Question for you elementary school moms.....

What instruments are offered in your schools? I remember when I was in elem. school violin/viola was offered for 5th and 6th graders.

Today I get a note from school saying that 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are going to be playing the recorder. I am requested to buy one (thank goodness they are only $4 and change) or he can share in the school's supply and they will be washed after every use in the dishwasher.

I know everyone learns how to play the recorder. I can not recall what grade that starts in.

In third grade they offer Orchestra- Violin, Viola, Cello, Upright Bass
In 4th-6th they also offer band- Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Oboe, Baritone, Tuba, and Snare and Bass Drum In Junior high they offer more instrument choices.

This is during the school day. They pull kids out of regular class for a lesson once a week.

No instruments are really offered here. Kids that already play a stringed instrument have a small orchestra class once a week an hour before school starts. Choir is also offered at the same time. I know that our 3rd and 4th graders learned a bit of the recorder (I say a bit, because it was just a tiny amount, like 2 weeks). May I suggest you buy him one? I just don't trust the dishwashers to sanitize something as personal as a recorder. Ick!!!

Is anyone up for assisting Nicholas with his Flat Stanley project. We have to send FS off for a month or so, and you are requested to keep a journal, attach pictures and send postcards. We would really appreciate it. After everyone jumps at the chance ;), if you don't mind, I'll let him choose where he wants FS to 'vacation.' TIA!

You could send him here, but we're not really going to do anything spectacular for the rest of the year. I'm kind of sedentary these days!

That's they way I remember my elem school being. This is strictly during their once a week music special. I wish they had more of a music option.

We had a music program that a couple of mom's put together, wrote a grant for and got a little bit of funding for. They would come in once a week and teach rhythm, note value, etc. It really wasn't much music at all. This summer, our principal got a larger grant for art in the classroom, so they cut the music program altogether. I'm not too upset about it, since the volunteer who does choir still does that, and my kids get piano and violin lessons outside of school. I'm thrilled about the art program. Katie and Jacob love it, and they are getting really good at it, too.

I wish there were a better music program offered, but I can wait for jr. high next year where there is a full orchestra program and a band one as well.

All kids are required to play the recorder in 3rd grade. I think they cost about $4, but I've since seen them at dollar tree. They can also give up one recess per month to learn hand drumming (that can continue through 8th grade). 4th grade is when band is offered. Flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, (other horns and brass perhaps) percussion (snare, bass, cymbols etc.) Strings are not offered at all.

Stanley can visit with us. Have you considered photocopying Stanley and sending in all different directions :confused3 I think Glynis used that technique.

Just wanted Stanley to have realistic expectations. ;)

That's probably a better plan than sending him here. :rotfl2:

Well, we WERE going to go to Target but it's raining. :headache: I bought overnight diapers because Princess keeps flooding out of her Pull-Ups at night. Well, now she is flooding out of the overnight diapers almost every night. Since that happens when I'm not here I can't accurately diagnose the problem. I don't know if they aren't putting the diaper on properly or what.:confused3 So Dadboss wants more plain diapers. I told Momboss Princess HAS to use the potty before bed and that she can't have anything to drink after about 7:30 PM, but I don't think they are adhering to that.

The only night time product that works for heavy wetters is Huggies Good Nights. I swear by them and we've tried everything. He occassionally wet through those, but not nearly as often as everything else.

The basic structure of "Tater", as we dubbed him, is complete. I'm waiting for Chris to get home with more wire coat hangers to make a ring to push out his lower half. We still need to make all his pieces parts. I think he is pretty cute though I'm not sure how uch visability he will have. I may be leading a blind man around :rotfl:

Grrrrr.....

Why do people not understand my "No Soliciting" sign on my front door????? I've had 3 people selling magazines door to door today. It's so frustrating! I hate telling people "no," so I got the sign. Apparently, people don't know what soliciting means anymore.

Sorry for the rant! I just don't have patience for it anymore!

Huh. I am not remembering things very well in my old age. DS said there WAS a music teacher in his elementary, I had just forgotten about it. And I DO remember the man since DS said his name, I just didn't remember the music teacher part. :confused3 DS did NOT ever play a recorder. He confirmed that.

Deb - Huggies Overnights (the diaper kind) are the ones that are leaking. They think it is a fit problem as opposed to an absorbency problem. We shall see!

I thought Dadboss was going to be late tonight (Momboss has a work function) so I putzed around and didn't get anything done. Then he came home at 6 PM! :scared1: You'd think I would learn, because that happens a lot.

Chanon - Another lovely box! You know, I think I heard a rumor that there was a box mailed out of Dallas to you this morning. But I could be wrong. :rolleyes1 WHY did Kristine have your ME tags? Aren't YOU the travel agent? I haven't been able to work that out. Did you rent points from her?

Elizabeth you read me wrong. You need the Huggies Good Night because Good Nights mean Good Mornings;) They are the pull up kind. The Overnights sucked.

Elizabeth - you are correct - I rented from her so she's the TA in this situation! :teeth: Though I did get her an upgrade on her cruise...does that mean I can get an upgrade on my room at WL??

Has anyone ever read any books by Robin McKinley? She re-writes fairy tales. I'm reading "Spindle's End" right now, and loving it!!! It's a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty, and it's so well written!!! I'm highly recommending it to anyone with teenage daughters, or if you just like to read fairy tales with a new twist.

Very good!
