The most I've ever managed to do with photoshop is reverse the photo so I can print it out for a transfer. I have to try some tutorials or take a class as I would love to do some of those scrapbook pages.
Where do you find the backgrounds and embellishments? Where did you start?

There are several digital scrapping sites (if you just google). There are some that have free stuff, but if you're looking for something specific you have to pay. Still, the price is cheaper than paper embellishments, and you can reuse them forever, repeatedly! Other times, you can use photoshop tricks (like bevels, shadows, etc) to make clip art or parts of photos, or just shapes (like a rectangular "ribbon") to add texture, depth, etc.
ETA: There are some tutorials available that I took when I first got photoshop... they aren't related to scrapping, but they are great to teach some of the tools that the software offers. Then I think, for me anyway, it just took lots of playing around -- and still, as you can see, some things turn out better than others.
