DDA Chapter 22

But now he has the time to find that "something" that piques his interest and if he doesn't find it right away...who is to say that a semester of nothing is a bad thing??

And he is only 10. I'll suggest trying band but won't push it. It's easier to start when everyone else starts than to try to start when everyone else has been doing it for a few years. And he does still want to play the viola, so he has something.

Beth - Sorry, got distracted by the math crisis. DH is supposed to be taking DS for his flu & meningitis vaccines, but instead he is screaming at DS about the math tests. DH would do well to SHUT UP and let me handle it.

So, Miles, instrument.
I played cello in middle school and LOVED it. I had no interest in band. I wanted DS to play a string but he refused. Percussion. :rolleyes1 And he loves it. Visions of marching band dance in his head and all that sort of thing. If he LOVES orchestra let him stay in that. If not, see if he wants to try something else.

Let Miles choose. If the rental fee for another instrument is prohibitive then have a heart to heart with him and find out what he wants to do.

The only thing I have been successful at pushing with DS is Theater classes. He balks, but he really does LIKE those classes, so when he balks I ignore him. With other stuff, when he says NO, he means NO, and if I push he is a complete snark every step of the way.

Thanks, Elizabeth! He does want to stay in orchestra. They have to do chorus which he hates. My other two both wanted to try a band instrument but dropped them after 9th and 8th grades. I guess if he doesn't want to even try, there is no reason to force the issue.

Tammi - If the nurse is going to be a snark you can go buy one of the travel tubes of Advil at Target that only hold 10 tablets.

Beth - If Miles is already happy with one instrument, I would let it alone. At this point children usually start to come to the parent asking to add another instrument. Not the other way around. As for dropping the other two extra activities... if there is a good reason for it, I would not worry any further. If he seems to be looking for things to do as the school year gets going, you can always add something but I wouldn't push it now. Just my opinion!

Elizabeth - I hope you and C get the math thing squared away to everyone's contentment level. ;)

Thanks, Elin! If he is getting bored, we can always find something for him. He'll swim 2-3 nights a week plus probably have more homework this year.

Yikes! Poor Richie and you! Do they pay him overtime? Not that it is worth the money to work those kind of hours. If they don't pay him overtime I don't know how legal that is. There are laws about who has to get paid overtime. My husband used to work at a garden center. He worked liked six 12 hour days in the summer and then the owner had a snow plow business in the winter and ended up working more than 40 hours most weeks then too. He got paid for 40 hours because they said they would pay him for 40 hours all year long. They were shocked when he quit-they are lucky he didn't listen to me and call the labor board as what they were doing wasn't legal. Then he went to work someplace that paid him for 40 hours in a check and the "overtime" in cash-but not at time & a half. DH hated that because that isn't legal. Can Richie just tell them he can't/won't continue to work those hours? Hope he can find some way to stop this madness!:wizard:

Yay for a trip with Aubrey. If you go just before she's 3 you wouldn't have to buy her an admission ticket or pay for her at character meals.;)

Thanks for the PD everyone, I'm hoping to find he had a better day when he gets home today. He's in management, so he gets paid for the OT hours he works but it is straight time, after 24 OT hours he doesn't get paid at all.

Have fun at open house Tammi

The cakes sound wonderful Glynis

Mandatory chorus is mean. I would think they would require one semester of chorus OR band OR orchestra.

Debbie, I sure hope everything turns around and is so much better for DH and his job ASAP!

For everyone dealing with school stuff, good luck and sending you a big hug!

Tammi, have fun at Open House tonight. Are they 4th and 2nd?

Beth, good for you splitting the responsibilities up. Stick to your guns! And I played French Horn through college. Hopefully, Miles will love playing an instrument.

Elizabeth, hope your backwards crown is ok!

Glynis, hope book club and the desserts were fun!

Amy, how did Alyssa do?

Elin and Tammi, thanks for the help with our trip. Trying to decide if we will fly into Philly and then rent a car, then fly out of DC or just drive... it's a LONG way!

I work tonight and then am off for 6 nights. My brother's fiancees divorce was FINALLY finalized today (after almost 3 years- a nightmare), so hopefully I will now have a new SIL and 2 adorable nieces ASAP!~ My other BIL/SIL arrive tomorrow for the Bama/VA Tech game here on Sat. We didn't get tickets, but are cooking out with friends on Sat night. And did y'all get the email from Chick Fil A? Wear your team logo/shirt on Monday and get a free Chick Fil A sandwich!

Mandatory chorus is in both 4th and 5th grades. This is in addition to their general music course. Since it's mandatory and 60+ kids at each grade level, there are plenty of behavior problems to deal with.

In 4th grade they can start a string instrument. He chose viola. I'm not sure he LOVES it yet, but he likes it well enough to want to continue.

In 5th grade they can start a band instrument. Neither orchestra nor band is required, so I don't know why they require chorus. I'm in favor of music in the schools, but not forced chorus.

That is just odd. Why FORCE them to sing? It seems to me that some kids really just can't sing. DS can't, and neither could Sister. Most kids can play an instrument with some degree of accuracy.

I agree... and as a choral director I would HATE to have all those kids who don't want to be there in my chorus.

Tammi - I don't know what the medication policies are here. I think probably if your child requires OTC meds you would have to come administer them yourself. The kids can be suspended/expelled if they are carrying OTC meds. I will tell you my prescription ibuprofen says IB800 but it doesn't come in any sort of factory sealed bottle. That nurse just likes to irritate you. ;)
Yes she does. Here, as long as you have a note from your doctor sent to the nurse, along with the meds., the nurse will administer the meds (prescription or OTC). The meds are kept in the nurse's office, ahem, CLINIC, as it is now called. So if one of my kids has a headache, they can go to her and she will give them a motrin and let them lie down for awhile.

Denise - Enjoy the game! :goodvibes

I really do think the crown is backwards. I am trying to decide if the lesser evil is leaving in there backwards, or having them pry it off to turn it around. :scared:

you have to have them rip it off and redo....call

We definitely can't sing! I get by with the 3-year olds, but I certainly don't like when there are any adults in the room.

Miles' main problem with it is that they put the well-behaved kids between not-so-well-behaved kids to try to stem behavior problems. In 4th grade, they can't handle that!
