We leave for WDW in 7 weeks. We have an appointment to get it removed this friday. Do you think that wil be enough time to heal for our upcoming trip? I was told there are 2 ways of removing it, acid (takes weeks) or in office surgery. We opted for cutting it out and praying it will heal in time. Does anyone have any experience with Plantar Warts? I'm stressing over this. Thanks!

I have had tons of plantars warts (including tens of them at a time). I have never had them removed and never have treated them except to pad them occasionally. With time they have all disappeared. My doctor has always told me that unless they are truly unbearable it is far better to just treat the symptoms rather than removing them (since they are pretty harmless). Good luck!

This may be totally off the subject but are plantar's warts anything like skin tabs????

My oldest ds had one and the dr said we should just try the pads with the acid on them at night. The other methods are painful he told us. Unless its unbearable why not try the pads with the saliclic acid first, its take a while but its not painful. The dr also told us the part of the wart you see is just a small part that it goes up into your foot about 1/2 inch and also the diameter inside is bigger than what it appears.

nkjzmom--no these are not like skin tab. Plantar warts or big warts you get on the bottom of your foot. they are larger than the other ones.

I guessing from your last post that they are on the bottom of the foot? Well yes I can tell you about that. I had one. Didn't know it was a wart and walked on it for a couple of months, very painful I might add. I went to doctor and had it cut out. I felt instant RELIEF. I had a hole in my foot for awhile but it didn't bother me since the wart was removed.
Here is the bummer about me not getting it done sooner. I permanently damaged my foot from walking on a sore foot. I have a bone spur on my ankle from that wart.

Good luck!!!

This is a big fairly painful plantars wart on the sole of DD foot. We leave for WDW in 7 weeks and I feel stressed to get it removed before we go. We don't have time to mess with acid. I think it should come out. Do you think it will heal in 7 weeks? If I leave it she may have trouble walking at WDW. I hope and pray taking it out before we leave is the right thing to do?? Please keep your comments coming on Plantas Warts. Thanks!

Muffy,

This is from McKesson Clinical Reference Systems: Pediatric Advisor 2001.2:

Cover the wart with a piece of adhesive tape or duct tape. Warts deprived of air and sun exposure sometimes die without the need for treatment with acids. Remove the tape once a week and wash the skin. After it has dried thoroughly, reapply the tape. The tape treatment may be needed for 8 weeks.

I know it says 8 weeks, but it might not hurt to try.

DS had one and it sure didn't take 7 weeks to heal! The podiatrist told us to use Occlusal-HP and soak his foot. I forget what we soaked it in...epsom salt? I think that's it. The salt draws it out. Occlusal-HP is available without prescription, but we had to ask the pharmacist for it because it's behind the counter. Good luck!

DS had a plantar wart which was bothering him. We tried the pads at first to remove it, but that didn't work. We then took him to the dermatologist and they froze it. The first procedure didn't really hurt. We had to take him in again and the Dr. cut away some of it and then froze it again. This time he screamed. It was excrutiating for him. He screamed all the way home. (He has a very low pain tolerance.) Two days later he was fine and played a soccer game.

You have to decide which would be better for your DD. I had plantar warts which spread all along an incision when I had to have foot surgery. I never had them removed because they said I would risk spreading more. They eventually went away.

We decided to have DS's removed because they can spread.

Getting it cut out is not that bad, kinda icky. It does look bad when it is finished. The hole is gross but going to WDW with a painful wart would really suck. Even if the hole is sore it would not be as bad as that wart on her foot. I say get it done asap so it can start healing.
And it did heal fine, it did take a long while but you would never know I did it.

I would get it done, the sooner the better. After she has it done you may want to let her spend a day with her foot up. I had one and I made an appointment for early in the am, had my stepfather drive me to it and then drive me in to work. I thought everything was fine. I was standing at the copier, and I was really wondering why my one foot was sweating so bad and the other wasn't at all. I sat at my desk and took my shoe off and my shoe was full of blood. I had to go back and have the incision sealed and then spend the day with my foot up. I wish I had just done that in the first place instead of going through all the other stuff, which really hurt. After that it healed up pretty well, I just had to pad it a lot for about a week afterwards. Just some things to consider.

My daughter had one removed with a laser, and she was fine after a couple of days. You have to be pretty careful about keeping it clean (it is a pretty big hole), but she should be fine in 7 weeks. Get it done as soon as possible though.

I am the master of experience with plantar's warts. UGH!

I have done the laser thing.... didn't get the root of it.

I have done the salicitic acid thing.... spent a long time doing this only to need surgery in the end... 3 times... the dang thing kept growing back.

The second surgery, the dr told me that he got everything, but to be sure, he'd cauterize the area. I can assure you that there is not enough vicodin in the world to deaden the pain of a burn wound. I was up all night crying to my DH because the pain was so intense.

The other two times, it was just cut out. I had to put cream on it to speed the healing and rinse it with betadine solution. It was big and gross, but I could walk with my full weight on it within a couple of days. I definitely could have done Disney in 7 weeks.

Before the third surgery, we attempted to freeze it off. Heck, if I could avoid the big hole in my foot, I'd try anything. The pain from that, because of the size of the wart was horrible. I was crying and screaming at the same time. I made the dr stop.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I went to Puerto Rico about 6-8 weeks after the last one was removed. I know that it doesn't compare to WDW walking, but I was frolicking in the surf and walking on the beach barefoot. I even went into the rainforest and swam under a waterfall... where I broke my toe... but that's another story.

Stop stressing. You'll be happy that everything was done within a week or two.

Wish you DD well for me.

I feel much better after reading all of these messages about Plantars Warts! Friday we go to the Poditrist and he will cut it out. I had to call more than a few Poditrist to find one that cuts them out rather than use acid first. We just don't have time to do the acid. Since it is bothering her I know it has to come out. I am just so glad I could get an appt. for this friday. Thank you again for all the kinds words, suggestions and support!

I had one cut out several times as a kid. It kept coming back. Mom got fed up and took me to a dermatologist. He put something painless on it(?) and it went away quickly, never to return. I sure don't remember needing 7 weeks for any of it though. Plantars warts ARE painful to walk on!

I have had plantars warts for years. Got rid of them after each child but with last DD they have been hanging on for 8 years! Tried every kind of treatment. Getting an actual incision and having them cut out has not been done at any of my treatments for years and years, probably 10 or more. I get them injected with something, then they scrape them out. It is less evasive and the foot is sore for maybe one day. Unfortunately they keep coming back. I've also tried treating them with a creme used for genital herpes, and that has worked ok in reducing the size. I would try the acid patches first. The foot injections are really, really painful. They don't bother me too much any more because I've gone through so many.

DD has had two of them so far, everytime we get the Dr scholls medicated pads and both times we got rid of it like that, the pads also have cushion around them she never felt any pain. It takes a few weeks to get rid of it but it's painless. The problem with warts is they are contagious.

I haven't had one since I was in HS (I am in my 30s now) but when I did, I actually used Compound W on it. Just put a little of that on it each night and after a couple of days, the dang thing just fell out of my foot, leaving a small, clean hole that filled in rather quickly. My mom still calls me weird for it...I didn't tell her what I was doing until after it fell out...I was scared she would take me to the Dr. to have it cut out.

I would rethink having it cut out. The reason you had so much trouble finding a podiatrist who would do that is it is not the standard treatment any more -- and for good reason. There are now much better, less invasive treatments. I had one cut out many years ago. I don't remember how long it took to heal, but I know I couldn't walk for a few days. After it mostly healed, it brought relief for awhile, then the itching and pain came back. I thought the wart had grown back. By then I was seeing dh and his father, a physician, asked me to please go to a dermatologist this time instead of a podiatrist (I had thought a podiatrist was an actual physician>). The dermatologist said my problem was scar tissue due to the surgery, which in her opinion was totally unnecessary and archaic. I don't remember exactly what kind of stuff she gave me (probably the acid oinment) but the problem was finally solved in a few weeks.
