just now. And I don't mean the one at Epcot!!! I was upstairs and didn't hear her cell phone ring of course. I come down and there she is telling her friend from school that she missed her too. Asked who she was talking to - and it's Maria. As I'm sitting here dising, I suddenly remember that her friend Maria is currently in Italy visiting family there. Anyone have any idea at all how much that will cost us??

oh my!!! I would be afraid to see that phone bill!!

My DD16 is in Europe right now....I got her a AAA prepaid debit card and a phone card to use while she is traveling. The first night she tries to use the phone card and for some reason it isn't working....so instead of calling the 800 number on the back of the card for assistance...she uses her debit card to make 4 phone calls from Germany to MA. For each phone call, the phone company puts a $25 hold on her debit card ~ to be reversed within 4 - 7 business days (she'll be home by then!!!) ~ then the actual charge for the phone call. So far we are waiting for the (4) $25 holds to be reversed and one more phone call charge to post.....grand total so far on (4) phone calls...$218

That's just it... she had no clue!!! Maria called her... midnight their time - everyone else is asleep. Lora didn't recognize the number and just answered it. Teaching time... don't answer the phone if you don't recognize the number. She said OK - no mouthy reply. She really didn't know. I asked her to please not answer her phone if she called again. OK, without any huffing and puffing.

It should not cost you anything, called came from Italy, right? If you do not have free incoming, or free late night, just the minutes usage.

I was stunned to find my cell phone worked to and from the dominican republic and Jamaica. It wasn't really that much. I made quite a few calls and recieved quite a few and my bill went up maybe 20 bucks? Same phone wouldnt work in the bahamas or mezico though go figure.

My DD back in the day, used her regular phone, that was in her room that was in MY name, to call her Boyfriend in.......JAPAN! For 2 months worth of calls the bill was a whopping $$700.00. SHE PAID IT ALL OFF after I had the phone disconnected.

it probably shouldn't cost you anything, other than minutes used...as long as Maria called her, not the other way around....I would hate to see what Maria's phone bill will be though after making that phone call!!

that's what DD's 3 of the 4 calls were ~ to her boyfriend ~ only 1 phone call home to us...to tell me the phone card wasn't working

Hopefully they have both learned their lessons about making overseas phone calls!!!

Not all cell phone plans allow for international calling within their free minutes. Some charge a hefty per-minute charge.

DD and I used AIM a lot while she lived in Japan. Sure helped with phone costs.

Maybe if I call and beg Verizonwireless, and explain that DD was called and she's a minor, and I had no knowledge..... But on the other hand the phone is DH and my names... And frankly, they may just not care!

I do not think they would care(not trying to be rude just ...using your words)...I would call and ask how much the call will cost, and she can start getting babysitting jobs to pay it off. Don't panic...it is a life lesson...at least she didn't wreck a car or burn down the house. It will be ok...she will learn her lesson.

Who called who? If called originated in Italy, to here, there should be no cost, or at most, minutes used off allowable, and if over, a per minute charge, very low. If call was made to Italy, would be higher, but even then, if properly made, with forethought, int'l calls can be quite inexpensive.
