Thanks for the review. Maybe either his dad or Bob could take him. I don't think that it would be something I'd enjoy. Bob and I watched No Reservations last night. The love story part was good, but any movie with an underlying theme of a kid's mother getting killed makes the movie bad.We decided that Emma couldn't see it only because it has a lot to do with the war in Afghanistan and she is pretty sensitive about that. I think if it was just a general violence type thing than it wouldn't be a big deal but since the war is still current she would be worried all the time. Does that sound stupid? There were quite a few younger kids there about their age so I think he'd be fine.
Does she have anything lined up yet?Kristin is moved back into the house for the short term. It will be very nice to have her here for a little while. Again the weather up here was cold and rainy and in Richmond it was sunny and about 10 degrees warmer.![]()
At least the sun is out now. But still only 65.
Yes, Standards of Learning. Every grade has certain SOLs that must be mastered but they aren't tested on them until 3rd grade. Nicholas did say that they were taking practice tests this year though. What's an SOL? I'm assuming it is some sort of test...Standards Of Learning? When I hear SOL, I think of something else entirely. Our kids have NYS testing at certain grade levels. Actually, most grade levels now. It used to be 4th and 8th grade testing, but now they have ELA and math every year 3-8 (and Regents exams after that). There is more testing in other years--science, social studies, tech, etc.
No, it isn't. Because even though a child can't read, they still send them on to the next grade, thanks to No Child Left Behind. But don't get me on that soapbox.Standardized testing isn't all that telling, I don't think.
Chanon, it all sounds delicious. Now I'm hungry. We picked our food!(never thought I'd use that smilie!)
Appitizers are Potato Pancakes, Spring Rolls, Mushroom Purses and Bacon Wrapped Water Chestnuts. (She made us stay away from the rubens - too messy, and the sausage stuffed mushrooms - not made from scratch.)
Dinner choice will be either Prime Rib OR Tuscan Stuffed Chicken served with buttermilk whipped mashed potatoes and julienned red peppers, yellow squash and green zucchini.
We also tried the striploin - but didn't like the "horseradish a jus" - which was more like a brown gravy with horseradish mixed in; and the Chicken Aurora - which neither of us liked the caper flavor. Starches that we tried were the buttermilk potatoes, roasted redskins - too salty, and diced roasted sweet potatoes but those wouldn't have gone well with the beef or chicken we chose. The other vegetable was green beans with almonds. Blah. And the one I was really looking forward to - the pork! - it wasn't sent in the last food order to the hotel.
Oh well! Beef and chicken it is!
Have a safe drive tomorrow. It's been a busy couple of days. We have really enjoyed spending time with the kids. However, we will be leaving tomorrow afternoon. Chuck called his brother to check on his dad yesterday and found out that he isn't doing well. I have to be in Lansing for a couple of days (since I'm not needed here) and Chuck needs to get back home so he can go see his dad. Becky is currently in Grand Rapids visiting her boyfriend and is scheduled to head home on Monday. So she and Chuck are going home together and leaving me in Lansing. So we need to get to Lansing tomorrow.
Sorry Chanon. We are going to miss you once again. I promise one of these times, we'll take time to see you when we get down here. I think we'll be coming down at least twice a year now. My nephew really can use the male role model.

For those of you that have raised or are raising kids alone, my hats are off to you. I can't imagine the work involved. Watching my sister has worn me out! With their sports and counseling 4 days a week (twice for niece, once for nephew and once for sister), they are constantly on the go.
Have a safe drive tomorrow.for Chuck's dad.

No worries Vicki! We'll be in Frankemuth sometime in July. Maybe then!
Did you guys discuss flights?
How old are your sister's kids? I think you said your niece is 10, but I don't remember the age of your nephew. It is definitely difficult, but I wouldn't want them to be anywhere but here. The trick is to not let them sit around and be slaves to them. They have learned that they have to help out around the house, do chores, do things for themselves, etc. The hardest thing for me is when one kids has an activity, we all have to go. For instance, if Nicholas has soccer practice, Alyssa has to go too. Luckily there are always other younger siblings there for her to run around with. Then there is the rushing home from work, hurry and get dinner, eat quick and get out the door to whatever we have going on, get home, get showers and get in bed. Plus that will get even busier as the kids get older and have more homework. That's why I'm enjoying these 2 weeks I have with NO activities. For those of you that have raised or are raising kids alone, my hats are off to you. I can't imagine the work involved. How long has she been a single parent? My niece is 7 and my nephew is 10. They are also responsible for doing things for themself. In talking with her, she basically has said the same thing as you.
