DDA Chapter 16

I had a bridal shower thrown for me by my suite-mates and the girls for whom I had been an RA the year before. There were no family-sponsored showers or anything from friends from "back home." I hosted a bridesmaids' luncheon at the restaurant where I had worked for a few summers during college on the day before our wedding and Bob's family held the rehearsal dinner at their home. We invited all our out-of-town friends to that dinner too. His Mom and aunts had been cooking for weeks before. It was a glorious time. There was beer and I think my FIL even broke out the medicinal whiskey! But the doors (and the front porch and back yard) closed fairly early since we had a 10:00 a.m. wedding. Bob and his family had to go to mass before the wedding, so they all had to be up very early too. There were 250 people at our wedding and our reception was a sit-down breakfast at the Country Club with punch bowls of Bloody Mary's and Screwdrivers available for those who wished to drink. We had a ball!

When we bought ours it was buy one get one 1/2 price. Maybe you won a buy one get one free dream award They would just destroy it anyway so I think I would keep it. We actually had to have ours recut several times due to imperfections in the faces. At one point Hunter looked like he had a goiter.

I guess it's my turn to ask for pixie dust! Alan came home from work and announced that his company laid off 13 people today. He thinks he's ok, due to his seniority, but you just never know.

I am sorry to hear this. Layoffs, even of co-workers, is scary and hard on those who are left. I am hoping that Alan's job is secure, Glynis.

When we got married, John was 20 and I was 19. We must be very old, as only family was at my dry bridal shower, only a handful of guys at John's dry bachelor party (which was at the best mans house, they watched a stag movie while John found something else to do) and we had a dry wedding reception.

It's been a long day here. The kids are all taking turns being my least favorite!

Yay on another WW day down! I have three down here, too. I'm sorry that dinner wasn't so great, though. My family wanted beef stew, so I made one using lots of veggies and just had a small portion. They had biscuits under their stew, and I just had stew.

Sorry about the kids, too. We had a fairly relaxing day here. Laura was a bit of a pain about having to go out to synchro, because she wanted a WHOLE snow day, but she went. Matthew actually finished the college essay for the college he hopes not to go to.

We played Mario Kart on the Wii and had a great time. Man, am I bad at video games! They always like when I play, because they know that they won't be last.

Even though you weren't happy with the photo shoot, you still got a couple of good shots, and they weren't that expensive, no? I know how frustrating it can be to not have a good photographer that likes to work with the kids.

They were more expensive than they should have been!

School is delayed for two hours, so instead of going back to bed, I think I will Dis for a little while.

Tammi, there is a new law that is supposed to go into effect Feb. 10th, that will put a stop to the resale of used clothing, and any boutique children's clothing that is made for resale.
This law was to stop the infiltration of lead and deadly toxins that overseas toy manufacturers put into their products.
But since the law states that it is for all products for children under the age of 12, alot of businesses will go bankrupt.
They cannot afford the thousands of dollars that it will take to make sure that each and every product that goes into their creations is determined safe.
I understand the need for a law like this, but alot of small mom owned businesses (Dad owned too) are going to suffer.

Tom (and Jennifer) -- It's not as bad as it once seemed. I think they're mostly going to crack down on ebay type sales, where there are lots of scams, etc. Here is a much better update, saying that yard sales, consignment stores, twins club thrift sales (!), etc should be fine!

Mariel, who runs a twins club, wrote me to say that her club contacted the legislative clerk for the Consumer Trade and Consumer Protection sub committee and was told that under the CPSIA they will be allowed to have third-party sales such as their yard sales. Looks like consignments sales and yard sales may be okay. I'm looking forward to seeing an official public announcement on the matter.

In a recent post here on BC a reader also comments that her local Freecycle group sent out an email telling members that gifting on Freecycle will still be allowed.


In more general CPSIA news, I'm thrilled to tell you that Your actions are making a difference!

"The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has been flooded with calls and e-mails from people concerned about how the new law will affect these small businesses" says a recent article at Colorado's 9News.com. Likewise, a new Smart Mama article, Is relief in reach for small business owners under the CPSIA? suggests that all that letter-writing and calling is causing the Consumer Product Safety Comission to think about the effect that the CPSIA will have on small businesses. Keep writing and calling! You're making a difference!"

Oh great! I just found out that the UCA High School Nationals Cheer leading Competition is the first weekend in February. Most values and mods are said to being booked.

I think most of them are staying at the All Star resorts, and some overflow into CBR. Hopefully POP will stay relatively cheerleader free!

I don't mind cheerleaders, heck Leighanna wants to be one, but I can only imagine the noise that will be created by all these kids!

So goes thinking that Feb. would be a quiet time to enjoy the parks!

I am sure that with their competitions and schedules, that we probably won't feel the effects until later in the evenings. We should still be fine!

I hear that with Pop Warner, you don't see much effect in the park at all, just at the resort. I hope that's the case for you!

Prayers needed for Chuck's mom. She is in the hospital again. It sounds like her meds messed up her system. She will be coming home Friday or Saturday. Chuck is going to go stay overnight with her at least her first night home.

Since I have to head back down here on Sunday and wouldn't get home until Friday night (when Chuck would be gone anyway), I'm just going to stay down here for the week-end. I might go see my mother on Saturday and spend the day with her as she'll be at my aunt's house which is only a couple of hours from here.

(And to think, not 2 years ago I ran a half marathon. It just plain sucks that the "un-training" is so much easier than the training! )

Same here. We are trying not to do any shopping, and are eating out of our pantry for the most part. I do shop for the basics, but it looks like I might need to brush up on my bread making! Cost of food is just ridiculous!

Have you noticed that food container sizes are getting smaller but prices are staying the same or getting higher?? I've noticed that with bread, chips, and cereal to name a few...

Thanks for all the pixie dust and good wishes. So far nothing specific has been mentioned about our area, and I hope that we would hear more rumors if this site were closing. There still could be numerous lay-offs, though. My dh is so relaxed about it. He says that there is no use worrying about something that you can't change; you can just do your best to be prepared, and he really means it. I guess I'm just a worrier.

I so agree with this. and with what Elizabeth said. I also hate that Medicaid will make women that want their tubes tide wait till they are 21.

A few years back I heard that TX had some really bizarre rules about tube tying, but maybe the minimum age 21 thing is all that remains. The way it was explained to me was you have to have a MINIMUM of 2 children AND your husband has to give you permission to tie your tubes. I guess after the third child you can decide for yourself? Anyway, I am sure you see firsthand how out of control the teen births are.

I have always been kind of "different" from most people on that. I love parties but the idea of getting wasted just never appealed to me - especially at my wedding. I was usually the odd man out growing up because of this. I also never understood the whole embarassing other people thing - like smashing a piece of cake in the face.

I especially felt like an odd duck in high school and college. That has been a problem for my daughters as well.

Because of the alcoholics there was NO alcohol at my wedding. But we got married in a hotel so they all just walked over to the hotel bar and bought drinks. And no smashing cake in anyone's face. I think it crossed DH's mind, but I frightened him into submission.

Woohoo! I'm finally caught up. It only took a half hour!

Bob and the kids took me out to dinner tonight. My choice. So I picked Red Lobster. I was in the mood for seafood, shrimp and scallops.

I got a 3D cube from WDW with Nicholas and Alyssa's picture inside, with the light-up base, which is what I asked for. Funny thing is, WDW sent 2!!!!! He got one before Christmas, that came with the original paperwork. Then yesterday the other one showed up at his house. No paperwork whatsoever in it. He said he tried calling WDW, but was on terminal hold. So being that he made an effort to correct their mistake, should I feel good about keeping it? I was considering giving that one to my parents.

same here, add to that are brilliant govt. is banning the re sale of kids clothes so its a good thing I got a sewing machine for christmas. now just to figure out how to use it. We have deers around here so not sure how well I would be able to grow a garden but that is a thought.

I don't think that resale law is actaully going to be as restrictive as they first said.

Been there, done that. Stayed at Pop during the high school cheerleader thing. NO problem at all. We never saw them. The Indiana Jones show was closed because they were using the stage, and MGM closed at 7 PM one night for their party but it was not disruptive to our touring.

Today is Princess's birthday! I need to wrap her present and make some lunch for DS. Chat with you later!
