Wow I'll have to remember this basketball thing the next time you guys talk about a football game that ends at 43-0 (think it was a Jets game) and see if you say the same things

Professional sports is a little different in my opinion. If someone wants to pay me $5M a year to get the snot beat out of me, sign me up. This was high schools sports where the losing team hit 1 free throw in the first half and one in the second. I'm pretty sure that around half time everyone can figure out the game is over. Worse than the score is the *^%$$@&#% attitude towards it. I would be completely ticked if my daughter were on either side in that game, with the anger on the winning coach either way.

And let me assure you that I am not one of the "trophies for everyone" crowd. There is a point where character has to be a factor when hiring and retaining a coach.

Morning Guys

Talked to the kid last night. She ran 20+ miles yesterday in prep for the marathon. She estimated it at around 21 miles but isn't really sure. One of her Christmas gifts is a Garmin GPS watch to accurately track how far she ran. Don't tell her, it is a surprise. Classes are over and this is finals week. SH had a late night free breakfast to keep the kids fueled up as they studied. They are also giving out cookies, cake, cider and hot chocolate during the day. Nothing like that at Florida when I went there. We spent the week having bottle rocket wars and water ballon fights. Kids these days.

OK....Was reading through the headlines and we have a new Jerk of the day in Indiana. No, not you this time. A girls high school team in Indiana ran the score up to 107-2. Really? The winning coach said he didn't want to stop scoring because it would embarass the other team. I guess hanging 107 points and winning by 105 isn't embarassing. The guy should lose his job immediately and they should bring in someone with respect for not only the his opponents, but the game of basketball.

I told my wife earlier this week that I was having one of those Ecclesiastes-type "all is meaningless" type months at work, and it sounds like you're right there with me!

I'm with you there...

This issue has brought up the subject of having a mercy rule. Indiana currently has none (obviously). The coach that won the game says he wants one, the coach that lost says she doesn't believe we should have one. I tend to agree with her.

I think what it comes down to is common sense. The winning coach claims he only had 9 players and was playing everyone, rotating players every 4 minutes. I guess my translation of this is "fresh legs on the floor every 4 minutes and starters are still getting in the game." There's no reason that anybody other than his 4 reserves and 1 starter should have been on the floor for them in the second half. I don't agree with the idea of them just holding the ball, to keep from scoring, but at least slow it down and run some offense and let your reserves get some significant playing time. It might not have altered the final outcome much due to the definite difference in talent levels, but that's at least a little more classy way to handle it, IMO.

I totally agree that there needs to be some common sense. I've been on the giving and receiving end of some lop sided games. There were a couple of times when I was coaching that we had run up a big lead. I would start putting players in different positions. One time we were still scoring so I put in a rule that any shot had to be off a volley, half-volley or header.

Nothing like that when I was at university either. In fact at the end of the first term of my freshman year, I spent the night before my biology exam watching The Who's farewell concert on tv (the first one the ever had). It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Could pass that up, I mean it was the last time we would ever see The Who perform live.

I remember during sophomore year my roommate and I were studying, and finally decided we just needed a break. We went to the movie theater and saw "Out Cold" and so began our finals week tradition of just saying screw it to go watch a funny movie that involved no thinking whatsoever.

Why were they playing in that concert? They better not have, I stayed up half the night to watch that concert 30 years ago. I mean they said that was going to be it. I should have known they would play together again; well atleast it took 30 years.

I remember those days. Not a lot of studying got done after 10 pm. I think out cafeteria was open late for those cramming but they never made anything edible.
