Anyone here ever been hospitalized for severe depression? And if so, what was the outcome? How many meds did they have to try before they found the "right" one?

A few months ago they had her taking something - I think it was Remeron - or something like that - and while it seemed to work quite well, she had such a substantial, rapid, weight gain they had to take her off of it after only a few weeks..

I feel so bad for her.. She was afraid to call and tell me - although I don't know why, because there was a time when I suffered from severe depression myself so I certainly understand where she's at.. She's very concerned about what her in-law's will think (they, along with her DH, don't understand depression and think it's just something you can "shake off") but I told her that should be the least of her worries.. This is about
her - not them - and if they don't understand (or if they don't WANT to understand) it's just too bad..

(((hugs)))

I dont have any advice, just wanted to offer my support :)

Poor thing.Hope she gets to feeling better.
My thoughts and prayers are with her.

No advice regarding meds, just wanted to let you know there are prayers and pd being sent from out west. Keep us posted on how she's doing. Depression can be so dibilitating.

I'm so glad she's being treated. There is so much untreated mental illness out there.

I was never hospitalized for it, but I've been diagnosed with it. The first time I had a major bout with it, the very first drug they put me on worked. The second time, I needed to try another one. Now I'm taking 2 anti-depressants and it's working well. I hope that finally, the world is getting educated on depression. It's not something that can be controlled by the sufferer, it's a chemical imbalance in the brain that can only be treated with medicine.

Please don't worry about what anyone thinks. What's important is that she gets the help she needs and gets on her way to recovery. If you need any other info or support, you can PM me anytime. Best of luck to you and DD.

One of my aunts has it for many years now. Hugs and prayers going out to you, C. Ann and your sister.

I have no experience with this but I wanted to send {{{HUGS}}} and prayers for your DD. I hope they find the right medication for her soon.

Oh, C.Ann...I'm so sorry you and your daughter are going through this. I'm not much of a one to throw hugs about on the DIS, but my heart truly goes out to you. Best wishes to you and your daughter.

"How many meds did they have to try before they found the "right" one?"

Please, please, please, don't jump right to medications!!! Do some research and avoid the SSRI's(ie. effexor, celexa, lexapro, and especially PAXIL!! The information regarding these medications that is coming out and is VERY SCARY! Anger, aggression, suicide attempts. Withdrawal can be devastating!
Find a good psychologist or therapist first!!

I sent you a PM.

C. Ann, I'm so glad your daughter is getting the help she needs. I've never been hospitalized with my depression but have had a couple severe bouts and am on meds. They can make a world of difference!

I'll keep her in my prayers.

I have no experience with this, but want to add I am so sorry. I know it must be so stressful to watch your daughter go through and not know how to help. I will say a prayer she gets the proper treatment and feels better soon. God Bless ^i^

Hi!

Sending prayers, and a few words of hope.

Fortunately with most depressions, (as with most conditions), there are likely to be good days which outnumber the bad days, and good seasons which outnumber the bad seasons. It is very likely that your daughter's condition will improve, especially with treatment.

Also, like with diabetes, there are many behaviors and skills that can be learned to ensure on-going periods of stability and a high quality of life. Sending prayers that your daughter will receive the help she needs and be responsive to treatment. And that she will be able to find the support she needs in the community after she finishes treatment, too. For one, Emotions Anonymous is a non-judgmental, confidential, and basically free support group that may have a chapter in your area. There may be other groups that can be helpful to her as well.

While I haven't been hospitalized myself, several of my friends have been. Now they are able to use their new skills and work with their doctors and medication, and do great year after year! :)

Good luck! :)

Sending you both best wishes and hugs. My brother is suffering with this awful disease. He had been in and out of the hospital. He does have a therapist. He is doing better now but it's been a struggle to find the right 'combo' of drugs for him. It is so hard to watch someone we love suffer with this. Basically there isn't much you can do but be there and offer support. It is a lonely battle. Be strong for your dd. She is lucky to have such a caring and understanding mom.

Thanks for all of the support.. I just had a LONG talk with my DD's husband and he just "doesn't get it".. He's frustrated, worried, but still can't seem to accept the fact that severe depression is NOT something you can just shake off..

Any suggestions on how to get through to him? The last thing I want is for him to go to the hospital and see my DD with the attitude that she shouldn't even be there.. :(
