DD10 wants to buy an AG Doll

I still have the Cabbage Patch doll that saved up and bought when I was 11 (and the box too). Let's just say that was way more than 20 years ago. I still remember when I FINALLY had enough money and then waited until store got a shipment in.

Let your DD buy the doll.

my DD just turned 12 yesterday and she got her 7th AG doll (Chrissa) for her birthday from her great-grandmother. not only was she thrilled, but her friends were jealous and telling their moms they wanted one too! DD loves them and takes great care of them-her BFF loves to play with them when she comes over. DH has made furniture (beds and clothing armoires) for them. i know it may sound silly to some, but i'm relieved she still loves her dolls. she didn't start playing with baby dolls until she was 10, she was always into building blocks and barbies. OP, i hope you and your DD can come to a compromise.

I begged my mom when I was 16 for Samantha, I was so shocked when I actually got her for Christmas. She was my favorite thing in the whole world, better than a car because I wanted her so badly!

The AG dolls are really great, and they hold up well. You can also send them to the AG hospital if something does happen to them.

Sears has a cute line of Dollie and Me clothes that fit AG dolls.....much cheaper...just adding in case anyone can use the info. On sale right now until Sept 19 and use coupon code for 15% off....

The code for the 15% off is appsavings15

Those outfits are super cute! The sizes won't fit DD10, but so cute!!

RILEY - I hear you! I still had my Cabbage patch doll with accessories and gave her to my girls, but they weren't interested in her at all. Poor Annabella! Every once in awhile I see her wrapped up in a blanket in the "baby section" of the playroom so it gives me hope she's being loved.

I talked with DD10 last night and she said she'd look at Ebay and would be 'open to considering a doll from Ebay'. So we'll see.

I bought my American Girl doll when I was 10, I saved up my money to do so. Since then I have also bought a car and a phone. I say let her buy the doll and be a kid for a while, having to save for a car is why to grown up for a 10 year old.

Be careful with Ebay. People always assume it is cheaper but many times at least when I was looking the dolls are going for very close to what they would cost to order new. If the savings amounted to anything less than half what the doll would cost I would order a new doll. There is nothing like getting something so special new, especially for her first one. You also know absolutely the condition of the doll. $20 isn't worth getting a used doll for something that she will be keeping so long.

Clothes, furniture, accessories, yeah go ahead and get used. Just be careful that you are saving enough for the trade off on new and used with the doll, there will be a difference.

My dd turns 13 this December and she still loves her AG dolls. She wants Josefina this year. I think that kids should be kids as long as they can. I am in no hurry for dd to become a moody teenager!

It's a very good lesson to allow her to have a goal of saving 100$ to buy something she wants. My son asked for an IPod in 3rd grade and I thought he was way too young to be responsible for it. I told him if he saved up the money he could buy it, and he saved up 250$ over the course of 3rd grade year.

He's in 6th now and he hasn't lost the IPod yet! Guess he showed me :)

So tonight DD10 went to the Natick AG store and purchased JLY #37 -she looks just like Nellie!! to go along with her Samantha doll!! He has strawberry blond hair and blueish green eyes - SHE IS SO EXCITED!!

I got my first AG doll at 10. I saved up for like EVER for a mini samantha. Im 25 and still have her, though she lost her tights and shoes.

I am so happy you let her get the doll! My DD10 got one and loves it, and yes, I am with all the other mothers here who are just happy their little girls are enjoying being a kid before moving on to other things.

I tend to be very controlling, so to reach a compromise, we agreed that when it is her money she can spend on what she wants, even if I disagree. BUT, when it is over $20, she has a 1 month waiting period to really think about it. If at the end of the month she still wants to buy it, she buys it.

I would buy her the doll and let her save her money for college.
That's just me!
I love those dolls!

DD who will be 11 next week wants Kit so bad. Now I wish I had ordered her for her birthday but it's only 5 days away. I might go at it this way- she will probably get some birthday money, so I might ask her to pay half. I have looked on eBay and the savings on Kit are not worth it.

We will also have to have Kit's overalls, because DD LOVES to wear overalls...it's her trademark of sorts.

She was thrilled to get a free typewriter- a Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe- so she can be like Kit. I found a new ribbon online, but she is finding that the old typewriter doesn't really work that well...

If she gets Kit, DD8 will want one too so they can play together. Oh boy. I need to decide if I really want to start this.

I would say absolutely yes! The fact that she's 10 and still wants a doll is awesome! Too many girls are already acting like mini-teenagers by that age. I'm sure it did (or will if she doesn't have it yet) take her quite a while to save up the $100, so she is learning about saving and being responsible with money. That, in my opinion, is the point of giving allowance anyway. You want to teach your children the responsible way to handle money. At age 10, saving up for a few months or half a year is 'long term'. The idea of putting money away for years and years at that age is, I think, a little abstract. Of course this is just my opinion, but I would let her get the doll, and have her start saving for a phone maybe when she's 12 or so, and start saving for the car when she gets to high school.

I'm so glad she got her doll!

My DD will be 8 right after Christmas and already has 5 dolls. When she was in kindergarten we went to an AmGirl fashion show and she just fell in love with them. That is also the year that Molly came out as a movie. We bought DD a JLY doll that year and my mom got her Molly. We added Julie the following year and then last year, I won the Kit & Ruthie dolls from B&N so that was a GREAT Santa gift.

They recently opened an AG store outside of Boston, so this spring I took her there and she saved half her money for the Chrissa doll that we got there.

While I know they are expensive, she love them (as do her friends) and plays with them a lot. I just ordered Felicity for her with a coupon code I found on the boards for Christmas this year.

You can also get great clothes for them at Michael's or AC Moore (and with a coupon they are very inexpensive) and now that Target has their line of Our Generation, they have cute clothes and accessories that fit AG as well.

One of the best things I like about AG is the books and movies. We have found sets of the books at local book fairs for $4 for the entire collection. She loves to read them and before she could read them on her own, DH would read to her. He is a big history buff so it was something they both enjoyed.

This year DD wants to spend some of her Disney money on a Disney dress for her AG doll since I've heard they will fit AG. She is very excited and just loves to dress, play school with and just play with her dolls.

I would definitely let her get the doll. How nice that your sweet 10 year old dd still is excited about playing with dolls. By the time she is 16 and ready for a car you'll wish she was still playing with dolls.

I hope your daughter enjoys her doll. My daughter is 3 and has 3 american girl dolls. Yes $100 is expensive for a doll (especially a 3 year old I know what you are thinking) but they last FOREVER! Seriously my sister in law has like 20 dolls that she had when she was a child and boxed away for her daughters. When she was done playing with them her mom would send them into American Girl for a clean up (only $16) and then put them away. Kelsey loves her dolls and I look forward to seeing her play with them for awhile.

So glad she got the doll!:goodvibes

Our daughter will be 6 on October 10th and she will be getting Chrissa and her starter set. She is going to flip!

She has Marisol, Nicki, Mia, a Bitty and the blonde Bitty twins. She absolutely loves them all and loves to play with them. She even recruits her older brothers to play with her, lol!

I hope she enjoys her new friend!

I just ordered Felicity for her with a coupon code I found on the boards for Christmas this year.

Can you share the code?

I did a little search and found that they were selling the DVDs for $5 each, but they are all sold out except Kit. Bummer.
