This is from the NY State Health Dept. website... again, specifically targeting schools and not homeowners:

Recycling/Disposing of Hazardous/Universal Waste

All schools must establish a program for the proper collection and removal (recycling/disposal) of hazardous and universal wastes. It is illegal and unsafe to dispose of these wastes in the regular trash or down the drain. Three possible options for proper recycling/disposal of these wastes are:

1. Schools may be able to make arrangements to recycle/dispose of their hazardous and/or universal wastes with their municipality. This may be done at a household hazardous waste collection event or at a permanent household hazardous waste facility.
2. Some schools may coordinate hazardous and/or universal waste recycling/disposal with another municipal department, possibly saving money on transportation and labor costs.
3. A school may hire a hazardous waste contractor. Municipal entities and schools may take advantage of State purchasing contracts with certain vendors that provide waste handling (recycling/disposal) services at a pre-negotiated rate. More information on State contracts can be obtained from the New York State Office of General Services (NYSOGS). Contact information is provided at the end of this document.

Better not! Mercury is highly toxic and remains so for centuries.
Yeah, Yeah, I know.

I remember playing with it on the kitchen counter when I was little. My mom broke the thermometer.

Yeah, Yeah, I know.

Isn't it amazing how we and our ancestors survived the unsurvivable??

I know too....I just haven't actually seen a mercury thermometer in forever.

so I ended up in black slacks and a faux twin sweater set in cream....I am hoping it's okay as it's raining now and I don't feel like walking in panty hose in the rain.

I think you will be just fine. :goodvibes

Hi!!!!!!!! Just got internet service at our new house..I have missed chatting with you all so much this week! We are settling in. Kids have met so many friends this week & have been playing outside every evening with their pals. We have appliances coming tomorrow. There is no furniture so theres lots of echos around here.

Hope you are all doing well & I will come on later tonight to try & catch up. Take care,
:goodvibes

Sounds like things are going well! :thumbsup2

So did my mom. But only SHE was allowed to play with it, because it was dangerous.

After getting the mail, I grabbed a bowl of watermelon and my chair and sat on the deck in the sun for 45 minutes. (all I could take as the top of my head starting feeling burnt) I think a couple more days of sitting in the sun is really going to help my blah.

Glad to hear that the settling is going well, and that the kids have made lots of friends.

Thanks for all the searching, Elin. I guess I'll make a few phone calls. (Or more likely stick it in the back of the drawer for another 18 years.) I have no idea where I got a mercury thermometer, but it must be from when Matthew was born. I always used a digital one, though,

I'm guessing that you are down visiting for April vacation as I think the kids are finishing the school year in NY. Unless I missed something along the way :confused3 I'm so happy that things are going well. Did the big closet win her over?

Oh, this makes sense!

Our dump has hazardous waste day. I bet you could bring it to a hoptial and turn it in too.

I ran my errands and had lunch with my husband. I forgot how nice it was to have an entire day off :lmao:

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm glad that you are enjoying your day off.

Yeah, Yeah, I know.

I remember playing with it on the kitchen counter when I was little. My mom broke the thermometer.

We broke a thermometer once when I was little, too. I wasn't allowed to play in it, but my father recalled being able to buy small amounts of mercury to play with when he was young.

Anne Marie so nice to hear from you! Glad the kids are enjoying there new soon to be home :goodvibes

Tammi I hope all went well with the call today :wizard:

Theresa good luck today!

Elizabeth glad to hear you are still among the living ;)

That sounds perfect.

I am having a wonderful day. I haven't got a lick of cleaning done, but I took a lovely nap. My mental status is certainly better than it has been in weeks :goodvibes

Oh no. Didn't you say her last boyfriend passed away :hug:
Yes, that was about 15 years ago. She's been with this one for a long time-10+ years. She is one of the most kind hearted people I know. She always sees the best in everyone and every situation. She never lets anything get her down. When I'm in a real cranky mood I often think to myself "how would Sue" look at this situation. She's very talented too-does wonderful stain glass work. She is attracted to artistic types. This guy is a not financially sucessful musician so she basically supports him. I really don't know much about him at all. I don't even know if he has insurance-I'm sure she has it through our work but you have to be married to get coverage and they are not married. I'm sure that is the least of her concern now though. I just feel so bad for her and wish I could do something. I did ask her if I could cook anything for her so she wouldn't have to do fast food but she says she's only staying about 5 minutes per visit as she doesn't want to agitate him. He is still sedated. She said she sang a song he wrote for her this morning and he started moving-he's restrained, so she stopped.

SIL is going to go to Six Flags with us. She is taking my neice and nephew. That means there will be 10 of us. Colby is happy as Logan is now his "friend" for the trip. Having 10 will give everyone a ride buddy too.
I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Good thoughts for your coworker and her boyfriend.
Thanks!

I have a phone conference with my attorney later this morning. Please keep your fingers crossed that the outcome is good, or at least something that I can work with/is feasible.
:wizard:Hope things went OK.

Sounds like things are going well. You're just there for a visit for now right?

Anyone know how to dispose of an old mercury thermometer?
I too was going to suggest finding out if your town does a hazardous waste day.
