DD7 Dental Problems?

Hello
As I am writing this I am still in shock: DD7 had a routine dentist appointment. Well I figured she would one day have to have braces because of the way her teeth were coming in. They did x rays, no cavities, so I should be happy-NOT. The dentist ticked me off because he sat down to look at DD's teeth and proceeded to yak on his cell phone, after 5 minutes, I said excuse but my time is imporant. So he got off the phone. She needs a couple sealants so food won't get in which is no problem. Then I heard extraction twice, she has to have 2 baby teeth taken out next month then have a retainer put in, then later have braces. My biggest thing is the extractions. I have never knock on wood had to have a tooth removed nor have braces, but I recently watched DM get a tooth removed and I am freaking at the prospect of watching DD get it done. She is just 7 years old. Thanks for reading this, I am just shocked because I didn't think they could do a retainer thing this young. Anyone with similar experiences?

I had some baby teeth extracted at age 8 or so, my own dd is 10 and the dentist just now gave the okay to look into orthodontia. Her position has been that it is waste to do braces or retainers until most of the permanent teeth are in.

You could always consult with another orthodontist.

If you do end up doing the extractions, you don't need to be in there to watch it! Particularly if you think you will be visibly upset. Our dentist actually prefers that parents not come into the treatment room after the initial visit. The kids often get upset when they see their parents upset.

My kids have had a few classmates that had braces and other applicances this young, however, it often meant that they had to have TWO sets of braces - one now and one in their teen years.

If you're at all uncomfortable about this whole process, I would certainly seek a second opinion from another dentist or from an orthodontist. You don't have to take this guy's word for it.

I would highly suggest getting a second opinion. Our dentist (who I love) wanted DD to see an orthodontist at age 7 just to get an opinion. He said that she had alot of her permanent teeth earlier than usual, and that braces would definitely be in her future. First orthodontist went into this long drawn out procedure of palate expanders, breaking her jaw, braces now then again in a few years. Totally freaked me out.

Went to see a second orthodontist who totally disagreed. Wanted to just observe for a while before making any moves at such a young age.

Because the two were on two different ends of the spectrum, went for a third opinion. 2nd and 3rd opinion agreed, except that 3rd orthodontist felt that it wouldn't be a bad idea to just get a retainer for her to wear at night so that the teeth that were grown in already wouldn't start shifting.

She actually is getting a baby tooth pulled on Monday (she's now 8) because the permanent tooth is growing out towards her lip, so the baby tooth really isn't being pushed out like it should. And we will be going with the 3rd orthodontist.

Good luck!

What you are seeing with you DD is becoming the common trend. Dental professionals are starting orthodontia earlier and earlier, and doing more at young ages to help prepare for the necessary years of braces, to ensure the child has straight teeth. Among kids I babysit, I been seeing the trend of pulling baby teeth at young ages, just so they aren't in the way. My niece had 3 healthy baby teeth pulled at age 5. Then they proceed through retainers, expanders, braces, more retainers, and then a second round of braces later on. Becoming very common and accepted practice to start orthodontia very early. I know many kids who have work already started at age 5 6r 6. Parents want their children to look good, who can blame them?

I would seriously consider what the dentist is suggesting, or get a second opinion since he sounded unprofessional and that eroded your confidence in him!!

My DD, 10 just got braces in Sept. but she did get a palate expander when she was 7. Several of her friends have had teeth pulled and it seems like no big deal. I would get a second opinion or at least find out the reason for the extractions.

My DD10 has had 6 baby teeth pulled (only two came out on their own  ). I, myself, had 4 baby teeth & 4 permanent teeth pulled, and my 3 wisdom teeth dug out. The pulling itself isn't a big deal at all, can't be felt. It's a bit sore for a few days after, but not terrible. Did the dentist say why they needed to be pulled?

Go get a another dentist & do not even tell him what the first one said. I have had Dentist try to rip me off in the past. You got a bad vibe listen to it.

GET A SECOND OPINION!

Don't trust that he is giving you accurate info. He may be but I wouldn't feel comfortable unless I had another Dentist tell me the same thing.

Also, if the Dentist is a jerk, go to someone else.

We have a wonderful Dentist now who my children love. We had one in Michigan who yelled at my 5 yr old because he was crying as something hurt.

7 sounds a little young to be having teeth pulled but I could be wrong.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hello again
I think I will call tomorrow and talk to him and ask him why they can't wait for her baby teeth to come out on their own. I was just such in a charlie brown episode: where his teacher is talking to him, but all he can hear is wha wha. I want what is best for her and the dentist up until this point was always nice and professional. The hygenist was saying that after the retainer that would be in her mouth for a couple years then would come braces then maybe have to take a few permanet teeth out to make more room. If he can't give me an answer I am comfortable with I will get a second opinion and like a another poster suggested not mentioning what the 1st dentist suggested. I don't trust dentists really. My Mom is always having to go get ones pulled and she goes every 6 months and I am thinking why didn't he see all the decay a few months ago? Thank you for all for your advice. I do want is best for my daughter, but I don't want to do something if I don't have to with the extraction part. Wish me luck.

If they were baby teeth I wouldn't be too worried and they aren't too big of a deal to pull because they have short roots. If they are adult teeth no way without another oppinion but I think the only adult teeth a 7 year old would have would be front teeth. It never hurts to get a second oppinion. A bunch of kids in my DD class over the years have had to have baby teeth pulled for braces.

My DD had 9 adult teeth at age 7.

If the dentist is suggesting a retainer, pulling baby teeth etc, I would definintely recommend seeing an orthodontist. After seeing everything my DD went through at the orthodontist's office, I just can't imagine that a regular dentist would have that level of expertise.
