about.

Steampunk Mad Hatter.
I HATE when I come down with a head cold.
Ugh. Hope you get better soon.

What can you buy for 77 cents???

Nope. Sleeping = yes. Not sleeping = no.
It is surprising that I'm deemed unnecessary, and yet my work load keeps going up.
Funny how that always seems to be the case.
Clearly you need to better research the concept of “nothing”…
clearly. :sad2:
Dude. Stop answering the phone.
Now you tell me!

Morning, folks.

Mornin' Dads from beautiful Cape Cod. Working this morning in a different department and learning new things, which will hopefully make me more invaluable. Have a good day.
Good luck! Invaluable is a good thing.
dooo - waan (a cockney accent doesn't hurt)
:rotfl2:
Is that supposed to be for "don't want"???

Hey Jeff!!! :cake::bday:🎂🍻
Happy birthday, Jeff!
Happy birthday Jeff
Happy birthday, Jeff!
Happy birthday Jeff!
very Happy Birthday to Jeff!
Thank you for the birthday wishes guys.

I didn't take the day off, there's just too much going on at work right now.
But I did go see a concert last night with DW. A local band that none of you would have ever heard of, but I enjoyed it. Made me feel old though. We didn't get home until 11:00pm. If DW isn't in her PJ's by 9:00 most night, then something is wrong. I felt pretty tired myself. But nice to do for a change.
