It's been a very, very long time since she's had anything more than a little cold and now she's really feeling miserable! Headache, fever, chills. Took her temp it was 100.6, gave her junior motrin. 40 minutes later she says she feels worse, I take her temp again, it's now 101.1. Granted, that's not a terribly high temp but it confuses me that it is 1/2 a degree higher instead of getting lower with the motrin. What do I do for her now?

Another sick Floridian girl:( . Sounds like my DD's illness at the beginning. May want to find and read my thread, some good advice from others. I am alternating Tylenol and Motrin every few hours. It has really kept the temp lower. Enough so that she will drink and can walk to the bathroom. Good luck and hope she feels better.

I read your other thread Bibidi...it sounds like your DD has a stomach thing too. We don't seem to have that (at least not yet).

I don't even have any tylenol in the house. DD & DS use the chewable junior motrin. I wonder if there is a chewable tylenol? DD can't swallow pills yet. We used to do the alternating thing when the kids were toddlers....they used to run high high fevers regularly but it's been a long time.

She does not have a stomach thing, Motrin is harsh on an empty stomach with a high fever. My kids throw up from high fevers, it is not a stomach bug at all. In fact she ate an icee and even had some food since the fever is down from the meds. There IS chewable Tylenol, that is whay we are using. It is Junior strength and my DD takes 2 ever 4 hours. I am giving her Motrin every 4 hours but started 2 hours after the Tylenol so she has something every 2 hours. Probably what you did when yours were small.
I answered you on my thread too! Take care!

Me again:p ! Does your DD have a sore throat, congestion and a little cough? I think DD had the headache and sore throat along with a little cough as her first symptoms plus a fever(though lowers than todays!). Then the fever has just continued to rise and spike. I think it is almost epidemic around here. SO many sick kids.:(
If you think it is the flu, call and get Tamiflu before 48 hours of symptoms! Though it may just be one of the other rampant viruses making the rounds.:(
Pixie Dust for you all.

Hi all,
DD continues with a fever all day today, the motrin isn't really touching it. Even with the Motrin she hovers around 101 and hasn't moved from the couch since 8:30am.

I called the doctor today to see if there were any words of wisdom from them on treatment. No wisdom from that corner. They said "motrin every 4 hours and lots of liquids, that's all she wrote for this thing". They did tell me I could give her 4 of the 100mg chewable motrins every 4 hours instead of the 3 that the package recommends. They were against alternating the tylenol/motrin because they said you should do that every 3 hours and they think the motrin is more effective and you can give it in 4 hours anyway. I explained the headache, sore throat, mild congestion, and occasional coughing. They said if the throat persists into tomorrow we should have it looked at because there is some strep going around but they doubted it. Sounds like the bug everybody's got. Nobody offered me this "tamiflu" thing.....what is that?

Oh, one last thing.....they told me this is a hanging on kind of thing. They've had lots of kids down for a week at a time with this. They said expect it to last for several days.

DD is upset because Tuesday is the "Florida Writes" test and she wants to do it with her class and not do a makeup. I will definitely keep her home tomorrow and we're keeping our fingers crossed for Tuesday!

My DD's fever broke during the night and I eased up on the meds.
Her ear got infected though, must go get the antibiotics now. It sounds like the identical thing my DD has-over 4 days of fever. I am afraid the fever may return. We have Florida Write's this week too, though hers is not the FCAT one.
Read down on this page about Tamiflu, but it only works if it IS the flu.

That was a GREAT link regarding info on the flu! Really informative! It sounds EXACTLY like what my DD has. I think tomorrow we will pop into the Dr's office to check on this throat thing.....she is in constant pain although when I look in her throat with a flashlight it doesn't even look red. In the past, when she has had strep I have been able to see redness and pus(sorry so graphic) but I don't see that this time.

She was dizzy a little while ago but that seems to have passed.

We finally got her temp down to normal for the first time in 24 hours with the increased motrin dose. She is still wiped out and on the couch though. No desire to do anything at all!

Bibbidoi-what grade is your daughter in? The FCAT FL Writes is just for 4th grade I believe. The regular FCAT is the first 2 weeks in March.

Well, I'll check back in later....it's reassuring to have someone to compare stories with.

Anybody else have kids down with this thing? How long did it last?

My DD was dizzy yesterday morning! Wow! Same bug. Seems to have wiped out quit a few. DD's strep was negative, though she has complained about the throat more than anything. Some Dr.'s will say it is a flu bug not in the shot we received, while others say it is a flu-like virus. I have a friend who tried Tamiflu and it did not help but it may have been a different virus(only works on real flu). Who knows! They can swab your DD's mouth at the Dr's and see if it is the real flu. If it is, other family members may want to take it to prevent the flu.
DD is in 2nd grade. She will have her regular Writes Upon Request(for the 9 weeks) this Tuesday(Narrative). They were to be on Wed, but with the 4th graders doing the FCAT Writes on Tuesday, they decided to do the whole school(1st-5th) on that day. She will have the Stanford test in March since FCAT does not begin until 3rd grade. She loves Writes and Testing, strange child! :p
I am kind of stuck on the computer as it is near her room and I can answer and help her quicker! I am ready for her to go to bed! SO glad the Motrin worked for your DD, it really is a wonder drug! Watch out for secondary infections.
Anyone else been through this and can offer us some light at the end of the tunnel?

Dr said yesterday that it wasn't strep, wasn't flu, "it's a virus".

Well, yesterday afternoon/evening we thought she was doing much better until she was up at 4am with 104 degree fever, headache(bad), and an awful, awful cough! That cough wouldn't quit! I gave her some robitussin cough syrup which seemed to quiet it down enough for her to sleep .

I'm going check back with the doctor today.....there must be more we can do. Their only recommendations were motrin and lots of liquids, she needs more than that!

Bibbidi....how's your little one doing?

I am so sorry Sonya, your DD seems to be following the exact course my DD did. Fever kept going up each day. My DD's was almost 103 Friday and almost 104 Sat by the time I was able to take it(and had used cool cloths on her for a bit). I think your DD is at that high point. That is the day I had to resort to the Motrin/Tylenol rotation-it was the only thing that worked. It did get the fever down and we got icees and fluids in her. She was even able to sit up and play in bed. I think she had soup/crackers that evening. The next day the secondary infection started. Be on the lookout for that. Yes, the cough is awful and has gotten worse in fact. My DD woke up with NO fever today :D ! Still coughing and says her throat is sore-may be from the infection in ears draining and the coughing. She wants to try school, I am hesitant, may send her just for her writes this morning. She only ran a low grade fever yesterday and the nurse felt that was from her infection. I would like to keep her home or in a bubble the rest of the winter!
The nurse did tell me to put cool washcloths behind her knees, under her arms and on her forehead when her fever was so high. She said a cool bath would work if she was able-my DD was not able to get up and do that though.
This horrid virus just has to run its course and 5-7 days seems to be what most are doing(the longer of that if infection sets in). Good luck to you and hope she breaks that fever by tonight.
