Thanks to everyone for the hugs and well wishes!
Matthew seems to be doing great up there! I messaged with him a little on Skype last night. We didn't talk, just IM'd. Laura has texted with him a few times today. Today is move-in for almost everyone else. He met his roommate briefly and said that he seems nice. Then he left the room to give the roommate and parents a little space and privacy. His girlfriend also arrived today, but he felt that she and her parents needed space and privacy, too. The only concern left is getting his classes/schedule straightened out (which can't happen until tomorrow) and then getting books. This school is a little weird about doing schedules. They have a "default" first semester schedule in each major for freshman. After pulling all of Matthew's AP courses out, he is left with a writing course, a mandatory seminar from his department, and honors seminar for a total of 5 credits. Now he needs to fill that out to at least 15 credits. He was given credit for Chem I and II, but he may take Chem II anyway instead of going straight into Organic Chemistry. He was given credit for Calc I, and I think he decided not to retake that but to go into Calc II. I think he also needs Physics. He took the AP in that, but it wasn't for calculus based physics. My biggest concern is books. Classes start Monday. I don't know if we'll have time to order books online. I didn't want to leave him with enough cash to go to the book store. He couldn't get a credit card without a schedule that showed he is a full-time student. The credit union lady advised against a ATM or debit card, since he is getting a credit card so soon. The credit card will become the ATM card. We definitely should have pushed for the ATM card, but hindsight is 20/20. It will all work out. He is close enough that I can drive up there for a few hours to give him the cash or put the books on my credit card. We just have to wait to see what tomorrow afternoon brings in the way of a schedule.
Well today was the first day I had to see our new town without the kids...I ran some errands & puttered around town. Also got to do alittle exploring. I am so happy that we have so much close to us but the town still feels spread out. I am not used to how nice the driving is here...people let you pass & they are so polite at the stop signs...it is so good for the blood pressure! NY was never like that, we had traffic everywhere & heaven forbid you pause at a stoplight for more than 1 second after it turned green!

See, I am so spoiled in this area with little to no traffic that I am not sure that I could move to many other areas. I am glad that you had a good day and are adjusting well to the new location!
Hmm. I just spoke to some person at the district level. Not sure exactly what her role is - Parent Resource Specialist. I got her name from the "Constituent Hotline". At any rate, she says they have a new computer system that did all sorts of bizarre things with placing students in courses they didn't ask for. Not sure I believe that. She said I should wait until Friday, then contact the counselor and ask again for a schedule change. If she does not comply with my request I am to phone this lady back and she will set up an appointment with the principal. OK. Well, I will go see the counselor on Thursday and see what she says. If she doesn't move him out of ROTC I will phone this lady back and tell her I want to meet with the principal Monday morning.
I hope that you get this worked out quickly!
Beth - Hope he settles in quickly. Kind of odd to be there on such an empty campus for a few days, I'm sure. Where is he going again? Hope Mom's settling in too.
He is going to SUNY (State University of New York) - ESF (Environmental Science and Forestry). It is right next to Syracuse University, and they use SU's residences, dining halls, bookstore, etc. He is in Bioprocess Engineering which is very similar to Chemical Engineering but working on replacing petroleum with biomass. His goal for the moment is master/PhD and then into the research area. Of course, things could drastically change in the next four years. Afterall, I was positive that I was going to be a pediatrician when I started college.
well...all 3 kids are in school.
I hope the 2 youngest come back with glowing reports.
Jackie had a tough first day of high school...I was so drained trying to talk things through. She is in ALL accelerated classes. Her closest friends are not...so she feels she has NO friends in her classes. I gave her the "you will make new friends speech" but it did not help. In one class, she is the only freshmen girl. PLEASE PLEASE let it be a better day today for her!!!

I hope that Jackie finds her niche soon and that she is much happier! It is so hard to start high school.
We're back and we had a
Fabulous
Wonderful
Amazing
Perfect
Couldn't have been better
Vacation
The weather was phenominal, travel was completely on time with no hickups, the resort was gorgeous, the food was better than cruise ship food, alcohol was included. We would go again without a second thought. The kids did very well with my parents and apparently behaved perfectly. My mother wasn't worn out this time and has actually commented several times since we've been back that her house is entirely too quiet
I'm going to try to put together a slide show, but probably won't do a trip report.
I am so happy for you! I had my fingers crossed for good weather the whole week.
so what does a person put in google to get divorce help on the cheap??
I know it will be contested because Jim is delusional and I have no money at all (though I am betting I could borrow from my mom...but that's not 100% either because she isn't working either)
I have no idea, but

and lots of

for you, Cassidy, and Abi!
How far away is he, Beth? How are you doing with it?
Syracuse is only about an hour and a half away from here. It's not a bad drive at all when the weather is good. I am doing ok. I am happy to hear him "talk" about going to lunch with other people, etc. It sounds like he is adjusting very well.
If Abi is anything like Katie, she does not want any confrontation, at all! Katie would rather bury her head in the sand until her stomach explodes from all the stress.
Sounds like Laura...
Christopher had a great day.
Kirsten had a great day.
Still bad for Jackie <sigh>.....in attempting to make things better...I will try picking her up after school (she is going nuts over the pm bus) and I need to talk to the counselor tomorrow. She is the only girl in 1 class....and it is causing MAJOR trauma.

for Jackie!
Good first day of school here. Even Katie liked it!
Everybody I've been working on getting another DISer to come on over to our little corner of the world Camster0307.....I met her via one of her trip reports and have always thought she'd be a great fit over here. She's been a great friend even though I've never met her IRL...it's just like this batch of great people...part of a family.
Cammie has 2 beautiful daughters and is hilarious (though she likes The Office..that is where we have to agree to disagree). Her trip reports are great!!
She's asked if I would vouch for her over here...did I do okay??

Hi, Cammie!
First day of school here today. I shared some photos on FaceBook, but since I know som of you aren't on there, I thought I would share a couple here too!
No staples were involved with this sign. Although I threatened to!
She looks great! We are so not ready for school to start here, though Laura would really like her schedule to come.
First of all WELCOME CAMMIE!!! Stop lurking and join us! Theresa can vouch for us, we are not frightening at all!
Kristine - Love the turkey!
Tammi - I think I agree with Tia. While the race would be something fun and different, I think it would depend on whether or not you guys are going back sooner or later. Really talk with the kids and let them help you make the decision.
Deb - Good luck with the training days! It's nice to have you back!
Everything went well with Timothy's appointment yesterday! He is 26 and a half inches long, and weighs 19 pounds. For some reason, I thought he was much heavier than that. Must just be my old arms! The doctor does want me to bring him in for a swine flu vaccine in October, so we'll do that. The rest of us will be getting a regular flu shot at the same time.
Today will be an interesting day for me! Alan enrolled me in some classes to learn medical coding. He's lined up a job for me to do at home with a company that does medical coding for doctor's across the country. I have 4 months to complete the training and I get to start today. I'm not sure how I feel about it, as it's not something I ever wanted to do, but we really need the extra money that this job will bring in. Please wish me luck!
Good luck! I actually think that sounds like a good job. Think the company needs anyone in NY?
Abi's book showed up...that is why she didn't talk to the teacher...but the teacher (I am betting) would have let her do the homework in Core Plus if she had talked to her about the situation.

Such a kid...Glynis you are right she is a lot like your Katie. Abi has also always had a very strange fear of adults (esp. seniors...this teacher is definitely not one)
Yep, that's Laura! I am happy to hear that her notebook showed up!
So I decided to look it up...and have gotten somewhat cold feet...not because I think my marriage is salvageable more because I hate admitting defeat or that I made a mistake.
It's not failure or a mistake on your part unless you let it become one. People change. Circumstances change. You need to do what is best for you and the girls. No matter what your decision ends up being, I think you are strong, and definitely not a failure.
that happens in my house after 2:30 pm
No school here yet, so it happens any time of the day here.
