DD will be 12 on Wednesday and she wants to get hightlights in her hair. She had brown hair.

I was thinking of the stuff you can buy in the store that washes out in a few shampoos in case she doesnt like it. Is it easy to do?

Or how expensive is it in the salon?

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi!

DD14 has light brown hair. Twice a year she gets blonde hilights put in professionally. (Not drastic) It's not cheap by any means, but it's OK for twice a year.

We've tried the store bought kind, and don't like it as much. (IMO)

Good luck! :)

I forgot to mention that you may want to try the kind that shampoos out the first time to see if she likes it. If she does, then consider professional hilights. :)

I've never used a store-brand. I don't trust myself! I was going into my Sophomore year in high school before I ever had them done professionally.

I have a "perfect" head of hair for the highlights that I have put in, according to my salon. My natural color has darkened slightly and the highlights bring it back to what it wa snatually before darkening. That said, it's still a lot of upkeep and maintenance, and mine isn't anything dramatic color-wise. Be sure she understands that- or you understand it from a financial stand point. It is a commitment so that they don't grow out and look awful if there's a big difference in the natural vs highlight color. And then, if she dyes it becuase it is growing out, you've got to deal with letting the dye grow out and the natural roots, etc. :faint:

You said she's got brown hair, right? Maybe putting in a fun red would be the way to go. Reds usually oxidize out quickly (at least I know they do on blondes, I figure this is true for everyone) and it would give her highlights, but it wouldn't be ones dramatically different from her natural color. When I'm saying red, I mean a redder version of her natural color... not red. More the first than the second, but there weren't very many pictures I could find.

Can you afford upkeep if you go to a salon? It averages about $500.00 a year.
If money is not an issue I would get them professionally done.

Although I have never used the highlights from the stores and they have alot of cool stuff out there these days.:thumbsup2

Nothing that washes out in a few shampoo's, will lighten. It's impossible - youre removing color from your hair - it wont come back ion a few washes.

That being said - if she only gets a few foils of blonde around her face, it wont run you that much. And if done correctly, wont require that much upkeep because it should just blend right in, as it grows out. *Highlights* were meant to look like a kids hair in the summer... you dont have to keep THAT color up in the winter. KWIM?

Check locally for a beauty school for fantastic prices on just a few foils up around her face and crown. You'll be pleasantly suprised with the results AND the price! :thumbsup2

And all students are always - watched - by teachers. You have nothing to worry about. :teeth:

I've told her about the "growing out" look. But I dont think she realizes that part of it.

And $500 per year is a lot for upkeep.

I think we should try to store stuff first.

Thanks everyone for your replies

Thank you CathrynRose, I posted as you were posting.

I will look into that too. I dont know if she just wants it around her face, that is much more doable IMO

No problem.

But I do NOT NOT NOT reccomend using store highlighting kits, either. Forgot to mention that.

Youll end up spending MORE at the salon trying to fix the "mess" and I guarantee, it'll end up a mess!

Just trust me, please. When I did hair, my mucho-bucks I made, was....corrective coloring. :teeth:
